Hello!
I live in Columbus and would also really love to hear about the local eateries! Been here 4 years and my biggest complaint is that there is very little in the way of good food!
I've heard of the Raisin Rack but never been. Is their gluten-free section any better than Wild oats or Whole Foods?
I'm going to do the best I can to save up money for all the good shopping! I can see my husband's eyes rolling as I type this! LOL
As far as I know, there isn't any Eddie Bauer outlet, but Columbus is headquarters for all of Les Wexners stores. (ie Gap, Banana Republic, Limited, Victoria Secret) All of those headquarters have local wharehouses that occassionally have employee sales, but I've not heard of a public outlet.
KrisT:
If you haven't gone to the Raisin Rack I have to recommend HIGHLY you drive there as fast as you can! They have a much better selection than any of the chain organic/health food stores. The person who does their ordering is a retired physician. She also is Celiac. There is an entire isle of only gluten-free foods. A wonderful freezer section of only gluten-free foods. It is easy to navigate and there are more options there than anywhere I have shopped. I live in Bellefontaine. It is an hour from the Raisin Rack and I make a special trip in to shop for my food at least once a month. I wish I lived closer! I tell everyone about their store. Good luck shopping and let me know how you like it.

Wont it be nice to go to a conference where you do not have to make special arrangements for the lunch/snack portion of the meeting! I might just go for that luxury again.
-
Thanks for the link. I will check it out. I live Northwest of Columbus in Bellefontaine so I wouldn't be a difficult trip.
Is this a conference put on by Childrens Hospital? How can I find out the progam agenda? I am an adult onset/diagnosis and not interested in learning about childhood issues. -

jillian: Are you sure they have Italian and Greek? I just checked and I did not see that option. Any chance you would have a phone number for the people that make the cards? I am traveling next month to Greece and Italy. It would be fantastic to be able to hand the card to a waiter and have them understand. Any help you can offer would be great!!!!

Hi Friends:
Can anyone make a recommendation for travel. I will be taking a cruise in October. Starting in Venice, Italy and stopping in Athens, Mekenose and Croatia. (Not bragging really, just very, very lucky!) I have thought several times about just giving up on trying to stay gluten free. I know this isn't the best choice, but it is an option. How have you handled travel outside of North America. I unfortunatly do not speak any Italian or Greek. I know the Cruise line should be able to help me out however, I am spending a conciderable amount of time on land and will want to eat.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I went on the Akins diet 2 years ago. It was great. I lost a significant amount of weight. (I am the unusual overweight celiac) It was great. But when I reintroduced heavy carbs back into my diet, boom...the celiac symptoms hit. I didn't know what was happening and it took about 6 months of doctoring and a mysterious invitation to a social workers continuing education program on celiac disease to figure out what was going on. (I am not a social worker, thats where the mystery comes in.) So I would say the severe decrease in gluten while on the Akins diet triggered my celilac to manafest and ...actually... if you think about it...saved my life. If I had never recognized these symptoms I would have had a sluggish life followed quite possibly with colon cancer. So over all, I would have to say I am glad to have finally been diagnosed. ?crazy statement? or is it?!

Do triple sec or Grand Marnier contain gluten?

Yet again the reward (or occasionally enticement) for the team having accomplished some horrible goal at work is to bring in pizza. Yay, yahoo, my enthusiasm knows no bounds. I will join in the jolly fellowship, drink some Coke, and sit at the far end of the table to avoid getting their crumbs in my lunch from home. I assure them I'm fine, thanks, there's nothing they can get me from the pizza place, it's okay, they don't have to struggle to find something to include poor little me, but inwardly I stew in my bitter celiac juices and wish them all digestive harm. Okay, I'm being overly dramatic, it has been a frustrating couple of months, but don't you just wish there was some appropriate way to balance out the karma of having to watch them scarf down hot, cheesy, doughy triangles of joy while you don't? Does this happen to you and what goes on in YOUR heads? The doughnuts, the birthday cakes, the continental breakfasts at the hotel where your business meeting is (which has no other breakfast option). I did bring in Enjoy Life No-Oats Oatmeal cookies once after giving up on trying to eat them, which was almost like revenge as I watched the look of revulsion on each person's face as they tried one (they still remember the "shellfish-free" cookies with awe). What would be an appropriate way to balance karma?
I am rather rough so that people will just leave me alone. I tell them their food is poison for me. The people who know me laugh and the people who dont know me leave me alone. Mission accomplished. It does anger me when my supervisors who know me offer a contest with a gluten prize at the end. I am not motivated. How about a gift certificate at least. Or Starbucks for the office when it is a team prize.

