  1. I'm new to the diet and I've been dreading any bread products. I saw gluten-free Bisquick at the store the other day and picked up a box, thinking that I may get sick of canned tuna and hard boiled eggs and give it a whirl. This morning I made pancakes for my kids (regular) and they looked so good. I was just about to pour myself a bowl of cereal when...
  2. Someone told me that just being in the microwave could contaminate my food, so I wasn't sure. I may need to use a microwave next week that is used by many people. So bringing paper plates, plastic wrap, etc. would be a good idea?
  3. I hear people talk about having symptoms after accidentally eating gluten. Some of these symptoms seem pretty severe. I'm guessing that these symptoms haven't always been present (vomiting, etc.) so I'm curious how soon they started after you began the gluten-free diet? I've been told you become more sensitive to gluten over time. If, for example...
  4. My family uses the microwave to warm up food, etc. and often that food has gluten in it. Should I be worried to use the microwave after they have used it? Is simply wiping it down enough?
  5. I just started the diet so I guess it's best to leave them out for right now just in case? I'm already afraid that I'm accidentally ingesting gluten somehow and just don't know it. I've really liked the Women's One-A-Day and I'd like to keep taking them if possible.
  6. I've been taking Women's One-A-Day for over a year now and with my recent diagnosis I figured I should look it up. Seems that they can't guarantee anything to be gluten-free. Centrum said that while they don't add gluten to anything, they can't guarantee there wasn't cross contamination of raw ingredients before they got them and they don't do end product...
  7. Thanks. Until today I was feeling very relieved to finally know what was wrong. I thought I was completely prepared and it's the little things that are getting me. Since my whole family isn't going gluten-free, I don't know how to know that I'm not getting any gluten at all. I'm making myself space in one cabinet and such, but I see so many "what...
  8. Thank you so much for all the ideas - they are so helpful! There is usually fresh fruit available at breakfast, along with breakfast meats such as bacon, eggs, sausage, etc. The fruit they offer is often pre-cut in a big bowl. With kids moving back and forth (and dragging biscuits across it,) I can already see it being a problem. Right now I plan...
  9. I had my endoscopy this morning. When I woke up my husband was there and I asked the nurse if she could tell me if he saw anything. All she said was, "Nothing too terrible, I think." So I guess I got my hopes up that maybe, after all, I wouldn't have to go gluten-free. The GI comes over and tells me that he will know the biopsy results soon but didn...
  10. My students have watched me lose 70 pounds this year. They know something isn't right. And they are older (not elementary.) Stomach issues are part of why I'm hoping this will work. 3 hour hiking expeditions don't go so well with diarrhea.
  11. I see so many gluten-free snacks that have nuts. I already have a nut allergy so those are out but they look good! Thanks! Do you know of any other brands that are typically gluten-free.
  12. Thanks for the replies. I wasn't planning on transitioning myself in, but I can see where that would work. My husband and I have spent the last week reading up on the diet and going through our kitchen. Bringing my own cereal and such is a great idea. I didn't think about salad dressing. I know there is usually salad served there, along with fresh...
  13. I was diagnosed with Celiac last week via blood test and have an endoscopy tomorrow to confirm. I'm a middle school teacher and each year I take my students on a 4-day, 3-night trip to an outdoor education facility. We spend the week hiking, canoeing, rock climbing, etc. All food is provided by the facility in a dining-hall like setting. They do make...
  14. I figure the next few days will be spent de-glutenizing the kitchen and such. Does a checklist of sorts exist for making sure you have thought of everything? I made muffins this morning and as the kids were dipping the butter to put on the muffin and putting the knife right back in the butter, I realized that I wouldn't be able to keep doing stuff like...
  15. So pretty much either way I need the diet?
  16. Thank you for the replies. So I don't have to get an endoscopy? I bought one book, "first year with celiac" (or something like that) and someone else loaned me some gluten-free info and books. I hate being put to sleep. I felt like I couldn't breathe right before they put me under for the colonoscopy. I know it's only a few minutes but it still scares...
  17. I've been having some stomach problems since last August (2010.) Doctor has suspected Crohn's and IBS. Since August I've lost almost 70 pounds and have had terrible bloating, cramps, sometime diarrhea, and gas. My hair falls out and I can't remember simple things much more often than I ever used to. The last month or two I've found myself more and more...
