  1. When I was diagnosed with celiac disease 2 years ago I was told I was "lucky" because I can feel the effects of gluten when I ingest it. My dietician told me there are many celiacs who have no symptoms from gluten and that can be even more dangerous because it still damages the body. What are your thoughts on this? How come some with Celiac Disease...
  2. But aren't trace amounts enough to make some of us sick? Personally, I know everytime I eat Dry Onion Soup Mix I get sick. It does not surprise me at all that there is barley in it.
  3. I use it daily without a problem.
  4. I'm not sure about the eggnog, but I want to encourage you on your newest journey of being gluten free. It is a challenge and may take some time to get used to, but it is worth it. You have come to a good place here at celiac.com. The people here have been a tremendous source of info and encouragement to me. Sometimes it's nice to know you are not the...
  5. Thanks. I'll check it out.
  6. Thank you to everybody who encouraged me to get the gluten out of my house. My friend came over 2 weeks ago and took all my gluten away. We also got rid of all the containers, pans, spoons, and cutting boards that possibly had gluten hiding in them. She wiped down all my cupboard shelves and cleaned out my drawers. Then I washed all the hot pads and oven...
  7. What are quinoa flakes? We are now a gluten free house and my husband misses oatmeal tremendously. (I react very strongly to even the gluten free oats.) Maybe I'll try to find quinoa flakes for him...and me! Are they any good?
  8. That is just crazy! Cross contamination is a HUGE issue for those with celiac disease. Just ask any one here!
  9. You have come to the right place! It helps so much to talk this stuff out with others who live with it every day. Do you still have gluten in your house? Cross contamination is a tricky, serious issue. Think about toasters, hard to clean corners in cake pans, shared peanut butter or butter with gluten traces, etc. Also when going to restaurants...
  10. Don't forget to wash all your measuring cups/spoons before starting. It's also a good idea to use fresh hand towels and dishrags. You can never be too careful! It is nice that you are willing to do all this research to bake for your friend.
  11. What about Cocoa Pebbles? I've had those and done just fine with them. I have also made some good "Cocoa Pebbles Bars" instead of Rice Crispie Bars. They are very good and great crowd pleasers at social gatherings. Just remember to set a few aside for yourself first to avoid cross contamination!
  12. Just curious if you always have the same symptoms when you consume gluten or if they vary? My symptoms seem to vary. I am trying to discern whether I am reacting only to the obvious gluten or if I have other food issues too. Please share your experiences with me!
  13. Thanks for all the great ideas! I am excited to give my baby good food and not be so paranoid about him getting full of gluten and then loving me up as only sweet babies can. I think even my older kids will enjoy the food that was mentioned. I'll pass these ideas on to my brother for him to give my gluten-free nephew.
  14. In making my house gluten free I have to figure out some gluten-free finger foods for my 13 month old. Cheerios, graham crackers, and Goldfish crackers are no longer options. Can anybody give me ideas of tasty snacks for a toddler on the go?
  15. Thank you everybody for your encouragement. I still feel overwhelmed, but my hope has been renewed. It is nice to know I'm not alone in this.
  16. I have had my 5 older kids tested...one was tested twice, and they were all negative. I am still surprised none of my children have celiac disease. I realize it can show up at anytime, so it would be good for them to not consume as much gluten. Thanks for the encouragement.
  17. I do feel so much better and am starting to think a little cc won't really matter. My friends point out to me how sick and how horribly thin I was when I was finally diagnosed. It's easy to forget how terrible that was when you finally feel good. Sometimes I think I should consume some gluten so I will get really sick and not want to be lazy anymore. Stupid...
  18. I guess I never thought of it that way. Thanks for pointing that out to me.
  19. I can totally relate with you. I think I'll start "hanging out" here more often. Thanks for your support!
  20. I've been at this for almost 2 years already. Will I ever get used to this lifestyle? My husband and 2 oldest kids are supportive of going gluten-free at home, my middle 2 keep telling me how unfair it would be if they can't eat gluten at home. How do you deal with that? Thanks for the encouragement. It is nice to know I'm not the only one living...
  21. Hey Everyone... I am feeling very frustrated with Celiac Disease and cross contamination these days. My husband is encouraging me to make the house gluten free so we don't always have to be so careful and so I can better avoid cross contamination. I have no desire to eat gluten. What is hard for me is with 6 kids and a husband that can have gluten, why...
  22. This may be stupid, but is it possible to get sick from breathing in the steam from boiling gluten? Last night I got sick and I am sure I did not consume any gluten. My kids were making Kraft Macaroni and Cheese and I was near the stove as the noodles were cooking. Could that have made me sick? Another time I was at a friend's house and as they...
  23. For about 2 years I have just been receiving the Blood of Christ when it is offered. This weekend I decided to try the special "gluten-free" host made by the Benedictine Sisters. I talked to the priest before Mass. He put the host in a pix (special container) on the altar and at communion time he offered me the pix. I opened it and took the Body of...
  24. I have tried the Bell & Evans gluten-free chicken tenders twice. Both times I started feeling sick right away. Reading the ingredients closely the second time I read it is processed in the same facility as wheat ingredients. Has anyone else had a problem with this? They sure do taste good, but I am not willing to try them again.
  25. Cross Contamination (CC) can make being gluten free tricky. Here are some things I've learned: Get your own peanut butter jar, jelly, butter, and toaster. Get your own cooking utensils and serving spoons.(Mine are red so we can tell easily they are gluten free). I keep my lunchmeat and cheese in well marked bags away from the family supply. I no longer...
