  1. There was a post recently that the pre-formed charcoal briquettes can contain wheat as a binder. What kind of grill were you using? Not sure how to post a link but you'll find if if you run a search for briquettes.
  2. First off, thanks for your insights! Yes, allergy testing was recommended. Like your husband, I occasionally get food stuck and only agreed to a biopsy because I was to have my esophagus dilated at the same time. My positive blood testing (with family history - brother and aunt with celiac) was enough to convince me of the celiac. Of course, the dilation...
  3. Hi, I had a biopsy recently and discovered that I have Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EE). It's also called schatzki rings. My doc says it's due to an allergy. Did anyone else discover they also have EE when they got biopsied? It's an allergic response and I'm not sure if it's just from the gluten or if there's another food that I'm allergic too. ...
  4. We got a rice cooker (~$15 @ Target) and now get the huge bags of rice. I also mix in beans towards the end of the cooking cycle. A huge batch will make several meals and is always ready in the fridge.
  5. I'm a month gluten-free and don't think I can tolerate broccoli right now (same reaction you describe). Too many beans are bad too. It might be something you are eating.
  6. Hello, I'm recently diagnosed and was wondering if anyone has a short/quick way of describing Celiac Disease to the average clueless person (of which I was a few weeks ago). Talking about 'gluten' is too hard to digest (pun intended) for the average person. I've thought about just saying I'm allergic to eating wheat and describing it better if they're...
  7. Hi, I recently learned that I have celiac and switched to a gluten-free diet two weeks ago. In the meantime, I'm continuing to work out (moderate running ~30min about 4 days per week [varies from 7-9 min/mile], stretching, and light lifting a couple days too). I've always been very active but have had more of a pudgy frame (thanks gluten). I'm in my...
  8. You (and your parents) should look into establishing something formal with the school. My limited knowledge is on an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) that's binding on the school. It's generally used for things like tutors and sometimes special medical needs. Not sure if this is the right vehicle but will hopefully get you started in the right direction...
  9. I hear you on the beer front. My older brother (who I suspect has it too) was shocked when I told him I had celiac along with our younger brother. When I told him it meant no more beer, he responded with, "(Expletive)! There's no way I'm getting tested then!"
  10. Jumping on this late... sorry. I'm a guy and turn 37 this weekend and just found out that I have Celiacs two weeks ago. The chronic constipation was finally too much. The doc I initially saw told me to eat more veggies and whole grains and less cheese. I insisted on the celiac panel and wasn't surprised when the test came back positive. The signs and...
  11. Not yet. I just found out myself and have been gluten-free for only 10 days or so. We'll have her tested soon. She's growing fine, developmentally hitting all the milestones and doesn't show any outward signs or symptoms. She'll definitely be tested, it's just a matter of when. I plan to ask that question to my GI this afternoon. But, thanks for the...
  12. My wife and daughter still have gluten (I think that's all my daughter would eat anyway) and I don't blame them. I'm stuck with it but they don't have to be. The logistics of the whole food preparation and family meals is all out of balance but we'll settle into a new routine soon. I try to keep in mind that with all that challenges we face in life, changing...
  13. Hi, I was recently diagnosed with celiac and turn 37 next week. As for the gas, I can relate. My buddies still tease me about clearing out the weight room in high school lifting practice after having pizza the night before. So, I've had similar experiences with gas that you describe but it has been complicated with much more constipation in recent years...
  14. Congrats on the first six months! I'm only 10 days into this and it's a real struggle at times. My wife and 2 yr old are not celiac so it's an adjustment for all of us. I'm glad to hear that it gets easier. That's great that your numbers came back fine! Definitely celebrate!
  15. Hi, My initial bloodwork recently came back as positive for Celiac. I had the test done thru my family doc and now have an appt to see a GI on Monday. However, I have a two year old daughter, who has never shown any signs or symptoms of celiac. Then again, my signs were pretty subtle too so that's a tough gauge to go by. We wouldn't be good parents...
  16. Thanks for the insights and responses. Tomorrow will mark my first gluten-free week and I honestly don't see the utility of the biopsy, or going back to non-gluten-free foods for that matter. I found out by requesting the test with my (new) family medicine doc. My signs were mostly subtle over the years so it was a slight surprise. I've got an appt to...
  17. I'm curious what your blood numbers were. I was just positive myself and turn 37 shortly. Mine seemed high but I don't have any reference to someone else with celiac. I'm trying to determine if a biopsy is even worth the time and money. Good luck as I just went gluten-free last week!
  18. Hello, Here's my first post... thanks for reading! Last week, my blood test for Celiac came back positive. My results were as follows: Tissue Transglutimainase (tTG) reading: 96 Gliadin Peptide Antibody reading: 74 Celiac Disease Dual Antigen Screen: 131 For each case, the nominal range is 0-19 units. To add to this, my brother was...
