  1. Wow! That's quite a post. Well, I was only diagnosed about 3 weeks ago, and while I'm sure my family and husband have gotten an earful in this early stage, the plan is to be pretty quiet about it in future. I was actually glad to hear your view point, as its an excellent reminder of how wrong this could all go. My husband is not into anything or anyone high...
  2. Thank you! I must be doing something right because I already researched where the whole foods is and which restaurants are gluten-free in the area we are in. Already packing a larger than usual carry on so that I can load up with foods that are OK for me (I'm also allergic to casein, so any dairy is off limits). Good to know I didn't miss anything glaring...
  3. Thank you...yes, I totally get this. Just got off the phone with my older brother and told him. He seemed very reluctant to listen (still in the "you're a weak hypochondriac, oversensitive to life" mind frame with me). I told him it was a 50/50 with him (if not 100%, because both my mom and dad are of irish/engl decent and seem to have issues that could easily...
  4. thank you - yes, my doc is incredibly thorough (and a naturopath, so he believes in looking at the whole system). He caught the Vit D deficiency right away (that is result of the gut going flat...that's where your Vit D is produced!). So I'm already tackling that. Thanks for the words.
  5. Less pissed off…. ha.

  6. So now I'm getting a bit nervous...first time traveling since diagnosis. Any ideas for me? Things you've happily discovered in airports, etc? I'm flying out of NYC to Florida....and I know myself, I'll be busy taking care of 5yo and dealing with husband unwinding for vacation. Last thing I'll need is not having anything to eat. What do you all do as a routine...
  7. I have luckily found a really good naturopathic doc that sees Celiac in a very systemic, holistic way....he says that the inflammation in the gut actually causes (or aggravates) inflammation elsewhere in the body (maybe it's a quick way to describe fact that your body is not well, and cannot tackle each instance of inflammation as it comes up, not sure)....
  8. wow! that was a LOT of information...and you're right, we do sound similar. I believe mine went on from about 8 till now (45), so I think it will definitely take awhile. I will read through all this again, thank you so much for taking the time to write it all down. I'm so incredibly hopeful (overall, a good sign!), but yes, yesterday I was PISSED at my past...
  9. Thanks so much! This makes perfect sense. I think I'll just bite the bullet and get him to one of the docs at the Columbia Disease Center, so that a proper test is done. Again, thanks for all the info.
  10. thank god, i thought there wasn't any! so it's Tofutti cheese?
  11. You might start reacting more strongly to gluten at first. Don't let this discourage you. It's your body getting stronger & your immune system more capable. I noticed that after a year, my reactions markedly decreased & now they're much lower than they were before I was gluten free, but that adjustment period can be hard. Good luck!
  12. Hi all, Thanks to anyone willing to tackle this. Just diagnosed 3 wks ago (I'm 45), likely this has been going on since childhood
  13. If you know of a ped. who specializes in celiac disease, I would very much go for it. However, you might be surprised at how unlikely this is, even in large cities. There is SO little knowledge about this disease in the USA, it's pathetic. We've been looking 2 years now for good doctors in all the fields we need, and still looking. Wishing you...
  14. Really Pissed Off.

  15. Son, 6, has not been tested yet....but has given me some signs (can't have dairy, had GI probs, gets random hives, immune system not great, a little hyper and carb addicted). A strange thing has been coming up all year. He cannot write sometimes due to his hand "hurting". He just can't get through sentences and I'm wondering if hand pain sounds familiar to...
  16. Would love to hear from other parents on this. I have a little 6 yo guy who hates needles with a passion that is hard to describe! I am on the fence about putting him through testing for Celiac...I was just diagnosed and given what I am seeing with him, I suspect he could be going down same road. He gets hives at random. He cannot tolerate milk so i switched...
  17. Just diagnosed Celiac. Probably had this since childhood....but it really picked up since moving to stressful NYC. Ugh. Good to finally know, but have a multitude of sensitivities right now, plus hashimoto's (doc suspects), candida issues, etc. I'm a mess. Hope to not be soon.

  18. My feeling is that this is WHY our doctors are not being trained or prepared in ANY way for dealing with this silent epidemic. It is because there is not a pill that they can prescribe that is being pushed on them by a shiny happy drug rep. Seriously
  19. Hi, Just recently diagnosed, and would love to hear from others in NYC who have been through this. I've been in NYC for 19 yrs and have dealt with "domino effect" symptoms, as well as straight out Celiac symptoms the entire time
