  1. I agree with a lot of what the others said: the wait for the GI felt really long, esp. since we had a positive blood test and kind of knew we would be going gluten-free. But I did want a diagnosis in hand for school/camp/etc. We spent the wait time testing out recipes for things like pizza crust, birthday cake (one of my son's had a birthday right after...
  2. To add to all the good advice from above... We went gluten-free about 2 months ago when my 8-yr-old was diagnosed. One thing that helped us was to get a shopping guide (we got one from Cecelia's Marketplace). The reason I like it is that a lot of "regular" grocery items are gluten-free, so you don't have to spend all of your time (and $) in the specialty...
  3. Thanks for the answers - you all make it sound so doable! I'm teaching a course in Utah, so the boys are driving out from the Midwest to Utah, then we are all going camping for a while in the Rockies and then heading home. It should be fun! I was traveling for work yesterday, and although I brought lunch, I didn't bring dinner, and suddenly it felt like...
  4. We're planning a road trip this summer across the U.S. With a newly diagnosed celiac in the family, suddenly I am at a loss to figure out how we will handle eating out. We are doing great gluten-free at home, but, er, well, how do you do it when you can't cook it yourself? And you can't call ahead to see what's available at the local restaurant... Are...
  5. Thanks for the tip. I don't think I can pick up a copy by Friday, but I can get a copy this weekend.
  6. A 3 month wait is a long time. We only had to wait 6 weeks, and it was ok only because my son didn't really have any symptoms. If he had lost 12 pounds, I'd be really concerned about waiting any longer (that's a lot for a 7 year old). Can they put you on the cancellation list (call you up if someone cancels)? Is there another clinic in a bigger city...
  7. Anyone have a good recipe for a gluten-free carrot cake? or pumpkin cake? or parsnip cake? or anything similar? Thanks!
  8. We cleaned the kitchen top to bottom, and scrubbed out things we've never cleaned before. So far, the only things we got rid of (other than food) were the rubbermaid containers that held my flours for the past 15 years and our wooden rolling pin. We even kept our toaster oven, although it has been cleaned out thoroughly now. Frankly, my kitchen has never...
  9. I think our checklist is the same (except for the "Our Celiac Kids" book, which I hadn't heard of yet). I'm just amazed that step #1 is so hard. We have a diagnosis, with bloodwork and biopsy. It shouldn't be so hard to get it on paper. But the house is cleaned out, the myriad of after-school and in-school programs have been informed, and we will...
  10. Thanks for your reply and your timeline! An hour appt to discuss the next steps sounds like heaven! I actually like my son's primary care physician - he was the one who kept insisting something was wrong with his iron levels and that we did need to keep after it and figure it out. He's the one who referred us to the specialists. It's just so dang hard...
  11. My son was recently diagnosed with celiac with positive bloodwork and biopsy. His biopsy was one month ago. We missed the call from the doctor's office with the test results and ended up hearing the biopsy results from the after-hours nurse over the weekend who basically called to say "he needs to be on a gluten-free diet. The test results were "as expected...
  12. Can you post the recipe that worked? We just started trying to figure out gluten-free baking. I'm using my old breadmaker (Oster), with the Expressbake setting because it only has one knead cycle. I'm on the lookout for good recipes! Thanks!
  13. My 8 year old just had it done. We were actually at the hospital about 6 hours, but it all went fine. They checked him into the Children's Hospital and gave him a room there. Then he went from there down to the surgery waiting area when it was time for his procedure. Same as others mentioned - he got gas to make him drowsy and then the IV went in afterwards...
  14. I looked up that bread recipe and made it last night. I don't think it's going to last longer only because it was so good my kids ate half the loaf for breakfast this morning! Thanks for the tip!
  15. Hi! We're newly gluten-free, too. My son was just diagnosed 2 weeks ago. We decided to switch the whole house gluten-free for now at least until we figure out how to get the hang of this. It has helped me not be paranoid about every little crumb, and now everything in the house is safe for my son to eat. I know everything is gluten-free. I'm experimenting...
  16. We have one other son. We had him tested, and both my husband and I got tested. None of us had high tTG readings at all. I had the gene test run, and it was positive, so we know it came from my side of the family. A few of my relatives are getting tested, too - the ones with symptoms compatible with celiac. Good luck with everything, Melissa! We...
  17. Just figured I'd follow up. He had a biopsy last week and it was positive. We cleaned all the gluten out of the house and went gluten-free a week ago. So far, so good. Thanks for the help. Knowing that the blood tests were pretty accurate for positives gave us 6 weeks to prep our son and get ready for the big gluten-free shift. It went pretty smoothly...
  18. I have seen a lot of people here talking about storing their gluten-free bread in the fridge or freezer. Does gluten-free bread go bad faster? Or are people simply trying to make one loaf last a long time? I usually make bread for my family in a bread machine. Even with gluten, it doesn't last as long as well-preserved store-bought bread, but it would...
  19. Wow - these are great tips. I really appreciate it! You all have a wealth of experience to tap into. The grittiness is what got me about the muffins we made. I guess I can blame the rice flour for that. Otherwise they were ok. Our task for this weekend is to make a yellow cake. I have a 4-yr-old about to turn 5... I have a couple recipes plus...
  20. My 8-yr-old son was diagnosed with celiac via blood test. We will be going gluten-free soon (after next GI appt). We have decided to make the whole kitchen gluten-free, at least initially, so that he will have a safe place where he can eat anything. And we don't have to worry about cross-contamination. I have considered going gluten-free with him...
  21. Thanks! I guess mixes are the way to go initially. I just kind of feel like I went from being a pretty decent baker to being clueless about how different ingredients interact. I'm trying to look at it as a learning opportunity.
  22. My son was just diagnosed with celiac, so we are trying to learn how to bake gluten-free. Most of our dinners are already gluten-free or easy to adjust, but baking is a different matter. So far we've tried pizza crust (with success!), white bread (ok), muffins (kind of ok), and cake (dismal failure). My question is really about what to expect. ...
  23. Thanks for all the responses! You have brought up a lot of good points I hadn't thought of ("gluten police", accidents with condiments, etc.).
  24. We had the other 3 of us tested and none came out positive for celiac (I had an overly high Total IgA, but low TTG IgA - go figure). I know at least one of us must have the genes, but unfortunately they didn't test for that, so we're still left hanging as to which line of the family celiac came from and whether or not we need to keep an eye on our younger...
