ARCHIVED Did The Lab Run The Right Test?
Squidge replied to Coleslawcat's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The fact is, according to HIPPAA, somebody has to give you the results. Also, they may not be able to share them over the phone. They have to be able to cover there buts, and might not share them if you can't verify your identity. -
ARCHIVED Please Advise!
Squidge replied to isitreally's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have to agree. And as far as your doctor calling it a severe allergy, NEVER assume that it is okay to have even a little bit of something you are severely allergic to. Allergies can and do kill often enough. Furthermore, severe allergies can get worse with every exposure. Also, a severe gluten allergy can cause all the symptoms you listed, including... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free In San Fran
Squidge replied to Squidge's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Thank you so much. I'll keep those in mind. The other people going will probably love the burger place. Especially Dr. Mencer. When we were in Salt Lake City last year, he insisted on going to get a Bison burger, even though it was $20 for the burger without sides, if I recall correctly. I checked and Colibri is fairly close to the area of San Francisco... -
ARCHIVED Could This Be Gluten Intolerance/celiac's
Squidge replied to lkat's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It can take days for stuff to pass. Especially problematic stuff. Furthermore, seeing is believing in this case. If it's just coming out now, it took that long to make it out. Also, You've only been gluten free for 5 days. You will still have problems for a bit while the damage heals. If it is Celiac's or gluten intolerance, that is. -
ARCHIVED Did The Lab Run The Right Test?
Squidge replied to Coleslawcat's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Two things. If asked, the lab must provide you with what tests were done and exactly what the results were. Second, oftentimes the blood tests come back negative even if somebody does have Celiac's. Get the actual test results and what tests were done and ask your gastroenterologist. He will know if the right tests were done. He should also know if it... -
I'm going to an American Chemical Society meeting in San Francisco this spring. I need to find places I can eat gluten free hopping through airports and while actually in San Fran. My poor travel companions will be so tired of Chili's if I don't. Also, I'm going to find it a bit awkward forcing 6 other people to eat at a certain place because I have Celiac...

Restaurants are required by law to provide you with an ingredient list if requested. They can't say no in the actual store. Go to starbucks and ask for an ingredient list for the latte you want.

ARCHIVED Guide To Gluten Free Restaurants?
Squidge replied to Coleslawcat's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
There is a book out there. My sister's roommate has it. My sister's been trying to figure out the title, but hasn't been able to get in contact with that particular roommate when it's been on her mind. I'll get on her case about that and see what I can find out. -
You really should be nicer about that. Soy sauce isn't something you think of as having wheat. After all, the climate in Thailand isn't conducive to growing wheat.

There are Catholic approved gluten FREE host wafers, supposedly. I'm sorry, I get really upset about situations such as this. Jesus never once commanded that the bread be made using wheat, rye, or barley. He also never commanded us to make ourselves sick trying to properly worship him. You do also need to have a serious talk with your priest about cross...

ARCHIVED Symptoms- Diagnose Me!
Squidge replied to Robyn1216's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Early on the endoscope might show nothing. Celiac's can be lurking all your life and then finally hit and start doing damage. You should talk to your doctor, and if he/she doesn't want to send for more tests, try the diet. -
ARCHIVED Mixed Alcoholic Drinks
Squidge replied to barbie-doll's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Actually distilled is a purification process, having nothing to do with gluten. However, it is used on hard liquors to remove impurities. However, if the liquor in question was fermented from wheat, rye, or barley, do not drink it whether or not it is distilled. -
Salad is very delicious. Okay, I don't think so, but I hate lettuce. Just avoid the croutons and check the ingredients on the dressing and you should be fine. Rice noodles or just rice for starch. Also, my sister makes a wonderful vegetarian chili that is completely gluten free. Eat peanuts and beans to keep getting protein. Also, learn to bake your...

