ARCHIVED Weird Cravings After Being Glutened?
printmaker81 replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Here's that recipe. I got it from the Bob's Red Mill website Open Original Shared Link Ingredients: 1/3 cup Canola Oil 2/3 cup Brown Sugar, packed 2 large Eggs 1 tsp. Vanilla 1-3/4 cups Gluten Free All Purpose Baking Flour 2 tsp. Baking Powder 1-1/4 tsp. Cinnamon 1 tsp. Xanthan Gum 1/2 tsp. Salt 1-1/2 cups Banana, mashed 1/2 cup... -
ARCHIVED Weird Question
printmaker81 replied to ShortStuff2309's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Same thing here, too. I think maybe it has something to do with your body trying to get rid of the toxins. That's all I can figure, but I know to stay close to the bathroom -
ARCHIVED Gluten Withdrawal?
printmaker81 replied to carriecraig's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
When I first went gluten-free, I felt good for about a week, then got violently ill. I had low grade nausea and slight dizzyness before my Dx, after that week, I could barely get out of bed without falling on my face and was vomiting some. I had problems with congestion and got a bought of bronchitis that landed me in the hospital. I definitely think all... -
ARCHIVED Weird Cravings After Being Glutened?
printmaker81 replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This is a fun thread! I never ate chips before going gluten-free, now they are my total comfort food. The one thing that makes me feel semi-normal. I'm not supposed to eat soy (haven't pinpointed it as an intolerance, my doctor just told me to stay away). The couple of times I thought I would cheat and sneak a little chocolate, it killed my stomach later... -
ARCHIVED Do You Ever Just Not Care?
printmaker81 replied to Janelson's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Janelson, College age is a rough time to find out you have something like celiac. Not only are you dealing with living on your own and the pressures of school, but my bet is if you're like me, there's not a whole lot of cash coming in and a whole lot going out to doctors and pharmacies and grocery stores. You really have to take a step back sometimes... -
ARCHIVED Neverending Breadcrumbs..
printmaker81 replied to Emme999's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This seems like a good place to voice something that is increasingly more worrysome to me. Right now, I live in Georgia with two other roommates. I was diagnosed back in May, and I have just now gotten the kitchen and the diet under control. However, in a month, I am moving to Michigan to start grad school. It's an art academy, so the kitchens are in... -
ARCHIVED Products Containing Wheat
printmaker81 replied to AnnieMarie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Aussie brand volumizing shampoo and conditioner both have wheat germ and hops in them, but the MEGA shampoo and conditioner are safe. -
ARCHIVED How Did You Tell Your Friends/family?
printmaker81 replied to Suezboss's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The first time I explain it to someone, I break it down as simply as possible. I tell them it is a genetic autoimmune disease. When I eat anything containing the protein found in wheat, barley or rye, my immune system reacts to it as if it were poison. The big problem is that when my immune system goes to attack this protein, it can't tell the difference... -
Hey Dave, welcome to the board. I'm going through the same thing as you. I was diagnosed back in May. I definitely felt worse after going on the diet, particularly my nausea and dizziness. I'm still waiting on a lot of my symptoms to dissappear, but I've stopped losing weight!! Plus, there is a feeling that I am somehow less toxic (though it's hard to...

Like everyone else, I bet it was the fries. I just wanted to add that when you order anything grilled, make sure to ask if the buns are grilled in the same place on the grill as the meat. This could be a source of contamination, too. For my upset stomachs, I have found these Peppermint gels with fennel and ginger that are really soothing and there is...

ARCHIVED Relatives Are Stubborn!
printmaker81 replied to angellove839's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm positive my mother and one of my brothers have it. They have a long list of celiac symptoms. Neither of them will even listen to reasoning that they should get tested. Another of my brothers has no symptoms at all and has already scheduled to get tested in a month. Funny. I'm hoping whatever results Jeff gets will help persuade the other two to get... -
ARCHIVED Question For The Non-celiac Spouses...
printmaker81 replied to frenchiemama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Okay, so I'm not married, but my boyfriend and I eat together enough to sometimes feel like it. It's so hard to cook for one that it almost doesn't feel like it's worth it. Yeah, you can reheat leftovers, but who wants to eat the same thing every day for a week? My boyfriend is super picky (pizza is his main food group) and has stomach problems which... -
I had really dry skin, exema (sp?) and acne... all of which cleared up within a couple of months on the gluten-free diet. Same thing happens to me when I get glutened now. Talk about adding insult to injury!

