Hi Jenny! Yes, absolutely you can get a puffy face from being glutened (and other puffy stuff!) I went to a wedding a few weeks ago and spent the better part of it accidentally glutening myself despite my best efforts. Now their are all these family pictures of me looking like a whale floating around on facebook! My tummy is all big...I totally wore...

ARCHIVED Sweating One Minute, And Freezing The Next....
missceliac2010 posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hello Friends! I don't know if this is Celiac related... but lately, every morning, like clockwork, I get out of the shower and begin getting dressed, and my body goes all whacky on me!?!? I start sweating for no good reason. So I'll turn on our large standing fan to cool off and within a few minutes, I'll still be sweating, but then I'm freezing cold... -
Hello and welcome to your new life! I too am fairly new, and I went straight to Gluten-free AND lactose-free under the recommendation of my doctor. I can't possibly put all of the information you need here in one email, but I can give free advice! Do your research! Spend A LOT of time on sites like this looking up everything you can think you need to...

ARCHIVED Uggh Now D And Cramping Again!
missceliac2010 replied to precious831's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My son gets D from apple juice too! Same thing, always has. Even as a little baby, people would say "don't you give him a juice bottle?" And I'd say "not unless I want to dehydrate and kill him!" :0) Just a few weeks ago, shortly after I was diagnosed with Celiac, that same son, now 11, decided he wanted to try gluten-free too. He's feeling so much better... -
ARCHIVED Help With These Symptoms! Tmi
missceliac2010 replied to precious831's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi There, So sorry to hear you were so sick. I continue to be amazed at how sick food can make you?! Food allergies are no joke! I know you still have the lingering heartburn, etc... Of course I'm not a doc, but in my experiences, when I am glutened, or eat dairy, etc.... I am pretty messed up for a while. I think I'm healed, and then I'll throw up out... -
ARCHIVED "But You Can Eat Whole Wheat, Right?"
missceliac2010 replied to earthtoneNJ's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This just irks me! In this economy, the fact that stores like Sephora are even still alive is amazing to me! They are expensive, and then to add bad service on top....who would buy their stuff? I feel like bad customer service is like a disease lately in retail. I am a struggling new teacher, who can't find a job in this terrible economy. The school districts... -
Hi! I agree with you. I am proud of myself too. After years and years of being overweight and unable to control my eating, I had gastric bypass surgery. It changed my life. I learned that food is fuel...not my friend, not my confidant, and it doesn't have control over me! I have control over IT! The post surgery diet is very limited, and I did very well sticking...

Welcome and congrats on heading down the road to better health! I too had a lot of 'mental' symptoms. I was a manic depressive. Highs were high, lows were low. I was told I was bi-polar, had an anxiety disorder, and suffered from depression. I was on a myriad of pills including prozac and xanax. I started to really feel out of control after my last hospital...

ARCHIVED Misery Loves Company...what Do I Do?
missceliac2010 replied to jayjay57's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
So sorry you feel cruddy! When I'm glutened I tend to start a regimen of gas-x (for the bloating), pepto (because someone told me to...lol), lots of water (cause it flushes you out), and a pretty darned liquid diet (because I can't really handle "real" food anyway when I'm that bad, so boost shakes are my friend.) Good luck to you! Get well soon! -
ARCHIVED Brain Fog=Car Accident?!
missceliac2010 replied to missceliac2010's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks for all of the responses and advice. I think it was probably a combination of a lot of things, including a little bit of brain fog, a little bit of not paying enough attention, and a little bit of driving on mental cruise control. Today when I made the drive home I made a point to stay very alert, drink coffee/caffeine soda, and generally make a new... -
ARCHIVED Brain Fog=Car Accident?!
missceliac2010 replied to missceliac2010's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks Skylark. That means a lot. I'm sorry to hear about your accident. I continue to be baffled at the many ways gluten has ruined so many parts of my life. The future is bright now though! :0) -
No, if you don't get a biopsy done, you are not a fraud. In fact, I don't know why or how anyone could deal with intentionally glutening themselves with the equivalent of 4 slices of bread per day for a month or so in order to maybe get a positive result. My doctor offered me a re-test (I had a biopsy, but it was negative, but I had been very sick in the...