Did you slap him in the face. How inappropriate! I would tell everyone I knew what an insensitive goof he was. I might even stand outside his office with a sign warning potential patients. How disgusting!

I'd just write a note back telling them that, given that they have little regard for keeping abreast of the ingredients in their products, and for the lack of interest in the the health of their consumers, that you will no longer be using their products. In addition, you will be posting their response on the Celiac forum so that other gluten-intolerant patients will know of their apathy, and you will also encourage your friends to discontinue purchasing their products. At least you might get their attention.
GREAT suggestion.

Sorry to hear so many people have had a bad experience at Bob's. The Bob's in our town is obviously run by more intellegent people. I have never had a problem there. I even called the company and they sent me a list of ingredients for a large number of their menue items they thought would be appropriate for me to eat at any Bob's resturant I would vist across the country. Maybe it is just your local resturants that are a problem.

my quest to find a cure for my unknown illness, now dx as celiac disease, started with my weird vision problems.
Blurred vision, pressure, crusty feeling, focus difficulties. All sorts of other symptoms too but this is really a pain in the you know what.
Can anyone relate??
nobread4me, I exeperience what the doctor called a visual migrane. That was the first sign I went to the doctor for before being diag. w/celiac. Now I know when I have been glutened because my visiion gets weird. My perscription changed also. My doctor is having a hard time understanding the changes. He is not familiar with Celiac and how it relates to vision. Oh, well. The good part is my sight is getting better. Good luck. Stay gluten free and hopefully your vision and other symptoms will go away.

I think the most important thing here for all of us to remember isn't if we can eat fries at McD's or not. The most important thing is make sure the information they give us is correct. I can live without fries. On the road I can stop at the convenience mart for chips. Or take fruit on trips. When I travel I can make other arrangements. I just want to know when I go into any resturant and tell them I need gluten free or I research their web site before patronizing them I learn what is correct.
Lets just start an email/letter writing campaign stateing our needs.

I think people should just trust what their body is telling them. If they've had problems with the fries...stay away from them. If you have never experienced symptoms from eating the fries and you *know* how your body responds to gluten..then I'd guess its safe to eat the fries. I'm sure plenty of people who've been eating the fries with no problems have also had follow-up biopsies or bloodwork showing that they've healed. If you are not getting sick from the fries but are still in doubt....why not get some bloodwork done after eating the fries for a few months.
Great suggestion

Are a couple of studies I came accros while looking into gluten and neurological symptoms, brain fog and memory problems.
The first one is from M Hadjivassiliou in Sheffield who has quite a few studies on line in this field.

OMG!!! Donna:
Thanks for posting these studies. My initial symptoms of celiac disease were the blurry vision. My doc told me the blurry vision was the precurser to a Migrane. The symptoms passed. I refused the Migrane meds and continued to seek help. Blah, Blah, Blah...Long story short, we ignored the blurry vision, I went gluten-free. Blurry vision left until just yesterday!!!! Accidental glutening from salad bar at work. (guess I just need to take my own food EVERYDAY! I did use my own dressing) Anyway, I posted a question yesterday morning concerning this blurry vision and foggy headedness. I can't wait to show my eye doc.
God Bless you for posting!

