  1. This is a recipe for wholegrain brown rice waffles at Sue Gregg's site. They are really good, and inexpensive. Everybody likes them here except my husband who doesn't like waffles anyway. Open Original Shared Link Be sure to blend for about 5 minutes before adding the baking powder, though. Otherwise they'll crumble and stick to the waffle iron...
  2. My 8 yo daughter had a blood test for celiacs two months ago (but no biopsy), then we went gluten free and she felt better, though she has ups and downs. Well, she was positive on the anti-gliadin, but not the antiendomysial blood test, and the doctor said she probably had celiacs. As I've done more research, I've found that the anti-endomysial blood test...
  3. Can't you be gluten intolerant and NOT have celiac disease? I thought I read that somewhere.
  4. Well, she never mentioned having this before going gluten-free. Now it seems like it's been happening more frequently. I'll have to pay better attention to when it happens and if it is food related.
  5. Well, 8yo dd has been eating a little bit better the last few days. I've been trying to give her more bland foods and I wonder if she may have been getting some contamination. But the last three days or so she's told me that she gets a weird feeling that starts in her feet and moves quickly up through her whole body. She says it feels like ice going...
  6. What brand is the advent calendar? I have one from Sherwood brands. I didn't see anything obvious on the ingredient list, but it did have flavors I think. I looked on the website, but no phone number and the email submission form didn't work (good grief!) I hadn't thought about this. Anyway, she's been sharing with two brothers, so she only gets one...
  7. I bought some Aplets and Cotlets at Costco and was wondering if my gluten-free daughter could eat them. They are SO good. I emaield the company and this is their response: Gluten is a protein found in some cereal grains. Most often wheat gluten is the source of certain people's digestive problems. Barley, oats, spelt, kamut, triticale and other lesser...
  8. I did search before posting but nothing came up. But now I just searched again, and this thread didn't even come up. So either the site isn't working properly or I'm searching incorrectly. Sorry if the topic has already been discussed! Still interesting, though so if you want to post your blood type, do!
  9. I was reading about eating right for your blood type kind of just for fun (I don't know that I believe it, but my mother does), and I was curious to know if certain blood types had more celiacs or if it's just spread out evenly over the different blood types. Of course this is a very unscientific poll, but an interesting thought. I don't know what my daughter...
  10. Maybe it is just her body adjusting to the gluten-free diet. I know the poor thing is really messed up with all these things going on. She's been craving juice like crazy. She won't eat too many of the gluten-free things, and much what she does eat isn't too nutritious (like white tapioca bread). But of course this isn't too much of a change over before...
  11. I did search for this topic on the boards, and I know it's been discussed, but usually about a toddler/preschooler. I think this may be different in that it's not a will struggle. My 8 yo daughter has been gluten-free for about 3 weeks now. The first two weeks, she still had her regular stomachaches, diarrhea, headaches. Her hives went away, and her...
  12. I'm sorry you have to be going through this with your sweet baby! There IS a higher risk of Celiac disease in people with Down syndrome. I would also not trust the allergy test. We had the allergy scratch tests don on my daughter, but nothing showed up even though we KNEW she was lactose intolerant and had other food intolerances as well. If I were...
  13. My 8 yo daughter is the one that likely has celiac. (positive AGa test, feeling better after almost 2 weeks on gluten-free diet.) My mother- is swedish My dad - english ancestry My husband's mother - english (I think) My husband's father - danish On my side, my mother's mother died of lung cancer (chain smoker). My brother and sister...
  14. I tried making the Toll House cookies tonight, but they were quite crumbly and I'm sure they'll turn hard. I did use sweet rice flour instead of glutenous asian flour because I thought I read somewhere that those were the same things. Maybe they are not. I couldn't find the glutenous rice flour anywhere, though. Also, when making gluten-free cookies...
  15. I'm really sorry your relatives just don't understand and don't want to listen! That's gotta be so hard. So maybe in your Christmas letter to your relatives you can include a celiac article from a "reliable" source (since YOU obviously aren't one - according to them anyway). Here's one: Open Original Shared Link Here's a list of articles: Open...

    ARCHIVED Homeopathic Remedy

celiac3270, I was reading your homeopathic remedies topic because the dr. I took my daughter too recommended a homeopathic remedy for her to help stop the diarrhea. I forgot what it's called though. I have no idea if it's doing any good, but then again, I have a hard time getting her to take it three times a day (mainly because I forget!) After 2 weeks...
  17. I think some enterprising company needs to start a contaminant-free oat growing farm & manufacturing plant. Can't they rotate the crops with other gluten-free grains? Obviously, I have no idea, but I'm sure there'd be a market for gluten-free oats!
  18. Great cold & hot cereal ideas, thanks! I think it'd be difficult to eat just plain hot any kind of cereal without some kind of mix in. Some mix ins we've done (with oatmeal anyway) are cinnamon apple - mix in fresh chopped apples when the water is boiling, then add cinnamon (or apple pie spice) and other sweetener Maple cinnamon - maple syrup...
  19. Which cold cereals are gluten-free? I saw that Rice Chex & Corn chex both have barley malt flavoring, as does Crispix. I also haven't found any gluten-free cornflakes yet, either. I know that Western Family Rice Krispies are gluten-free, but what about other cereals? Danna Korn mentions that there is a gluten-free chex-like cereal, but she doesn...
  20. Thanks for the great online list and for the advice not to buy one!
  21. Ok, I'm excited to try this, but... can't find the glutinous rice flour! I got the fine rice flour for just 59 cents a lb here. The lady in the store had no idea what I was talking about - language barrier I think! Can I substitute sweet rice flour from Bob's red mill for the glutinous rice flour? Isn't that sort of the same thing? I may go ahead...
  22. Lynn, I can sure feel for you! I have an 8-1/2 yo daughter w/numerous health issues too. It's so hard because you feel like there's not much you can do for her when she doesn't feel good! My daughter has lactose and Gluten intolerances. After being gluten-free for about 10 days now, I've seen a marked improvement in her. I cannot believe how much energy...
  23. Has anyone purchased a grain mill to reduce the cost of these specialty flours used in gluten-free baking? If so, is it worth it (if you do a lot of baking?) What do you like / not like about your brand of grain mill? The WhisperMill looks really nice. If you also wanted to use one for wheat and other gluten flours for the rest of the family, would...
  24. I've seen that the CSA has a shopping list/guide for $20 (last updated 2003), and there's one at www.clanthompson.com for about $6. I saw a 2004 one on ebay for $4.95. Are these guides worth it? Are there other ones? Which one is the best? Or do you all just do your own research? Thanks!
  25. So did we decide that all gluten-containing ingredients would be listed on the ham packages too? I got a little confused after that long discussion! I know Jennie-O turkey ham (that we usually eat) has modified food starch (or some other gluten containing ingredient in it) so that's a no-go.
