  1. In these situations, when it is my good friend's event, I usually just ask him/her if it would be possible for me to get something gluten-free (and explain what that is), and say that, if not, it's no big deal, and I will just eat before the event. The bride/groom are usually in very frequent conversations with the caterers, so it's not an imposition to...
  2. i eat salads all the time, so i don't think it's due to them... last night (when i had another "episode") i also had a LOT of fat free whipped cream, which is basically skim milk and sugar. could a lactose issue cause this violent reaction?
  3. before i was diagnosed, i used to have diarrhea sometimes. now that i have been diagnosed, i feel like i get it MORE, and not just in reaction to gluten. i get it randomly, and like RIGHT after eating, and i can see pieces of whatever i've just eaten in it. i know this is so so so gross, but this is the only place i can ask about it. is this because my...

    ARCHIVED Plane Food

i'm flying on american to south america- what do they serve?
  5. oh, man, do i hear you!!! i have been having some problems with candy and ice cream binges-- to the point where i feel literally HUNG OVER in the morning sometimes. for some reason, even though i know i will wind up feeling worse, in the moment it feels unavoidable to go for some more m&ms. (i like the peanut ones myself!) have any more experienced...

    ARCHIVED Nyc Therapy?

Hi, I was diagnosed about 2.5 months ago, and I was recently talking to a friend of mine who is a medical resident who said that in her program they really stress encouraging patients who are making big lifestyle changes (like all of us!) to see a therapist to talk through their struggles. This doesn't sound like a bad idea to me, but I have ZERO interest...

    ARCHIVED Vietnamese Food

hey kerrera, most dishes include soy sauce, so there's probably wheat in there, sorry to tell you. also, rice paper and rice noodles always are made w/rice flour, BUT they also often include wheat-based flour, so you really need to be careful. sorry to be the buzzkill, guys...
  8. would you mind sending it to me too? (sorry to hassle you!) aljf4@yahoo.com

i talked to them on the phone too-- the frap that we can't have is the java chip one. (the chips are the problem)

    ARCHIVED Sushi

also, sometimes the ginger has m.s.g., which is no good. and avoid "spicy" sauce stuff (like spicy tuna, etc.)-- usually has soy sauce involved w/wheat. i love sushi too! oh, and i think the salad w/that great japanese ginger dressing is a no-no-- again, soy sauce in the dressing. i *think* miso soups are usually fine, but i'm not sure on that one......
  11. hi, are the people who started this thread still around?? because i really relate to what you have written, and i'd love to talk more... i was diagnosed w/celiac disease almost 2 months ago, and i have struggled w/binge eating for years (have also had episodes of anorexia, bulimia... basically i'm ednos (eating disorder not otherwise specified)). so this...
  12. I don't think that was rude at all, and you needn't worry about it. A lot of people don't eat sweets anyway and would have done the same thing. If you thanked the boss, that was fine. Besides, from what you said, it sounds like ALL the assistants got the same basket, so it's not like your boss went to a lot of trouble to select a gift just for *you* (in...
  13. Which cheeses have gluten and which don't? I know bleu cheese is a no-no, but what about feta and gorgonzola? (I'm asking about them because of similar textures.) I am also pretty sure that hard cheeses are fine, but what about in-between cheeses like brie? Thanks!
  14. Oh yes, we've all been here! If possible, I would have my fiance explain the situation or, if he felt comfortable, I would call the people myself and explain it. In addition, if you get a chance, offer to bring something, like an appetizer--> then you can make sure there will be *something* that you can eat! And, of course, don't just bring beer-- bring...

    ARCHIVED Aaaaaaaaaack

Thank you so much Pat, Carrie, Sally, Ianm, Kaiti, all of you... I especially appreciate the "tough love" words. The truth is that I *do* need to just "get real," as Dr. Phil would say. (I just love him.) My stomach IS a lot better when I eat well for a few days, and it is in bad shape when I don't. The truth is that I have been eating a lot of gluten...
  16. i just ate a huge stack of cookies leftover from a group lunch at work! aaaack! help! why do i keep doing this?! already feel sick!
  17. I don't know if it's too late for you to read this, but I live near your hotel-- the closest health food store is on 2nd avenue (like 2 blocks east of your hotel, cross Lexington, then 3rd avenue, then you are at 2nd avenue), and a few blocks north (I think between either 43rd and 44th or 44th and 45th) on the west side of the avenue. It's called something...
  18. I'm wondering if the tiredness (and, it sounds like, some depression) might be because you aren't getting enough carbs now? All this cutting out of things from your diet sounds like you aren't eating much. I know that when I'm not eating enough, I get tired and sad. What about grains like brown rice and carbs like corn (and corn chips!)? I know I probably...
  19. Hi, I was diagnosed (bloodwork + endoscopy) a few weeks ago, and I am a single person living in NYC. Which means, basically, I eat out almost every meal. I am already seeing how difficult and stressful this will be, and that I need to learn to cook some meals. SO I bought a Betty Hagman book, but even that seems overwhelming-- and her recipes are generally...
  20. That was a silly thing for a doctor to say! She IS right that celiac disease is finally getting some attention-- but it is well-deserved attention if 1 in 133 people in the US have celiac disease, and only 4% know it! (U of MD study) Your blood test results are mixed and suggest possible celiac disease. In a case like yours, the endoscopy would be recommended...
  21. Open Original Shared Link this is the university of maryland's website. they are the leader in research. this page has their advice re: diagnosis.
  22. Hi, Your doctor seems to have given you a lot of wrong advice, which I have found to be the case with a lot of doctors. #1) Positive bloodwork is *indicative* of celiac disease, but not 100% proof. The only way to really know for sure is to have an endoscopy. The gluten-free lifestyle is a MAJOR change and stress, and, so I would really make sure you...
  23. i have NO time in the morning either, and something that has worked for me is making these south beach diet crustless quiche cups-- i'm sure the recipe is on the web somewhere if you just google it. i make a big batch every few weeks, then freeze them and pop them in the microwave for a minute before i eat. you can leave out the cheese if you have dairy...
