  1. Glad to hear that diet helped someone else too. I agree, it's probably more anxiety than depression, both have been studied in people with Celiac and IBS. I've come to understand that we know very, very little about the brain and psychology, let alone the influence of relationships and diet on the brain or .... hormones! (Which have their own...
  2. I had heard about some people being relieved of depression when going gluten-free and/or fructose-free...I even saw the episode of Mystery Diagnosis where the little boy had seizures from gluten. However, I've never quite heard of anyone having exactly what I used to experience. I thought I'd share this with others on this forum in case it helps someone...
  3. Oh man, that made me laugh so hard!
  4. Yes, I think it's a sign that nutrition should always be a required part of high school health! It's amazing how many people don't really understand food groups, not to mention food sensitivities. A lot of these folks were youngsters. No wonder the country isn't eating right. I also eat at a lot of ethnic food (especially those with curried sauces...
  5. I just reached my 1 year anniversary. I thought I'd share a few funny things that happened. I have teens who were with me on many of these events, so you can imagine the number of times I've reheard the stories with rolls of laughter. 1. Me: Do you have a gluten-free menu? Waitress: No, we don't charge for you to see the menu. 2. Me: Would you...
  6. I'm pretty sure this is the SAME problem I had. I later found out that I'm intolerant to corn. Anything with corn syrup, starch, etc. gives me the same symptoms as gluten. The gastro did tell me that I likely have IBS that is triggered by fructose, so I'm checking into that now. Once I cut corn, I felt SO much better. I sighed to not have the Mcdonalds...
  7. I had a mild amount of bloating that remained after going gluten free. However, after it was clear that I'm corn intolerant too, I stopped eating corn too. I didn't expect it, but that last little bit of bloating has gone away. I also didn't know that I had IBS. So I agree with the other posters, you probably need to check into other intolerances.
  8. I had the same response, less urination urges after coffee. I also used to get urinary tract infections frequently, all gone. I recently had to stop eating corn. I had long associated urinary tract infections with high fructose corn syrup. Interestingly, my gastro just suggested that my corn intolerance isn't really to corn, it's to fructose. I'll...
  9. I was deficient also, but I found that eating mollasses gave me better results than supplements. I'm one of the weird people who actually LIKES mollasses on my pancakes (made with rice flour of course), but I understand some people do well by cooking with mollasses in cookies, baked beans, bbq sauce etc. Or even taking a tbsp a day of it straight. I...
  10. My triglycerides are practically non-existant and I see from a search of the site that others have commented on both low and high results. I hate to ask this question at the risk of sounding whiny over something that most people struggle at the opposite end of the spectrum, but I can't find anything saying whether an extremely low triglyceride level indicates...
  11. I just watched the clip on line and though the 2 ladies with him are African American [and bloated?], I didn't hear him say anything specifically about the liklihood of African Americans having Celiac. It is important for doctors and the general public to realize we live in a society of people with mixed ancestry. About 60-70% of African Americans have...
  12. I literally just started going grain free last week and I used to be a vegetarian. I don't eat a lot of eggs because I get mild, but bothersome skin rashes from them. No allergy ever diagnosed. I tolerate lactose, but still eat/drink lactose-free dairy products just to be safe. It's too soon for me to know whether I need to avoid corn-fed animal products...
  13. I had been trying to catch the episode of Mystery Diagnosis for months now, where a mother with Celiac has a son with seizures and learning delays. They later figure out he had Celiac and the gluten-free diet completely relieved him of his symptoms. It was on Friday. I finally caught it. I never found it online, but if you or a child has neuro symptoms...
  14. The doctor agrees with you that corn will kill me if I keep trying to eat it. Thanks, you encouraged me to get in with the doctor immediately the day you posted. Sometimes the things that are most obvious to us in life are the very things we choose not to see!
  15. This is definitely depressing and I seemed to have been getting so well, then out of the blue these other symptoms come up. The doctor had a corn allergy test done (blood test, not the skin prick), with little expectation that it will prove anything. She agrees with a lot of the literature that corn allergy and intolerance tests are not developed to...
  16. Definitely no quick fix! My doctor said to look at as if you were a burn patient. Severe burns take over a year to heal, plus surgery. Now pretend your gut was in a fire. I hope that gave you a little chuckle. Try and have a good day.
  17. I had the constipation problem too, maybe not as bad, since I'd eventually "go," but bad enough that people would wonder how I could drink so much grape juice, prune juice, and other things and not have loose bowels. Now I know what was wrong. Anyway, my most reliable treatment has been sticking to the gluten-free diet of course, but before this, I always...
  18. I agree with what everyone else here has said, but wanted to add that my dietician encourages lactose-free dairy since I am not lactose intolerant. (Thank God for one good thing.) I have kefir, Cabot cheese, and Lactaid all the time, but again, I am not lactose intolerant. She did mention that people who get easily constipated should avoid dairy all...
  19. I searched 'corn sensitivity' on this site and I see it comes up ALL the time and people have to be reminded that corn sensitivity is definitely not the same as Celiac disease. I had to get into a few debates myself in order to let go that there must be some connection. I made Bob Mill's gluten free cookies the other day and I was unable to move from...
  20. When I first joined this site I mentioned that I had horrible memories of PE and that I was never fit because I'd always get joint pain and muscle fatigue as a kid. It was humiliating and discouraging to hear people complain that I wasn't trying hard enough... worse to say that I "looked" like an athlete or that I looked healthy. So I got Ds in PE for being...
  21. When I wrote in last week to discuss how to respond to rude comments from people who think having Celiac is an advantage to being thin, several people replied in regard to having to manage weight and a couple discussed frustration with doctors who seemed more concerned with having them lose weight than their Celiac symptoms. Here's an interesting interview...
  22. All good responses. I tend not to be a sarcastic person and I'm pretty modest. I'll have to work harder at not being so sensitive! When a person is struggling with their weight and they see a thin person who seems to "have it so easy"...especially if their comments seem riddled with jealousy, they need to be reminded that there is so much more to...
  23. I'm still in my first year and I noticed that even though there is a growing awareness of Celiac disease, there may be some insensitivity to the condition. I am a thin person and by no means do I think there is some advantage to being thin. I'm uncomfortable when people who are heavier than me jokingly act as if I'm lucky to have a condition that has apparently...
  24. I'm going on 8 months and though I've had some improvement, I haven't had as much as you! You are an inspiration! I just posted about getting gluttened from Ore Ida Tater Tots (in a cafeteria of all places) on the food products forum and reading your post has encouraged me to stop taking risks like that, especially as I sit here still feeling the side effects...