I got a similar vague response from Mary Kay. They couldn't tell me yes or no, just read me something off the computer screen in front of them about "we refer you to your doctor on what is best for you". My doctor says "no gluten". I don't need to ask him! I love MK foundation, it is the only one that works for me, and I just bought 3 bottles, so I don't know what to do. Can gluten be used in any makeup, even eyeliner and eyeshadow?
A friend recently started selling MK. I ordered mascara. I used to love their mascara. Luckily for me I checked the ingredients. Because listed in big black letters where the words, "wheat protien". I sent it back. Bummer

The basic question for me is ...Have I had a reaction or haven't I? When I am "glutened" I break out with DH and have the wonderful bowl dissorders.
So far, McD's fries have been fine.

What is your secret for getting out of them? I ususally bring some gluten-free muffins and a veggie tray and just eat my own food - but I'd LOVE to just be able to avoid potlucks completely!!!
I make sure I am out of the area during lunch. For quite a few I have been off work the day of the pot luck. Lucky me. But if I am there I work through lunch, I tell them I will be there shortly.
I have done pot luck style with my family. And before I can go through the food line to eat the one item I brought, it seems someone forgets and contaminates my gluten-free contribution. So I just never participate.
Hope this helps.

Could it just be you are not drinking alcohol as much as you did before you were diagnosed and your tolerence level how gone done? Basically you may just be getting "drunk" faster than you are used to.
I know I have gotten drunk quicker because I have been drinking vodka when I used to be a beer drinker.
Also, I read a low carb diet lowers your alchol tolerence. I've experinced that at a Bruce Springsteen concert. Bob Dylan came out and played a song with him which I had to be told had happened. Anyway since we are not eating bread, grains etc maybe all out tolerences are effected.
Just my two cents.
Good thought. I certainly don't know. I sure eat enough of rice and the various flours that are allowed in this gluten-free diet. You could be right. Thanks for your two cents

Here is a weird question. Has anyones tolerance to alcohol changed? I can't drink ANY form of alcohol anymore. I love wine. There is no gluten in wine and I would assume my reaction to wine should be the same now as it was before going gluten free. But no, 2-3 glasses transforms me into a very volital person. I anger easily and throw little hissy fits. I have embarrased my husband on two seperate occasions now. I have decided not to consume wine any more but that is bumming me out. I have already given up so many things. I understand a life can be full and fun without wine or alcohol and I reallly wont miss much. I just do enjoy the relaxing nature it used to offer. Hope there is someone out there that can shed some light on this for me.

Sheesh. I mean, I know it's not a huge deal. It's just something that I didn't do very often before (I'd maybe throw together a sandwich a few times a week, the rest of the time I'd either hit a place on the way in, try my luck with the wheel o' death, or order out). It just gets to be a real pain in my ass to have to think of something different to pack and make the dang thing every single night. What a boring routine. Blah.
I have a reputation at work as being a gormet cook. I always take left overs from the night before. I tend to cook a lot with rice and beans. It is easy and high in fiber. Most people I work with eat fast food for all three meals and maybe a snack. But yes, I am sick of all of the dishes, the bags of food I must carry with me, and making sure whatever I cook is enough for the evening meal and the next day's lunch.
While we are venting about food. How about the pot luck's! I never participate. Up to this point I have found very clever ways out of them so people don't think I am a snob. I am afraid my luck is going to run out!
Gluten -- I Cheated And It Was So Good
in Coping with Celiac Disease

It is so good to hear so many of you have such strong resolve. I have been gluten free for 2.5 yrs. AND I WANT TO EAT NORMAL!!! Not all of the time...but a pizza shop pizza and a beer keep appearing in my dreams! I have been thinking about trying it out to see what happens. Although I have been thinking about it for over a year. I am somewhat of a chicken. Friday night I did eat tortilla chips at a local Mexican Resturant that I was pretty sure where CC. The worst reaction was brain fog. Not pleasant but if planned might be tolerable for a piece or two of pizza. Then again that isn't eating normal is it? If I have to take so much though to gluten myself. Well, I am rambleing, but I really would like to cheat (yes, cheat myself) and probably will at some point. Regardless of the outcome. One last thought on this topic however. I fear nothing noticable will happen and I will loose my families support. Probably the biggest reason I haven't done it yet.
