ARCHIVED High Igg But No Issues With Gluten
maitrimama replied to Nebraskamommy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Here is a little blurb from the ACDA - "If a patient’s celiac panel is only positive for antigliadin IgG, this is not highly suggestive for CELIAC DISEASE if the patient has a normal total IgA level, corrected for age. Younger children make less IgA than older children and adults. A markedly elevated antigliadin IgG, such as greater than three to four t... -
ARCHIVED Did Your Ped Gi Recommend Endoscopy And Colonoscopy?
maitrimama replied to Christine0125's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter was older, 15, but based on positive bloodwork and 2 rounds of stool testing they recommended endoscopy and colonoscopy. That was 1 1/2 years ago. The Dx was Celiacs and IBD. She goes back every 3 months and the IBD has been narrowed down to Ulcerative Colitis. -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Candy Cane?
maitrimama replied to AGH2010's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Whole Foods has gluten free candy canes. They also have frozen gluten free pie crusts which make my daughter's favorite pumpkin pie a snap for Turkey Day! -
Dr Hyams was not presented with a diagnosis, he was presented with preliminary test results and then ordered additional tests. No diagnosis was made until all the test results were in and analyzed. It turned out to be a complicated diagnosis and I appreciate his concervative approach. Though my experience with Dr Hyams may be coming from a different side...

I totally disagree, Dr. Jeffrey Hyams and his team at Connecticut Children's Medical Center are fantastic! We are very grateful that he was put in our path and I think I mentioned Dr Hyams by name in a post ~1 year ago. Based on our experience I would recommend Dr Hyams to family and friends of ours. In July of 2011 my teenage daughter (15 at that time...

ARCHIVED Do I Need To Be Dairy Free?
maitrimama replied to thegirlsmom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My 15 yr old daughter was Dx with Celiacs and IBD last September her GI doctor (a well known and respected Pediatric GI) and he and the nutritionist made it clear that all gluten had to be removed from her died but dairy was fine, even encouraged, unless the dairy began to cause problems. That infact she needed the nutrion, calcium and calories, from dairy... -

It is the Paleolithic Diet that I was reading about. It is gluten free and then some. -
ARCHIVED Steroid And Antifungal Cream
maitrimama replied to maitrimama's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I will reread the article and let you know what I figure out. In thinking back it may have said that it is best to be gluten free and remove legumes from your diet as 2 seperate things. Somehow linking the protein in legumes with leaky gut. -
ARCHIVED Steroid And Antifungal Cream
maitrimama replied to maitrimama's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Thx for the info. Don't have to worry about eggs because all of a sudden they taste disgusting to me. I will go ahead and reduce iodine where I can. Since you have been a wealth of knowledge I have another question for you... What is the celiac/gluten free stance on legumes? I have always thought that legumes are a great source of protein and fiber. The... -
ARCHIVED Steroid And Antifungal Cream
maitrimama replied to maitrimama's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Yes, I have been gluten free for almost 3 weeks. An odd thing is that, other than dairy & legumes, protein sources have all begun to taste like yucky fish. I am already worried about the decrease in protein in my diet. Does all dairy have iodine? -
Have had rash since July and GP thought it was shingles. In Sept I we t to dermatologist who barely looked at it and said "dermatitis with some fungal thrown in for good measure. He gave me steroid cream and antifungal cream. The first 2 days the rashes improved then was kind of neutral for a bit. Now the part where the rash has always been is paler pink...

ARCHIVED Section 504 For Your Child
maitrimama replied to maitrimama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
So far everything is going well. My daughter really is a good kid & well liked by teachers and staff. It helps that the middle school (where her sister is) and high school are separate parts of the same building & she has had the same guidance counselor since 7th grade (she is now in 10th). Not only did they agree to universal bathroom pass, seating... -
Does anyone know of a MS Forum that is similar to this one? I figured since they were both autoimmune diseases , and I have already gotten so much good info from all you people, it was worth a shot - thx

ARCHIVED What Are Your Favorite Foods/snacks That You Can Still Eat?
maitrimama replied to maitrimama's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Thx so much for your help! It is my goal this weekend to put together some quick reference cards, including the various gluten-free food symbols for her. I'll laminate them and she can stick them in her wallett! -
Since reading all the struggles people have had with symptoms, testing, diagnosis and I doctors I have realized how lucky we have been. We went from my teenage daughter mentioning that she was having a problem in late July to a diagnosis less than 2 months later! I believe the key component was that her pediatrician ordered the right tests on her first visit...

ARCHIVED Section 504 For Your Child
maitrimama replied to maitrimama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Don't get me wrong, our school is really good but we are dealing with a 15 yr old who is new to this. I don't know any 15 year olds want to be diffrent - even having to raise your hand multiple times on a bad day draws attention, with a universal pass she is seated close to the door and doesn't have to ask. The refrigerator and microwave have insurance libality... -
ARCHIVED Section 504 For Your Child
maitrimama replied to maitrimama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter is 15 and her GI doctor has told us that if the school gives us any problems let him know because usually one phone call from the hospital's lawyer sets them straight! Right now we are looking for things like access to a refrigerator and microwave, a universal bathroom pass (she also has ibd) and the ability to take breaks during standardized... -
ARCHIVED Section 504 For Your Child
maitrimama posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Sorry if I am driving you all nuts with so many questions, you have been a huge help. Has anyone taken advantage of the federal statute section 504 (I may very well have that wording wrong). My 15 yr old daughter's doctor has encouraged us to get it set in place so if she needs it we don't have to scramble. -
ARCHIVED I Have Gone gluten-free W/my 15 Yr Old And I Feel Terrible!
maitrimama replied to maitrimama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It does feel like hypoglycemia that won't let up. Usually a piece of fruit and some cheese helps but not this time. I am usually a pretty healthy eater and suppose I am eating less but that is probably a good thing. Another thing is that is does feel like withdrawal, I am an alcoholic/addict in recovery for quite some time but I do remember this feeling.... -

Thant you so much! I've done some poking around and Lay's chips have gluten free labeling on it's gluten-free products as does Chobani Greek Yogurt. The labeling is very helpful when is out on her own so she doesn't have to read all the ingredients. -
Couple days back I asked about doctors in Hartford at the Connecticut Children's Medical Center, specifically Dr Jeffrey Hyams. So far we like him very much but we are new to this game and my daughter's diagnosis is not a simple one. Let's broaden it a little to Hartford, NW CT (Litchfield County) and SW CT (Fairfield County). My 15 year old daughter's...

I am just a mom trying to help her teenager make this difficult transition. She is 15 and already showing signs of depression since recently being diagnosed with celiac and ibd. I am trying to cheer her up a little (she is starting a therapist) and make her life a little easier. I want to make her a list of foods/snacks that she can still eat from her old... -
ARCHIVED I Have Gone gluten-free W/my 15 Yr Old And I Feel Terrible!
maitrimama replied to maitrimama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thank you very much for the support, it actually made me cry. As a mom I want to protect her but also know life's difficulties are what shape us into caring compassionate people. I still wish it could be me and not her. She's my trooper, first born, wasn't breathing at birth, iugr baby, heart defects, dislocated her elbow when she was 5 and popped it back... -
Thx sooo much WestyDPX and Hopefull1950 for all your well written information. Your organized thoughts have helped me to see the celiac/dh conundrum in a different way. In the end it doesn't matter whether I have a formal diagnosis or not. I have choosen to be gluten free and if that positively effects my life and well being than great!
