Thanks Ravenwoodglass, I get that. You mentioned that a while back and it caused me to rethink some things and discover that I was being CCed by dog kibble. Solved that, all is well. Guess what I am wondering is, can gluten cross the skin barrier and become systemic in the body? Looks like the answer to that is no. TIA

ARCHIVED Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico gluten-free?
Mexican Trailrunner replied to dii103's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Hola Dii103, Well, maybe I can give you a couple of tips, I live here in MX. 1. Many tortillierias cut their masa (corn meal) with wheat. Many of them sell to restaurants. You must look for the 100% Masa or Elote on their building or sign before eating the tortillas. I have my favorite tortilleria and I buy their tortillas before going to a restaurant... -
Ah hah! I've had this question all along and been meaning to ask. . .looks like you guys have answered it. I've read that I need to have gluten-free hair products, cosmetics etc but then I've also read that one must ingest gluten to have a celiac reaction. So, the skin products have to be gluten-free only if there is an allergy to topical gluten too...

ARCHIVED Wishing A Cc Free Christmas!
Mexican Trailrunner replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
MERRY CHRISTMAS, one and all! Thank you for being here, thank you for this site, and mostly thank you for all your generous posts and advice. You all are spot on! This is my first celiac Christmas. Pretty much sucks, huh? I have 4 invitations for sumptuous feasts with friends but won't partake in any of them. I will, however, go and have fun and visit... -
ARCHIVED Avixis Solution
Mexican Trailrunner replied to Mexican Trailrunner's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Well, my scalp issue must be tied to accidental glutening. Today the symptoms have tapered off to none. Takes about 4 days, 2 days of symptomatic burning, itching, inflammation, tapering off for 2 days until gone on the 5th day. Thanks for all your thoughts and ideas. Marilyn -
ARCHIVED Avixis Solution
Mexican Trailrunner replied to Mexican Trailrunner's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thanks for your input, Ravenwoodglass. Looks like this hair loss thing is going to be a long road. It's inspiring to think all this might subside in the future with only minimal symptoms with accidental glutening. I do have some regrowth but I'd say I'm losing more than I'm growing back. I eat few carbs now, little soy (tho I will pay careful... -
ARCHIVED Avixis Solution
Mexican Trailrunner replied to Mexican Trailrunner's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
WheatChef: No, back of tongue and posterior oropharynx look normal. No, not a speck of dandruff. Just hair falling out. The hairs are thin, and lack the bulb at the end. Another curious thing is my skin (upper body only, especially arms and shoulders) gets a 'prickly heat' kind of feeling to it. Hard to describe, almost like a sunburn; kind... -
ARCHIVED Avixis Solution
Mexican Trailrunner replied to Mexican Trailrunner's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
WheatChef, two points. . .I don't have any sign of dandruff, and never have since this situation started 6 months ago, and most of my current candida research for the scalp lists dandruff as well. And the other is a question, do you think I need to follow a candida diet in addition to the topical application of a zole? Seems if this is candida it is... -
ARCHIVED Avixis Solution
Mexican Trailrunner replied to Mexican Trailrunner's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
WheatChef, thank you so much for taking the time to respond. Everything you say makes sense and feels right to me. I have not started, or even bought, the Avixis as I just didn't feel right about what I read. I am familiar with ketaconazole, it's readily available here, and I will try it asap. The frontal area of my scalp seems to be most affected... -
Anyone Had Dh On The Scalp?
Mexican Trailrunner replied to farmwife67's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I have it on the scalp too, but not anywhere else. Been gluten-free for only 2 months with occasional accidental glutening. When that happens my scalp gets hot and red and itchy and more hair falls out. Already have lost about 25/30% of my hair. My dermatologist has just recommended a solution called Avixis. You put it on your scalp every night for... -
ARCHIVED Glutened At Salad Bars
Mexican Trailrunner replied to quincy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What about the dressing? I'm afraid that 'glazed' does shout gluten to me. Recently got glutened by a spice rub. Anything that sticks to food probably has gluten in it. sigh -

