ARCHIVED Your Tips For Easy Weight Loss?
Erin Elberson replied to Lynayah's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
A quick couple things: Food combining is not magic and means nothing if you are not in a caloric deficit. You have to be in a caloric deficit to lose fat (using more calories than you take in) that is the most important component. Heart rate is a great tool. However, there is no magic "fat burning zone." That is a myth that just won't die... -
ARCHIVED Why The Weight Gain?
Erin Elberson replied to NOLA-girl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Awesome stuff! I think not realizing how much we are eating is very, very common-good on your for recognizing that and making a change! And the running and feeling better-goes without saying that this is really good stuff! Keep up the great work! -

Hey Leanne! That's great-cutting out sweets, lessening bread intake and eating naturally gluten free whole foods is definitely a good way to go. Congratulations on your loss!! (sounds backwards-but true right ? ) -

Lyn, I am so glad that I've been able to help in some small way. Your smoothie sounds great-just be careful with the pineapple as it can be calorically dense, and be sure to count that and the aaple in your daily totals. And honestly, you may find it more satisfying if you chew it rather than drink it. And it will take longer to eat!! You could... -

Magpie-those are all great points Lyn-I do think the gliadin issue is making it tough for you. The gut does affect hormone levels, as do fat stores. The hormone leptin, which is what helps you feel satisfied, can be an issue in some people. I am trying to find some research that I can access (for free-most of them you have to pay for the full text... -

You have a great outlook! Weighing is a great tool and I prefer it over measuring completely-just more accurate. And it does give you a good sense of portion, so when the day comes that you are at a weight you would like to maintain, it will be easier to "eyeball" if you like. But while you are actively losing, weighing and a food journal is the way to... -
ARCHIVED Women, Please Help.
Erin Elberson replied to Liveenjoylife's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I do not think it could be related to celiac-although I am sure we will continue to learn about the ramifications of the disease. I believe they are still researching any effects on hormone levels. Either way I would recommend seeing your gynecologist so they could do an exam and perhaps test hormone levels. I hope you feel better soon. -

Sounds like you are on the right track! Exercise and general activity are key, as you know. I am curious though-how do you know you are getting 1500 calories? Are you weighing everything you eat? I ask because it is very common for measuring (with cups and spoons) to be inaccurate, and you may be getting several hundred calories more than you think... -
ARCHIVED Wondering About Weight Issues
Erin Elberson replied to Kathleen Smith's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
You have already been given some great feedback, and it sounds like you are on the right track. You are absolutely right to take one day, one issue at a time, and also me gentle with yourself and be patient. Fat loss is a process. I agree with Lyn 100%-I think we tend to eat more sweets/processed stuff that's labeled "gluten free" because we know it will... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Protein Shake Meal Replacement
Erin Elberson replied to Jeremiah's topic in Sports and Fitness
I believe Allmax is a brand available in Canada, and they are gluten free (Check individual flavors though to be sure-I am dying to try the peanut butter chocolate whey isolate!) I also believe that True Protein ships to Canada. I use Beverly International, chocolate and vanilla flavors are gluten free, not Cookies N Creme. Unfortunately, PVL Whey... -
ARCHIVED French Quarter Restaurant In Hollywood, Fl
Erin Elberson replied to Erin Elberson's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I just found out that normally this restaurant is a Vegas-style buffet. Because we were there for a special event they made accommodations, but I don't know how feasible that would normally be, so be aware -
ARCHIVED French Quarter Restaurant In Hollywood, Fl
Erin Elberson posted a topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Attended a event at this facility last night, an awards dinner for my fiance's fire department. Myself and another lieutenant's wife were celiac. The coordinator of event alerted them ahead of time, but had not received a concrete response of what would be available, so I did the "chicken in a ziploc in my purse" just in case. I was pleasantly surprised... -
ARCHIVED How Much Protein Do We Need?
Erin Elberson replied to shirleyujest's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Depends on your activity level and goals. For a physically active individual, weight trains and does cardio, generally 1 to 1.25 g/lb is accepted as optimal (not minimal.) Less active people can get away with less. .5 g/lb approx as previously mentioned. -
ARCHIVED Any Opinions On L-carnatine And L-carnosine?

For what specifically? Generally the research has been unfavorable as far as benefits for body comp. At this point save your money. -
ARCHIVED Weight Gain Since gluten-free/some Good Advice Needed
Erin Elberson replied to penny-s's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
The bottom line is calories in vs calories out. You say you are fairly inactive, so chances are your calorie needs are fairly low. A fried potato here, a 3 musketeers there, shrimp scampi (which is loaded in butter), they add up. Research has shown that people underestimate their food intake by 50%. More than likely it's not a metabolism issue, although... -
ARCHIVED Advice On Gluten Free And Safe Suplements Needed
Erin Elberson replied to hex's topic in Sports and Fitness
Which specific supplements are you interested in? As far as protein powders, as I mentioned in another thread I have never had any issues with Beverly International or American Whey brands. Bars-Oatmega 3 are the only ones that seem to have a decent ingredient and nutritional profile. -
To your original question, do whatever is your primary focus first. If strength training/building is your primary goal, lift first. If endurance training is your primary goal, do your cardio first. And agreed with previous posts-if training with weights, you may want to consider a full body 3 day a week plan, a 4 day upper lower or push/pull, or a bodypart...

Protein is almost never a bad thing, with the exception of kidney disease. Barring that, go for it. I am an amateur figure competitor and have used many supplements. Definitely agree that Vit D levels are crucial. NOW brand is generally safe, well labeled and meets good manufacturing practices. I use their Digestive Enzymes and probiotics, Alpha Lipoic...
