ARCHIVED An Article About Buying Gf Food Online
sfortney replied to celiac3270's topic in Publications & Publicity
You're right, not all Kroger stores have a gluten free section. Unfortunately, I live in one of the areas that does not. Once every other week I take a trip to a larger city that does and also visit a health food store there. It's a 1 1/2 hour trip, one way. But it is nice to know it's there. I usually just end up ordering my things online. The selection... -
ARCHIVED Anxiety Medication
sfortney replied to rmmadden's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was prescribed Lexapro back in September, before they actually figured out what was going on with my body. I was extremely anxious and had a lot of attention and concentration issues. It doesn't seem to make me sleepy and it did help with the other problems. Now that I have been gluten-free for 3 months I can tell a big difference in my anxiety level... -
ARCHIVED Hamburger Buns And White Bread
sfortney replied to LLH's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Whole Foods Market does make some really delicious gluten-free baked goods. I got some biscuits at one in NJ last week. They were wonderful! As far as hamburger buns go, I haven't really had a lot of experience with those, I usually just wrap my burger in Romaine or Green leaf lettuce, which is actually a really good way to eat them. I did buy some... -
ARCHIVED Mourning Corn Pops?
sfortney replied to Ruth's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We really like the Envirokidz cereals too. Bob's Red Mill makes a very good hot cereal called "Mighty Tasty gluten-free Hot Cereal". I like it with a little unsweetened applesauce and molasses or honey added. There is another one that is pretty good called "Rice and Shine". I think it's from Arrowhead Mills. -
ARCHIVED Burger King, Macdonalds, Wendys, Arbys
sfortney replied to deener's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I found some really good onion rolls at the Whole Foods Market (can't remember the brand right off hand) that are perfect for a hamburger bun or sandwich, but they are much better if they are warmed a little bit first in the microwave. I usually just eat my hamburger as it comes (but without bun) and wrap it in lettuce leaves. It's actually really good... -
ARCHIVED Burger King, Macdonalds, Wendys, Arbys
sfortney replied to deener's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Every Burger King I have been to does fry onion rings and french fries separately, but they all use the same scoop for both when they fill the bags. I questioned this and was told that they would use a separate scoop if I requested it. How much help is that! The contamination has already occured when they scooped previous fries. No brainer. I stopped... -
I have had a lot of success with our local Chinese places. Before going gluten free I almost always ate lo mein, but I have found that I can order chicken or shrimp fried rice without soy sauce or chow mei fun (rice noodles) (shrimp or chicken) without soy sauce and add wheat free tamiri to it after I get it and it is wonderful! Be warned, however...

ARCHIVED Gf In China (?)
sfortney replied to gooldenwending's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Sinophile, Hopefully I will be travelling to China within the next year, can you offer any suggestions for me as far as eating out gluten free? -
I will be going through the same situation sometime within the very near future. A friend of mine adopted a son from Russia last year. They had no trouble taking in boxes of sealed crackers, gum, and peanut butter. China may be different though. I am trying to get some information on the subject will post if I hear anything though. We also will...

Does anyone have any advice for travelling in Asia, particularly China?
-
Thank you, this information has been so helpful. My husband and I will be travelling to China sometime in the next year and a half to adopt and I have been very worried about spending 2 weeks there and staying well.

ARCHIVED Interesting Observation
sfortney replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Potassium is also a factor with Charlie Horses in muscles. When my husband was having them frequently his doctor told him to try eating a couple of bananas each day to help with them. It worked! -
ARCHIVED East Orange, Nj-where To Eat?
sfortney replied to sfortney's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Thanks for the help guys. The idea of this trip makes me very nervous. It's my first trip since going gluten-free and I really don't want to end up sick if I can help it. Midge, did you post that message here or through email. It isn't appearing in my messages on this board. Thanks, Stephanie -
Next month I will have to be in East Orange, NJ with my husband for a few days. I am very apprehensive because I have never been to this area of the country before and have no idea what restaurants will be willing to prepare gluten-free meals for me or have any idea what I'm talking about when ordering. We will be staying near the Veterans Administration...

ARCHIVED Homemade Gf Cinnamon Rolls?
sfortney replied to kactuskandee's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
kactuskandee, I've tried the Chebe cinnamon rollups. I liked them pretty well, my son did not. They are definitely not like regular cinnamon rolls from the can or a bakery. They came out a little hard and a bit dry. It just might have been my cooking though. It was one of my first attempts at gluten-free cooking. stephanie -
ARCHIVED Blurred Vision / Dizzy
sfortney replied to KLTerry's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had a similar experience yesterday afternoon. I hadn't felt well all day and then I became lightheaded and weak as I was walking down the hall after school. My vision became blurred and I had a very sore, cramping sensation just below my navel. It didn't last more than a couple of minutes, but I was very frightened. I considered calling my father inlaw... -
ARCHIVED Couple Of Questions For Now :)
sfortney replied to 2009's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I use gluten free Tamiri Sauce instead (Tree of Life brand). It's a pretty good substitute. Sometimes I even use it instead of Worcestershire sauce. Lea and Perrins is the only gluten free brand of that sauce that I know of. -
ARCHIVED Burger King, Macdonalds, Wendys, Arbys
sfortney replied to deener's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Agreed. Better safe than sorry. I always check or we totally avoid the food in question. -
Wow! Good Luck! I hope everything turns out okay for you. Getting used to eating a new and different variety of foods is hard enough, but then when it becomes very restricting... bless your heart. If you are able to tolerate potatoes DariFree makes a really good milk substitute. You'll be in our prayers. Stephanie

ARCHIVED Couple Of Questions For Now :)
sfortney replied to 2009's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
2009, It's great to have you here! Starting a gluten free diet can be really overwhelming, but always ask questions and keep your eyes open for information. Despite the fact that most people haven't heard of celiac disease, there is information out there. I found info in magazines at the health food store and through some friends I met at an autism... -
My four year old son is on a gluten and casein free diet. We use Tofutti brand cream cheese, sour cream, and cheeses (Canadian Company). Silk brand soymilk is both casein and gluten free and is actually pretty good, just takes a little getting used to. We use Earth Balance's Soy Garden buttery spread and really like it. Also, I use Isomil baby formula...

ARCHIVED Gf Margarine
sfortney replied to BamBam's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use Earth Balance too. We really like it. The only way I can think of to make some sort of butter-type spread without soy would be from corn oil. I haven't heard of any right off hand though. Sorry. I'll post if I do. -
ARCHIVED Modified Food Starch ... Ugh!
sfortney replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I recently emailed Campbell's from their site, checking on broths and got a list from them in the mail the next week. None of the chilies are listed as gluten free, but the Chunky Chicken Broccoli Cheese, Healthy Request RTS Hearty Country Vegetable, and Savory Lentil Select Soup were. Not much to choose from for soups. I once called Kraft to check on...
