  1. Something I have noticed for the past year or so, and I continue to have after being gluten-free for 3 weeks, is the following - sometimes after lunch I get a non-localized sensation from my guts of warmth. It reminds me of the feeling you get after drinking a big gulp of wine on an empty stomach. It will last for hours. Does anyone else every experience...
  2. I'm afraid of my dental floss now - there is no ingredients list, yet it is flavored, and who knows what all goes into the 'wax' they put on it. Does anyone know anything about this? Also, what about trips to the dentist? Do you talk to him ahead of time to be sure that none of the substabces they use in cleaning your teeth has gluten?
  3. Gee, just when I thought I was getting the hang of this.... I see Barbara's Puffins (Peanut Butter) in the store, it says Wheat Free on the front, so I buy it and eat a few. Then I look at the ingredients. Duh, I am so stupid. What a great way to learn wheat free is not gluten-free. Now I am feeling very lightheaded an hour or two later. I feel...
  4. In Bangkok there is a lot of 'street food' that is cooked right in front of you, mostly of the 'satay' meat-on-a-stick variety, although they call it moo-yang or guy-yang. It's probably pretty safe. I ate it all the time before I was diagnosed w/ celiac disease. You can usually get plain rice with it. Also lots of fresh fruits. As for the restaurants themselves...
  5. My wife had my kids in to see the doctor for some other stuff today, and she asked if they should have blood tests for celiac disease, given that I likely have it. His answer was "no way - they are not showing any symptoms." Apparently he also added that the tests are expensive.
  6. I think there is confusion in the last couple of posts... I'v been gluten-free for a week, and I want to get another blood panel to corroborate my initial diagnosis - if I do that within the next week, I'm hoping there are still enough antibodies that the full panel will catch them. I think what Sally was getting at is perhaps next week's tests won't be...
  7. Yeah. This same doctor made a comment about it being 'overdiagnosed.' Idiot. Anyway, I am in the process of trying to get an appointment with a GI. I'm going to ask them to do the full blood panel. But unless I hear otherwise from a GI I can trust, I am staying 100% gluten-free.
  8. Well I got my numbers: gliadin IgA = 21 (0-19 normal) - this was called a 'weak positive' gliadin IgG = 82 (0-19 normal) - moderate/high transglutamase = 4 (0-19)- normal I'm still trying to interpret tham all and get some idea of the probability that I was correctly diagnosed. A co-wroker's wife is a doctor and her 'opinion' is that it is 'trendy...
  9. They got back to town yesterday. This whole thing has got me so frazzled that I screamed at my wife this morning. I feel like such a jerk. Funny how I am physically feeling better but mentally I am shot. Just dropped $250 on new cookware and kitchen stuff. Spent the AM cleaning and tossing stuff out. My wife agreed for now to throw out the flour. They...
  10. Well I know you all are no strangers to this discussion, and I can't really share this with anyone else... Before my diagnosis, I got the big D on the avergae about 1 in 10 days, and serious cramps about 1 in 4 days. But even on the 'good days' my BMs were rather bothersome and somehow just wrong - rather loose and usually foul-smelling, and it seemed...
  11. No, I don't know the details, my doctor didn't give me much info - obvioulsly he doesn't know much about it to begin with. I'll be asking for more info on the next visit. Here's a question - for the blood test to be accurate, do you currently have to have gluten in your body? If you have been gluten-free for a year, will the blood test still indicate you...
  12. That is EXACTLY what I am dealing with. The idea that I'm making all this change and sacrifice and spending extra $$, and that I can still get hit and not even know it, and totally waste all this effort. I got my dog's dry dog food all over my hands this AM and just about freaked out. I don't even know if it has gluten, but my mindset now is - if I don't...
  13. Good news : I see there is such a wealth of information on specific brands and food items that are gluten-free or not. And specifics items at specific restaurants. Bad news: How to handle all this info in any easy way? My first response, as I am a bit of a cheap-skate and a neo-Luddite, is to print it all out, but lugging around even a small notebook...
  14. Thanks everyone for the great posts! I'm defintely trying to see the bright side of this - the healthy diet. You know, the idea of giving up certain foods does not bother me so much. Even the ones I really like. The thing that is getting to me is all the little nit-picking and worry about getting contaiminated by trace amounts - to do all this work and...
  15. What do you think about having a second set of blood tests done through a different doctor/lab? Preferably a doctor that does not have his head up his a$$ with regards to celiac disease, like mine.
  16. Interesting about the joint/bone pain. I've been having that A LOT. I told myself it was from working out too hard. I'm certainly looking forward to it abating as my body gets healthier! I'm also hoping it helps with the lethargy I've been feeling for months. I've read that weight loss is a common problem for celiacs who are eating gluten, but I never...
  17. Kaiti: Thanks for the info. I'm also concerned because (a) my Dr. doesn't seem to know much about this and doesn't see it as a big problem and ( I went for about 2.5 years of mild symptoms before being diagnosed. I feel like no matter how careful I am now, I am Mr. Walking Cancer Candidate. Does anyone know if breathing in flour inadvertantly...
  18. Thanks for all the great responses folks. I feel right at home. The last few days have been nothing but frustration - I have spent an ungodly amount of time at the store reading labels and I already don't trust most of them. I know it will get easier, though. Anyway here is a question that has been bugging me... Suppose you go on vaction for two weeks...
  19. Well thanks for the warm welcome. I'll tell you something interesting about what my Dr. said... I asked him "If I injest gluten, accidentally or not, will it be dangerous to my well being, or simply cause my annoying symptoms (gas, cramps, D)?" He said it would not have any ill-effects on me long term (!?) After scouring the web on celiac disease the...