ARCHIVED Feelin Lonely In Glutenland
Squidge replied to mandy-c's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Cheetos are gluten free, but they're a dairy problem. Nachos and salsa. Buy the ones that are labeled 100% corn, though. Quakes, those mini rice cakes Quaker makes are pretty good. They sell gluten free cookies and pretzels. Make Chex Muddy Buddies. Swedish fish. Most potato chips are okay. Just don't buy baked chips and don't get barbecue. Lays... -
ARCHIVED Situational Illness
Squidge replied to ErraticBinxie's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Actual research has shown that as low as 0.02 ppm of gluten can cause intestinal damage and most Celiac's patients should stick to less than 2 ppm of gluten to be safe. And even if the threshold really was 10 ppm, flour has 80,000 ppm. Bread factory, still a problem. -
ARCHIVED Situational Illness
Squidge replied to ErraticBinxie's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Considering how little gluten it can take to make you sick, it's quite likely. Get a dorm transfer! Gluten can be ingested by inhaling flour. When you do that particles of flour, and thus of gluten, get stuck in you mouth. The next time you eat, you ingest those particles. A bread factory could quite possibly get gluten in the air nearby. Get the transfer... -
Stop smoking marijuana. It could make you feel better but really make things worse, and it can be expensive. Also, don't actually shop in the gluten free aisle. They jack the prices up there. Rice Chex are gluten free. So are Corn Chex and most of the flavored Chex. Wal Mart puts wheat allergy warnings on their store brand food products. Cook mostly...

Tell them it's like a very sensitive allergy. They wouldn't expect someone allergic to peanuts to eat even regular M&Ms because of cross-contamination. Also, make them do research on it. I'm lucky, all my friends are chemists and chemists really understand cross-contamination.

ARCHIVED Feeling Defeated & Useless
Squidge replied to Sarenha's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
In some cases of Celiac's and gluten intolerance, gluten can cause neurological issues as well. This can cause things such as depression and moodiness. The digestive symptoms certainly don't help either. I get depression from it too. Between the depression and the digestive problems my parents thought I had an eating disorder and was purging. Now they... -
ARCHIVED Ten Months Gluten Free And Still Having Slight Digestive Issues Regularly
Squidge replied to tfrankenberger's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
If that's the case try mainly rice products. Alternate grains often acquire trace amounts of gluten from cross-contamination. Grains are usually processed close to where they're grown, and rice isn't grown anywhere near wheat. Wheat doesn't like quite as much wet as rice does. Also, General Mills, which includes Betty Crocker, has a rather novel, pretty... -
ARCHIVED Ten Months Gluten Free And Still Having Slight Digestive Issues Regularly
Squidge replied to tfrankenberger's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Who told you that? It could take months depending on how much damage there already was. Your digestive tract can take more than ten days to heal. Furhtermore, there are other sensitivities that could be causing problems. Try eliminating milk, soy, and things that can irritate a healthy digestive tract, like corn, especially popcorn, and nuts. Start a... -
ARCHIVED Oats And Skincare
Squidge replied to tan celiac girl's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Gluten cannot normally be absorbed through the skin. However, you cannot use those products on your FACE. It's too close to the lips; you could actually ingest some of it. Don't use them on your hands either. You touch everything, including your face and lips more often than you think. Also, if you are going to school, and doing stuff in the laboratory... -
Check the international foods section. There are a lot of Thai and Indian prepackaged foods that you can get that are gluten-free. Also, Minute brand minute rice comes in microwaveable bowls perfectly sized for 1 meal. If you've been officially diagnosed you can also try contacting your school's food service and see what they can do. Some schools, such...

ARCHIVED Happy New Year From Wheatland, Wyoming!
Squidge replied to AndrewNYC's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Life is full of it's little ironies, isn't it? -
Is anybody from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area? I have no idea where to get decent gluten-free food out except at Chili's and Ho Yi Chinese Restaurant, and I can get Ho Yi only because Sue will cook special for her customers with special needs if they ask her. I only know one person with Celiac's and she's from Virginia. She only goes to college in PA...
