ARCHIVED Do celiac disease Labs Take Longer For Results?
jester replied to jester's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks, everyone! I'm right outside Philly so I didn't think it would matter as much but I guess so. My doctor said he'd call either way once he heard anything. -
ARCHIVED Do celiac disease Labs Take Longer For Results?
jester posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't want to call and harass my doctor unnecessarily, so I thought I'd ask around here first. I had my blood work done for an antigliadan panel and thyroid levels last Friday. I know lab response times vary, but mine are usually back within two or three days. Is there something about the celiac lab that takes longer? I'm so curious what it says and how... -
Oh, huh. I found a new medical practice about two weeks ago when I began to suspect I may be celiac, and as it's a group practice I didn't have control over who I saw, but I noticed he was a DO and not an MD and wondered what the difference was. Now I know AND I get why he was so open to the idea of celiac and was informed. (Still hoping he ordered the...

ARCHIVED Negative Blood
jester replied to edonnelly69's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
In your reading you may have seen that many people receive false negatives (20%). Are you sure a full celiac panel was run? If they didn't test your total serum level the results are inconclusive. Also, if the diet ends up working for you, I wouldn't be too concerned with a strict diagnosis. You do need to stay on a gluten diet if more testing will be... -
ARCHIVED I Had My Doctor's Appointment!
jester replied to jester's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was only gluten-lite for maybe thirty-six hours or so, inadvertently. I can assure you I've been devouring gluten like crazy otherwise. -
ARCHIVED I Had My Doctor's Appointment!
jester replied to jester's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh! Also as soon as I mentioned I'd been on prescription antacids for a year and finally stopped taking them because they weren't working, he asked if I just had heartburn or also reflux and when I said reflux he said we're probably going to want to scope to check how the lining of your stomach and throat are holding up. I was first diagnosed with GERD... -
ARCHIVED I Had My Doctor's Appointment!
jester posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
And I LOVE my new doctor's office. The whole office was very nice and super professional. The doctor I met with listened and asked questions and let me go through my list, asking about correlations and if I had noticed X or anything, treating me like I had a brain. It was lovely. I mentioned wanting to be tested for celiac and he said absolutely; said... -
ARCHIVED Trying Not To Get Discouraged
jester replied to Sarah B's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Until you are accommodated by the disabilities office, you can make do in the dining hall, really! There should always be at least one piece of meat not doused in a sauce, and plenty of veggie sides not covered in sauces, too. Round things out with crouton-less salad and you should be okay (oil and vinegar as dressing is safe). At breakfast, eggs and fruit... -
Could she have been confusing gluten and glucose? Could English not have been her first language? When I became vegetarian I jumped on anything that looked remotely ignorant but I've learned not to be so uptight about it. If someone had ANSWERED her like that, okay, but just asking the question? At least she recognizes she doesn't know.

