  1. I see Ore Ida was last discussed in 2010. Just a reminder that SOME of their potato products are not gluten-free. I had the tater tots yesterday morning in a cafeteria (I know, I know...) and I still have the indigestion to prove it. I posted on the Restaurant Forum about the hash browns at IHOP having gluten in them. We often don't think of potato...
  2. I think you're always at risk when you eat out because you never know if the kitchen staff will take the gluten-free protocol seriously. The best thing to do is complain so they understand what went wrong. The waitress I had at PF Chang's had once worked with someone who had Celiac and she was so cautious about my meal that I knew I was in good hands...
  3. Great restaurant with a jazzy feel. They don't have a gluten free menu, but the staff can rattle off the gluten free options for you quickly. They also carry the gluten free soy sauce. The food was excellent and they prepare it separately from the other foods.
  4. I'm about 6mo into gluten-free living. I noticed that if I'm on an empty stomach, and then ingest something that requires a little more work than average, then I have more abdominal pain. (not gluten-caused pain, just a discomfort.) However, if I haven't reached that fasting point, the discomfort is never there. I searched on this forum and see there...

    ARCHIVED IHOP

I noticed someone last posted about IHOP over a year ago and I thought it would be worth keeping a reminder out there. It's easy to get fooled ito thinking if you order hash browns and eggs/omlet and ask for it to be prepared on a clean grill separate from everything else you're safe. (The waitress/waiter will always try to assure you they are actually complying...
  6. I visited a PF Chang's for the first time to try their gluten-free menu. I had the most wonderful waitress who whisked my plate away when she realized they hadn't brought me the gluten-free version of my order. (They'll bring out the gluten-free items on different plates.) I had had only one bite. Since I've been gluten free for about 6 months, I...
  7. "One strange side effect I have noticed is that my skin tone seems brighter-- and my cheeks seem to have a regular flush of color." I read that hyper-pigmentation has been seen in people with Celiac disease. So it is possible that your skin may appear lighter or that you won't get discoloration so easily. Women with Celiac are also more prone to urinary...
  8. I imagine most of us swarm the celiac websites for symptoms we didn't even know we had, so I thought it would be interesting to note some things I've noticed now that I'm on the dawn of my 6mo anniversary: Expected improvements: Better absorption of nutrients (taking less Vit D and iron than initially) Less stomach aches White Blood Cell count improved...
  9. I went to the Roti on 1st St in DC last week. Roti has a very, very good gluten-free pita. As usual, you can taste a little bit of corn flour, but they've got the texture and general taste down to a tee. I bought it frozen and toasted it at home, a measure I took to avoid having them toast it on the same rack as the regular pita. I also asked the employee...
  10. I saw a dietician recommended by my gastroenterologist and was surprised she had carmel color on her list of things to avoid. I noticed quite a bit of debate online about carmel color and that FDA doesn't approve of carmel color made with gluten-containing ingredients, so we should be safe in America. However, there's no doubt that my throat swells whenever...
  11. My immune system is so weak I respond to eggs and dustmites like I have an allergy. (The allergy tests show very, very mild sensitivity, but my body says other wise. Hoping to get well now that I'm focuses on the celiac.) One symptom is hair weakness and thinning. As soon as I cut back my eggs, it goes away.
  12. I will be having oral surgery next month. I'm wondering whether dental hospitals like to be aware that a patient has Celiac in a similar manner that they like to be aware of diabetes, latex allergies, and so on. Celiac/gluten sensitivity hasn't been on any of the questionnaires so far, I'm not sure if that's because the awareness of Celiac is still...
  13. That's too bad, I'm finding it awkward to tell people about gluten-free eating because I can tell some people think it's weird or that a little cake really won't hurt me. Shows like this make it even harder to discuss.
  14. Thanks, I think I'm going to conclude we all must occasionally go through phases of not getting enough nutrients and for those of us that itch, that's just our body's way of alarming us. I took a multivitamin and 4,000u of Vitamin D at different times yesterday and the itching stayed under control much, much better than taking Atarax. Today I've taken...
  15. I was recently diagnosed through lab tests. I've been having a problems with itching (w/o skin conditions) and observed a curious phenomena that I'm wondering if there is already some research available. My itching hasn't responded to over the counter antihistamines and I was given Atarax which basically just seems to reduce the effect, without any real...
  16. " This situation proabably actually has less to do with the parents (and kids) not thinking about your gluten-free diet and more to do with their personal parenting style." Yes I agree. I have since decided to completely put away my favorite gluten-free goodies, since this neighborly family comes over often, and my kids go to their house. I always bring...
  17. I'v been gluten-free for about a month, same time since official diagnosis. I'd give myself an A for sticking to the diet with the only risk of contamination being from a small amount of accidental foods that do not directly contain gluten, but may have been processed on the same equipment as gluten-containing foods. After doing more than my share of...
  18. Thanks, everyone. The caramel color is still an outstanding issue. There seems to be some disagreement, I just know that when I eat caramel color products, I get terrible indigestion and a swollen throat, so quickly that I could easily connect it to caramel color. But on the other hand, I do recall sometimes having a cola and not being bothered and just...
  19. Thanks everyone, some of you have quite a sense of humor. The situation involved having provided designated food to guests (gluten-containing and gluten-free), but then feeling obligated to share gluten-free products that could be seen in the frig, pantry, or in baskets tucked away. Youngsters asked for some. I find it hard to say no, but I know those...
  20. I've asked the Vienna Whole Foods to host a session on gluten-free living, would like to invite others.
  21. I'm new to this and I was recently diagnosed. Like you, I discovered that the gluten-free products can be expensive. I'm a wimp when it comes to cooking, so the ready-made stuff is appealing. When you have company over and they ask to eat your food, is it polite to decline and explain that you want to keep as many gluten-free options around as possible...
  22. I've posted another question here,I'm basically just trying to figure out if I'm in the super sensitive Celiac category, should I act like one for a little while, or if I can relax since this is all so new to me. I had grits this morning from a cafeteria and it occured to me I should see what the gluten-free community says about grits even though it...
  23. I was recently diagnosed with Celiac Disease. I've always gotten a swollen throat when I eat cough drops that contain caramel color, as well as colas and anything else with caramel color. Of course as a newbie and in a rush to relieve cold symptoms, I ate one without looking and paid the consequences. (I've since gotten them out of the house!) I've also...
  24. I posted one message on the Super Sensitive Forum, it seemed polite to post one here too! I am 45 years-old, female, and of mixed-race ancestry. I have been "sick" literally for as long as I can remember. By chance, I stumbled upon a website that mentioned how some people with undiagnosed Celiac Disease have trouble digesting some foods that have no...
  25. After a long, long ~40yr history of symptoms and not having a diagnosis, I am incredibly relieved to have a diagnosis that fits. I stumbled on a website about celiac disease that described some symptoms that sounded eerily familiar. I tried a gluten-free diet for a few weeks and didn't really "feel" anything, but then I ate a cookie--1 cookie--and I was...
