  1. I thought I read somewhere that although very rare, false positives do happen? "One negative aspect of the TTG antibody is that it can be falsely positive in a patient who has another autoimmune condition"(Open Original Shared Link) I also read a study as well, but it seemed to focus on children (Open Original Shared Link). My ttg score falls within...
  2. Thanks Navigator. I just hope 5 weeks back on gluten is enough time to show up on the scope/biopsy. I'd hate to go through all of this and then things come back inconclusive or false negative because I was gluten-free only 5 weeks before then. Oh well, I think it's important to try so I'll just bite the bullet. Hopefully I won't get to the point of needing...
  3. So I just got a call that I need to get in for an endoscopy and biopsy asap. I was diagnosed with celiac disease off blood work alone 4 weeks ago, and have been gluten-free ever since. So now I have to go back on gluten (and eat it every single day) so that I have a chance at accurate test results from my procedure which is scheduled for December 20th ...
  4. I agree. I'll just do some sort of elimination diet (soups/foods that are "easy" on my stomach/etc) and then reintroduce dairy after a few weeks. I'll stick to brown rice, cooked vegetables, non-citrus fruit, etc. I'll have to work on how to best get my protein in there. Peanut butter/quinoa/peas... I'll have to get creative (at being tame).
  5. Ya, that's exactly what I was worried about (protein). There must be some obscure way to try something similar which is vegetarian. Perhaps I'll speak to someone today when I go to my natural food store.
  6. Thanks for responding. I don't intend to ever eat meat or meat products again, so I guess GAPS isn't the answer for me. Maybe I'll try a "home-made" elimination diet.
  7. Hi all, I've been gluten-free for almost a month, and have had major stomach issues since then. I feel like things are getting worse as opposed to better. I'm struggling with chronic c and bloating/distention. I tried the usual solutions (high gluten-free fibre, lots of water, etc) but I haven't gotten anywhere. As I inch closer to the one-month mark...
  8. I've had bloating issues for years now. Never knew what it was from. I am very thin, but due to bloating, some days I look pregnant, other days my stomch is flat as a pancake. There are times when my stomach would be so distended I was in agony with killer lower back aches. I honestly thought my skin was going to tear apart! I've been gluten-free for 3 weeks...
  9. ...for now!! New regulations passed by Health Canada will make listing of allergens mandatory on all labels, starting in August 2012. WOOOHOOO!!! From Health Canada: The Food and Drug Regulations require that most pre-packaged foods carry a label and that their ingredients appear in a list in decreasing order of proportion. However, some ingredients...
  10. Thanks for posting Gfresh. I'm a "newbie" so it's interesting to see how different people's recovery times are. Helps manage my expectations I guess. Age diagnosed: 30 gluten-free: 3 weeks % recovered: 0
  11. Congrats!!!! You must be doing all of the right things! I'm sure it's very satisfying to see results - staring at you right on the paper! Now use this as motivation to keep on track!
  12. Just wanting to say thanks for posting this MotoMommy! I was just diagnosed 3 weeks ago and haven't gone dairy free. I've been struggling with the same dilemma so this post was helpful for me too!
  13. Thanks everyone for your responses. Posting on here and getting so much support is so wonderful. @adab8ca: the strange thing is that my doctor (GP) said I would probably feel better in "a couple of weeks" after going Gluten-Free. So the fact that I feel pretty much the same as I did a month ago, is so discouraging. The only way I feel "better" is...
  14. I live in Canada - at first I was happy to hear about this tax break, but now that I read more and more about it, it seems overly complicated and probably wouldn't even end up adding up to very much money back. "Probably not worth it"...indeed.
  15. I searched this forum and read old posts about "how long did it take you to feel better"/etc but I can't help but still vent here. Sorry for anyone who's read posts like these a thousand times. I was diagnosed 3 weeks ago and have been STRICT Gluten-Free since the day I got off the phone with my doctor. Following that, I had a terrible sinus infection...
  16. I'm struggling to find lunch ideas too. I was just diagnosed 3 weeks ago. Right now, my standard work lunches are: -salads -veggies & dip (Gluten-Free of course), plus nuts and yogurt or cottage cheese (for protein) -left overs from dinner (which could be quinoa, etc) -frozen burrito (there's one that's gluten-free, I think the brand is Amy's...
  17. I gave up dairy for a whole 3 days and then gave in. I'm a vegetarian and dairy is a large source of protein for me. Especially since I wasn't able to eat a lot of my "veggie" substitutes I had at home. I've heard from so many places that when you're first diagnosed with celiac disease that you should go dairy free, but I don't entirely understand it....
  18. #1 What did your abdominal pain feel like and where was it primarily located, constant or intermittent? And what % has it improved, if at all after being gluten free, and time frame to get their?? -no pain really...just from stomach distention -I've only been Gluten-Free for 3 weeks. So far, no real noticed improvement. #2 Other symptoms related...
  19. I didn't. I was just diagnosed 3 weeks ago via a blood test. I actually WANTED a biopsy to confirm, but my doctor won't refer me. She said that based on the positive blood test (altough my ttg was only 79) in combination with my other symptoms, she said it was enough for her to be "official". I started Gluten-Free from that day, so at this point I won...
  20. Okay, so I went out today and bought chelated zinc, BioSil (which was sooooo expensive!!!) and primrose oil (which is a pill). They're all pill form actually - I couldn't find anything in liquid form. So hopefully my system will digest it. It'll be a real waste of money if my system can't absorb this stuff. With tax it was close to $125. So how many...
  21. Hi alucard4545! Check out this link from celiac.com: https://www.celiac.com/articles/22704/1/Gluten-free-and-Gluten-safe-Halloween-Candy-2011/Page1.html And this one is actually a database you can search!: Open Original Shared Link Happy Eating! EDIT: Me again, this site has a TON of candy listed: Open Original Shared Link
  22. True. Although I wonder why my iron went down after being on the supplements for 3 months? I'm so desperate to feel normal again and have hair, I may just start taking the supplements now. Like you said, it's got to be better than none. Thanks for the tip on B12, I'll have to look for it at the pharmacy. So much to learn....
  23. Thank you so much for all of your responses. @Karen: Yeah, I guess false positives probably don't happen. It isn't a coincidence that I have so many symptoms and that I'm suffering from such severe malnutrition, even when eating so healthily...and then I come back with a "positive" test result. Thanks for the tip on dietitians. I found out the local...
  24. Thank you! A glimmer of hope! I had my thyroid tested and it's normal. My doctor said she doesn't administer the iron shots. She just wants me to wait until I've been gluten-free for a while and then start taking the supplements again. But it's getting so bad. Everyday I cry getting ready for work. It's terribly embarrassing. I'm going to look up...
  25. In the last 2 years I've lost about 80% of my hair. No bald patches but thinning terribly and breakage everywhere. I can't wear it down, I fear using an elastic, I only air dry it, I use hot oil treatments and all kinds of leave in conditioners. I was sent to a dermatologist who said that since I don't have bald patches there's nothing she can do for me...