ARCHIVED Do You Think Of Yourself As A "sick" Person?
printmaker81 replied to frenchiemama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
A few months back, I was looking very much like a heroine addict- skinny, pale, dark circles under my eyes, bad hair and skin. Did I see myself as sick- YES, so did everyone else. Though I still don't feel very good, the circles and skin/hair have started improving (still skinny and pale more anemic looking than addict now). Now whenever I go out, it seems... -
Steadiedwaters~ I can identify with your fear of making a bad first impression. The last thing I want anyone to think of me as is the wierd sick girl (especially since I am still in the healing phase). I'm about to move to a school where I will share a kitchen with 14 other people, so it's a must to say something early. It's not fun, but it's one of...

Lushgreen, I can definitely relate to your problems with fatigue. I had been working two jobs and on top of that exhibiting work. I can't tell you how hard it was to get into the studio or how many times I fell asleep drooling all over my drawings. I couldn't meet gallery deadlines, and even when I did, I wasn't happy with my work...leading to depression...

ARCHIVED Reactions To Distilled Drinks/vinegar?
printmaker81 replied to anerissara's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Anerissara~ I lived in Ireland for awhile, so my preferred drink has been whiskey for quite a while, but the last several months, I just felt super crappy the next day. I'm not a big drinker, so we're talking a drink or two would make my body ache. Wine didn't have the same effect. For the last month or so, I've also been drinking rum or potatoe vodka... -
ARCHIVED Eating The Same Thing, Over And Over
printmaker81 replied to mandigirl1's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know exactly how you feel. I've only been gluten-free for a couple months, so I am probably still looking at some intestinal damage. I was a vegetarian before, so I wasn't used to heavy foods anyway. Now, however, I get hungry again about an hour after I eat. I've just tried to adjust by eating much smaller portions more frequently. I try to keep a... -
Just to add a thought. If you don't want to or can't call ahead, it's best to try to go out before or after the lunch/dinner rushes (i.e. go at 5:00 or 8:00, not 6:30). When a kitchen is slammed, it may be hard for them to get your order straight even if they are really trying to comply with your eating needs. On the flip side, if the kitchen is slower...

ARCHIVED Warning: The Gluten-free Bible
printmaker81 replied to celiac3270's topic in Publications & Publicity
As a newbie, I definitely went straight to the bookstore after being diagnosed, and guess what I picked up...you got it, The Gluten-Free Bible. I read it quickly because it's a pretty quick read. It simplified things and made them digestable at first, and I even recommeded it in the beginning (oops). However, the more I learned from other sources, the... -
I hate that! Just the other day my normally supportive roommate was telling me about how she was being a picky eater among some mutal friends, and someone piped in "Come on now, we're going to start having to call you Heather." She thought it was funny, but it was really one of those comments that I would rather not have known about -Heather

ARCHIVED Getting Loved Ones Tested
printmaker81 replied to printmaker81's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Wow, Michelle, thanks for all those statistics. I had heard that undiagnosed Celiacs were much more likely to develop cancer and was using this to sway my mom. I didn't know that about the menopause -my mom hit menopause a few years early. My mother's big excuse is that she has bad veins and doesn't want to get blood drawn. How lame is that in the... -
ARCHIVED Getting Loved Ones Tested
printmaker81 posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi all, I tried to search for this topic, so I hope I am not reposting. I've seen it come up in other threads, I just thought it might be nice to hear from people who have had success getting their families to get tested. I was diagnosed about two months ago. Though I don't have much extended family, it's not hard to guess where the gene comes from... -
ARCHIVED Gf After 3 Years And Still Not "better"
printmaker81 replied to SJN1279's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Nick, I don't think you necesarily have to be allergic to dairy and soy for them to be hard on your body. My doctor, who is a celiac himself, told me to stay off any dairy or soy for at least a year so my gut could make a complete recovery, even though my blood results were negative for an allergy. Have you had endoscopy to access the damage? Maybe... -
ARCHIVED Severe Mental Symptoms
printmaker81 replied to Magdeliscious's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't mind at all. If anyone else reading this thread has specific questions, they should feel free to email me too. We're all sort of in this together.