I'm also battling hair loss, and have been since May. Never really did get the Celiac rash but my scalp gets red, burny, and itchy in addition to the hair loss. Now that I'm gluten-free (only 2 months) it did slow a bit but if I get accidentally glutened it's back with a vengeance. Am taking multi vits with biotin. Went to the derm doc the other day... -
ARCHIVED My Hair!
Mexican Trailrunner replied to Mexican Trailrunner's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
LOL Takala. Forgot to say had a full body bone scan that came up normal limits too, no osteoporosis and low risk for fracture. Believe it or not, I was very surprised. I do think I caught this thing in it's early stages. I will take your advice and buy multi-vits and B complex and consider the calmag supplements with D as well. Oh. Maybe this... -
ARCHIVED My Hair!
Mexican Trailrunner replied to Mexican Trailrunner's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks everyone, for your kind words, encouragement, and mostly your wisdom. Yes, my shampoo and rinse are gluten-free. My iron level was at the low end of normal limits but a dx of anemia was declined. Same with the thyroid, within normal limits. There is some regrowth, tho it seems to be sort of furry looking, I'll take it! My hair is also long... -
Seven weeks gluten free (more or less) and I'm coping. I can do this! It's inconvenient, it's not fun, sometimes it really sucks, but it's do-able. The best part is I feel so damn good without gluten I'm willing to put up with all the aforementioned issues. There have been a few accidental glutenings, mostly until I got a clue and figured out it was...

ARCHIVED Hot Skin
Mexican Trailrunner replied to Mexican Trailrunner's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It IS weird, isn't it. The hot flush is, for me, my first indication of glutening. And it happens after just a few bites, it's my warning signal. My doc said it might be something to do with hormones, like lack up estrogen uptake or too much estrogen uptake. It does feel like hot flashes so I think he might be on to something there. CassP mentioned... -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Cc
Mexican Trailrunner replied to Mexican Trailrunner's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You know, K8ling, now that I've done more research and had more experience with this disease, maybe not! All the sites I've read about envelope glue and postage glue say it's gluten free. What I have discovered tho is that I have been CCing myself from time to time when feeding the dog. So, very possible the envelope glue didn't cause the reaction... -

ARCHIVED Hot Skin
Mexican Trailrunner posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I haven't seen anyone else mention this, has anyone else had the sensation of having hot skin, particularly upper body and arms, when glutened? I don't get the rash. Thanks -
ARCHIVED Corn Tortillas
Mexican Trailrunner replied to BrookeT's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Seems there are 2 issues regarding tortillas here. Taste and safety in eating for celiacs. Many 'corn' tortillas are cut with wheat to make it go farther. We celiacs can only eat 100% corn tortillas. They may say: Puro Maize or Maseca, as mentioned, but you have to investigate and or read the packages. I live in Mexico and have just been diagnosed. I found... -
ARCHIVED Colonoscopy And Cancer
Mexican Trailrunner replied to Mexican Trailrunner's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi shopgirl. My fault, I forgot to say I tested positive for occult blood in the stool sample. I was glutened at the time. Also forgot to mention, the colonoscopy is not for diagnosis, it's due to the blood. In terms of formal diagnosis, I have refused the blood test and the endo due to not wanting to be glutened for the blood test and the high... -
ARCHIVED Colonoscopy And Cancer
Mexican Trailrunner posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It has been almost a month since diagnosis of Celiac and I am scheduled for a colonoscopy to see what damage has been done. I'm a little nervous. Have you all gotten colonoscopys? Have any of you had polyps or lesions that tested positive for cancer? Anybody know what the percentages are? Thanks for any info. Marilyn -
Today is not a good day. I've only been gluten-free for about 4 weeks and have been feeling very good, with the exception of a couple of accidental cc's - I licked an envelope, and a couple of other mistakes. But today, I have been very diligent but it wasn't until I read someone say their dog food had contaminated them that I grabbed the dog food bag and...

ARCHIVED Hola From Mexico
Mexican Trailrunner replied to Mexican Trailrunner's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Yes, Skylark, some do. My doc says to ask if the tortillas are made with 'maseca' (mah sec' ah) which is 100% corn masa. I've found at least 2 tortillarias in my village that do and buy only from them. BTW, Maseca tortillas taste much better too! Another challenge is to ask restaurants which tortillaria they get their tortillas from before you... -
ARCHIVED Hola From Mexico
Mexican Trailrunner replied to Mexican Trailrunner's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Thanks, Takala, for the info. Guess I'll just try the mayo, a little at first, and see what happens. Everything I read says it's ok. They must make it the same here in Mexico as they do in the states. If not, it would taste different and that wouldn't be good for their product line.