ARCHIVED Positive Biopsy / Negetive Bloodwork
jester replied to jamillusions's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
From what I have read and others have said, it's entirely possible for the blood work to show negative but the biopsy to be positive, and so far as I know the biop is the "gold standard" for diagnosing celiac, regardless of the blood work-up. If I were you I would consider myself a celiac, or at least gluten intolerant. Also it could take months for you to... -
ARCHIVED Really Nervious - Help With Questions For My Gastro Appointment Tomorrow
jester replied to jstanton8's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't really have anything to add - will be watching the replies for my own appt coming up, though - but I just want to say GOOD LUCK!!!! Maybe you could ask if they'd be willing to diagnose based on the results a gluten-free trial and then a gluten challenge? I could be wrong but I think others have mentioned some will do that, if the diagnosis is... -
ARCHIVED Intro And Questions About Testing Options
jester replied to worriedmama's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I hope you can get things figured out for her! I have been reading up on IBS and many websites (medical and general info) do say that being awakened is NOT an IBS symptom and you should definitely make sure the doctor checks for other causes. I have so much trouble falling and staying asleep because I'm so uncomfortable - wake up to TRY to go to... -
ARCHIVED Should I Keep A Food Diary?
jester replied to jester's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks. I got the idea when it was suggested that I'm just a really bad vegetarian and that's why I feel sick. I mean, I AM a bad vegetarian: processed food and carbs way more than fruits and veggies. But I don't think that would account for all of my symptoms like dizziness and constipation, just the gas and lethargy, maybe. (And I can't help being suspicious... -
ARCHIVED Should I Keep A Food Diary?
jester posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have been paying attention to the way I feel after I eat for the past week and I've noticed a definite difference when I eat gluten-heavy meals. I'll be tired, over-full, my heartburn is worse. Sometimes it's not very noticeable but sometimes it is - like I had a sandwich and a giant brownie Saturday for dinner and was miserable all night. Today I had two... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Have Bad Reactions To Quinoa?
jester replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I haven't had my tests done yet, and this is probably going to sound ridiculous, but at this point I really hope I have celiac. The more I read (especially here) the more I see myself. Everything I read I'm jumping in my chair going YES! YES! That's me! Sad, isn't it? I was looking up quinoa because I had it for the first time last night - felt crummy... -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Results - Help!
jester replied to jstanton8's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm curious - different labs use different scales to diagnose? So at one lab I could be positive but another they'd call it a negative?! :head hurts: Or am I misunderstanding?? (And in that case, is there a way to know what range they use before you test?!) -
ARCHIVED How Do I Approach My Doctor About The Possibility Of celiac disease?
jester replied to jester's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Of course. It may not be clear from my ranting but my problem is not in them refusing the test. It's in the lack of listening to anything I said, the not returning my calls, the not letting me speak to a nurse, and the fact that this is standard operating procedure. Changing doctors just because they don't ask how high when you say jump would indicate a bit... -
This thread is heart-breaking and scary. I just changed doctors today. My hubs is healthy as a horse so his GP is more of a stand-by for the annual physical than anything else. Little did we know that was literally true for his abilities/office. Ugh. I've always been sickly, and in the five years we've been married I've been in and out of that...

ARCHIVED Need Help With A Newspaper Submission. . ..
jester replied to elye's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hm. I'm being tested for celiac disease within the next two months and I'm actually telling my mom to get tested too because she has much of the same problems I do - and she has MS. So we'll see. -
ARCHIVED How Do I Approach My Doctor About The Possibility Of celiac disease?
jester replied to jester's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks, mushroom, I just wondered how long it took - I haven't really posted on other threads because of it (and not being diagnosed yet I don't have much to add....) Thanks for the birthday wishes. I'll let everyone know how it goes next week. I've been paying attention to how I feel more after I eat and I had corn tortilla chips and felt okay and... -
ARCHIVED Wish I Had A Diagnosis!
jester replied to vegan lisa's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm so sorry you're having such a hard time -- I'm a vegetarian and I told my husband if I'm diagnosed I'll be going back to meat because I don't think I can maintain two restrictive diets at once. I can't imagine how hard this must be for you. One reason I'm afraid to get the testing (but doing it anyway!) is because of the high rate of false negatives.... -
ARCHIVED How Do I Approach My Doctor About The Possibility Of celiac disease?
jester replied to jester's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I did try asking to speak to the nurse at my PCP's but all I get is she's busy, make an appointment. The GI won't order them because she's never seen me before. The GI is mailing me the new patient paperwork to fill out before my appointment, though, so once they get that back she might be able to. In the meantime, today I'm PCP-shopping. I think I know... -
ARCHIVED How Do I Approach My Doctor About The Possibility Of celiac disease?
jester replied to jester's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
ARGH. I finally worked up the courage to call. I ask if the doctor could order tests for me. She asks my name (which I'm sure she recognizes), after a pause she stutters out 'I would make an appointment', and then asks what kind of tests. I start to answer and she cuts me off with a 'be with you shortly' and puts me on hold. comes back minutes later... -
ARCHIVED How Do I Approach My Doctor About The Possibility Of celiac disease?
jester replied to jester's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes! It's just - at least I know in my case - I feel like the doctors would know best, right? So I don't push or question. But that's so not true, especially for something like this. It's only 6AM (heh) but when the office opens I'll call and ask to have him order a celiac panel - and also is there a blood test for lactose? I do think I should check on... -
ARCHIVED How Do I Approach My Doctor About The Possibility Of celiac disease?
jester replied to jester's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks. Jestgar, it was really that easy? I've sort of been steeling myself against what sounds like the general ignorance and resilience of the American medical system. I don't know that my doctor would do that without me coming in; the receptionist is really snotty about process. Should I try that? I mean, if it isn't celiac disease I'd probably...
