  1. Can anyone recommend restaurants in San Luis Obispo or the Fresno / Clovis area? I'm headed there for Christmas, which is my first trip home and to the in-laws after my diagnosis...thankfully, family will be good about cooking for/with me, but I know they'll want to go out at least once in each location. Advice will be helpful. Thanks!
  2. I travel quite a lot for work, and since being gluten-free for the past 7 months, these trips have become a real issue for me. I need to figure something out to make the trips work better for me, because they aren't going to stop happening, and I'm really tired of being a starved mess by the time I get home. Dinner is usually hotel room service...too...
  3. My parents live in San Luis Obispo (just north and slightly inland). There is a Pizza Fusion, which has gluten free pizza, there on Higuera Street. Unfortunately, I haven't been home since my diagnosis, so otherwise I don't know about gluten free options. Enjoy your trip - Pismo and the surrounding areas are gorgeous!
  4. Great, thanks. Just needed a reality check - I figured if I'd never heard it he had to be wrong, but he really did believe that I needed to worry about that.
  5. Because the chicken might have been free range and might have eaten wheat. I am relatively new to this, and have never heard or seen anything about worrying what my meat ate when it was alive. But at the same time, the guy had a completely straight face when he said this. This is as crazy as it sounds, right?
  6. I just went to San Antonio a few weeks ago. We had a pretty good experience. For anyone going in the near future, I can whole-heartedly recommend both Paloma Blanca and Little Aussie Bakery. We also had success with the Chili's in the mall off the Riverwalk (I used the online gluten-free menu via blackberry, and had no issues). I would warn you that most...
  7. I've been feeling off, and the only new ingredient that I'm not 100% sure about is a can of San Marcos Chipotle Peppers in Adobo Sauce. Does any know if these are gluten free? The ingredients sure looked like they should be ok - nothing that suggested I should be worried. Ingredients are: Chipotle Peppers, Tomato Puree, Vinegar, Onions, Sunflower...
  8. My grandparents want to take my husband and I out to Green Pastures for their Sunday brunch buffet when we are in town. This is one of their favorite places (lots of family history there), and I'd really like to not rock the boat by asking to go somewhere else. Plus, the food is awesome - or at least it was last time I was there pre-diagnosis. Does...
  9. This definitely isn't anything my doctors told me. I noticed after a month or so of being gluten free that I drank a lot less water when I wasn't glutened...mainly because I was going through only one, and sometimes less than one, pitcher (64 oz) of water during a day at work, instead of 2, sometimes 3 as I had been before. Yeah, I know I drink way more...
  10. Forgot I had food restrictions and tossed the new Reese's Dark in my grocery cart - even got so far as to open them before I remembered I have to check first (grrr). And now I can't find anything definitive online. Does anyone know if the new dark Reese's chocolate PB cups are gluten free?
  11. Larabars, Bumble Bars, thinkGreen, PranaBars and Kind bars are gluten free (some of these are also dairy free, but check carefully). Try your local Whole Foods store. Personally, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Kind bars - they actually have whole nuts and large chunks of dried fruit in them - and they are crunchy! I'm not a fan of those weird gummy non-crunchy...
  12. Ok, this is weird, but I had the same thing come up on my blood-based allergy test. According to that test, I am severely allergic to eggs, especially egg yolk. The test also said I was allergic to gluten. I got further testing, and I am not a celiac sufferer, but an elimination diet on gluten has proven that I am at minimum gluten allergic or intolerant...
  13. Since I am only gluten-intolerant, I thought I'd give gluten free oats a shot (I think that the one-year rule doesn't apply to me since a biopsy showed no damage, right?). Can anyone recommend a safe, affordable brand I could purchase online? Fall would be very strange without oatmeal!
  14. I had foot pain when I first got out of bed for years before being diagnosed. It was so bad walking down my four steps from my bedroom were excruciating! When I did my gluten challenge, it came back with a vengeance. Now I only get it when I am inadvertently glutened. For me it seems to dissapate with a lot water - I seem to need ridiculous amounts of...
  15. A mix-up from my grocery delivery ended in me having baby back pork ribs from Carson's in my freezer. They are covered in the Carson's BBQ sauce, which lists ingredients including "spices" and "natural flavorings." Does anyone happen to know if the Carson's sauce is gluten free? I'm going to contact the company, but thought someone might know already...
  16. My husband and I will be traveling to San Antonio in September, and plan to take a short side-trip to Austin and potentially Hill Country as well. Can anyone recommend places to go for tasty gluten free food? I don't necessarily need there to be a dedicated menu, just places where the waiter / waitress won't look at me like I'm crazy when I tell him / her...
  17. I'd recommend the following: Marcello / Father and Sons - excellent pizza, but apparently nothing else on the menu is gluten free. If ordering, confirm what toppings are gluten-free - they claim everything but 2 or 3 things (I can't recall what they are). Naha - California / modern American cuisine. Call ahead and let them know you're coming. When...
  18. Hello all - Just a quick head's up - I don't post often but I rely on this site a great deal for information on gluten free products. I was shopping today via the Peapod (grocery delivery service in major cities, including Chicago) website, with their "gluten-free" filter turned on. I haven't noticed this before, but at least for right now it is MAJORLY...
  19. Long story, shortening as much as possible. My normal (osteopathic) doctor ran an allergy test in late February that came back (in late March) positive for various allergies, including gluten. My doctor told me to "take it with a grain of salt" and sent me away. He discouraged testing for Celiacs. I left a week and a half later for a month long...