ARCHIVED Young Adults In Dairy Denial D:
missceliac2010 replied to HSM's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I stay away from lactose as much as possible. On the internet somewhere I found a clear listing of how much lactose is in a variety of commonly consumed milk products. I have the list posted on my refrigerator. I totally avoid cow's milk (very high level of lactose) and ice cream (also high). I do however, eat cheeses and frozen yogurt with fairly good success... -
ARCHIVED Frustrated About Incorrect, Out Of Date Posts
missceliac2010 replied to ChemistMama's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Well said Patti! I totally agree. And the date of the original post is clearly written at the beginning of the post, so it is up to the "consumer" of information to be aware of the timeliness of said information. You wouldn't pick up a 2 year old magazine at a doctor's office claiming something that is clearly incorrect and blame the doc's office for not... -
ARCHIVED More Gluten Today :(
missceliac2010 replied to firefightersgal's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Don't be too hard on yourself! Like you said, lesson learned. Life is all about lessons. I learned this week that food can be "wheat-free", but not "gluten-free." I also had a "duh" moment, where I "smacked myself in the forehead!" The worst part was that my boyfriend, who had bought the bars for me, noticed the problem right when he got home from the grocery... -
Hello Friends! I have had a perfect driving record for over a decade. I am a 35 year old woman who considers herself a very careful driver. So careful in fact, that I chose to only carry "collision" insurance on my old '91 BMW that's only worth about $1200. The car has 215,000 miles on her, and in California, we have the option of only carrying insurance...

ARCHIVED Gluten-Free For Years And Starting To Have New Symptoms
missceliac2010 replied to runnerchic's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Perhaps your pregnancy threw your body into an ultra-sensitive stage again? Pregnancy is taxing on our bodies, as is breastfeeding. In the beginning, I have heard others frequently suggest to go Lactose-free as well while your body heals. Maybe try that? Can't hurt right? Unless you already are lactose-free, in which case I am at a loss and will leave you... -
ARCHIVED Does Every Crumb Matter?
missceliac2010 replied to tina a's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
As others have said, yes every crumb matters. I went out and bought myself a new toaster for my gluten-free breads. It only cost me $7 @ Target! My Mom sews, and she even made me a fabric cover to put over the toaster when not in use so that rogue crumbs from the gluten-laden toaster next to it would not get into the appliance. She was even kind enough to... -
ARCHIVED Annoying Mouth Problems
missceliac2010 replied to Kim27's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My 11 year old son gets these mouth sores an awful lot, and I just put him on the Celiac diet last week...suspecting he got his Mom/Grandpa's genetics, and has it too. I chose to not "get him officially tested", as false negatives are just too frequent, and why put the kid through anything potentially traumatic and unnecessary?! My little man has a severe... -
I'm going to see my doc this week and getting off Prozac is a priority. Thanks for the advice skylark! The fewer meds the better in my book. I'm still amazed at how much better I feel gluten free. Gluten is some nasty stuff...! Thanks to all of you for the wonderful advice you gave me. As usual my "celiac friends" came to the rescue again! Honestly,...

ARCHIVED "But You Can Eat Whole Wheat, Right?"
missceliac2010 replied to earthtoneNJ's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My Grandma is notoriously cheap! LOL! Her version was some cheap store brand and yes, it had "wheat starch" in it. I did a little research and it said wheat is sometimes added to mustard to adjust the texture. I also think it was a "deli style" (with the little brown flecks in it), which could have been the issue. But yeah, as others have said, always read... -
Hi all! I am still working on the fine tuning of my new gluten-free life. I take a few pills every day that are prescribed to me from my doctor. I have heard that some pills can contain gluten, but I am a little overwhelmed about how I find out this information?! Do you ask the pharmacist? Your doctor? Do you look up the drug name/manufacturer/ingredients...

ARCHIVED 2Nd Opinion Of My Tests
missceliac2010 replied to Smarts's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Bottom line = Tests for Celiac suck! (My doctor told me that personally...well, technically he said inaccurate, but I like smaller words... haha. And his daughter is a Celiac, so he has lots of exp with the disease and is well-read on the subject.) You know your body! Doctor's are considered to be practicing medicine, right? Well, he can practice on someone... -
ARCHIVED Avocado & Floating Stools
missceliac2010 replied to jasonD2's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Know what's funny...I never knew that "floating stools" were not normal! Mine have "floated" most of my life, and until going gluten-free, I didn't know any better! This diet has taught me so much about nutrition! Anyhew...sorry to hear about the reaction to avocado. We Celiacs are tough! My only suggestion is to have your gall bladder looked at. I'm pretty... -
ARCHIVED 3 Years Later And Still Trying To Cope
missceliac2010 replied to Lexi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Poor thing. I feel your pain. My mom's favorite quote when I am feeling really down about my diagnosis is to say "Heather, it's not Cancer, lets keep some perspective here please!" She's an RN who runs a cancer center in my town. She sees really bad stuff every day, and she's right....it's not cancer. I remind myself of that when I get down. I also find that...
