  1. Hard-boiled eggs is a great idea. Muffins, too. Considering we are moving for 5 months, I was thinking of actually packing up their lunch boxes and bringing them with me, fully stocked.
  2. I am flying overseas in 2 weeks with my 5-yr-old and 9-yr-old (who has celiac). The flights combined are 16 hours, so I need to bring a lot of food. Any tips or advice? Is it possible to take an ice pack on a flight? Or does that violate TSA regulations? I was planning to bring peanut butter (I found little "to go" packets that are small enough), gluten...
  3. These are good thoughts. We are still pretty new at this (10 months gluten-free now), so I haven't encountered all of the variations on fairness. We made our home gluten-free, so everyone eats the same thing there and it's all safe for my 9-yr-old celiac son. When we go out to eat, we each order what we want, which does mean my 9yr old has more limited...
  4. I would stay on gluten until the biopsy, and then go gluten-free afterwards no matter what the results are. From my understanding, false positives on bloodwork are rare. If the biopsy is positive, then you can get a doctor's official diagnosis which can help in school/camp/college/etc. with accommodations. Six weeks isn't that long, and it will give you...
  5. Good luck with your gluten-free journey! Someone on this board pointed out that the University of Chicago celiac center offers care packages to newly diagnosed celiacs, including kids, for free. We ordered one for my son, and he was so thrilled when it came. In addition to samples, it also had a shopping guide and copies of a few gluten-free/allergen...
  6. We are moving to Spain for 4-5 months this spring, and I have a 9-yr-old who has celiac. We have managed travel around the U.S. thanks to tracking down gluten-free-friendly restaurants on the internet and packing a lot of Udi's bread and PB&J. But I don't know what to look for on labels in Spain. Can anyone recommend a place to go to find a list of...
  7. If you can get a doctor to diagnose without an endoscopy, and his ttg IgA levels come down on a gluten-free diet, then I think you have your answer. Our doctor wouldn't diagnose without the endoscopy, and we wanted a diagnosis for school, etc., so our 8-yr-old had the endoscopy. It was not hard for him. As the other posters note, there are other potential...
  8. My kids took a funny approach to this last night. I have 2 boys, one with celiac and the other without. So the one with celiac systematically traded all of this gluten candy to his brother in exchange for gluten-free options. After 10 minutes of trading and haggling, all the gluten candy was in the non-celiac's bowl and they each had a pile of gluten...
  9. We have one son with celiac, and one who tested negative and has no symptoms. Our GI specifically said that if kid #2 ever starts growing slowly, etc. to insist on having him tested again because of the family history of celiac. Don't let a doctor tell you it's normal. You can develop celiac at any time. You should definitely retest him.
  10. My kids are 5 and 9. Here are some things they like: Tacos, with beans and rice Make your own sushi rolls with whatever he will eat inside (if he'll eat nori) Black beans and rice (we cook up a bunch of veggies, add a little OJ, and then mash it all up with about 1/2 of the beans. The other beans stay whole. The veggies are therefore pureed.) Omelets...
  11. I can't answer your question, but I did want to say "hooray" on the lower ttg #s. It's a lot of work, and you and your son are clearly doing a good job!
  12. I can help with two of these issues! We always mix up a full batch of chocolate chip cookies, drop them in spoonfuls onto a cookie sheet covered with wax paper, and then put them in the freezer. Once the little cookie dough blobs have frozen, you can toss them in a ziplock. Then you just pull out however many cookies you want to bake and bake them (we...
  13. A positive blood test for celiac usually means he has it. From what I hear here, the biopsy is more hit-or-miss (more false negatives). I would go gluten-free after the biopsy no matter what the result and see if his bloodwork goes back to normal on a gluten-free diet. My son had no outward symptoms at all. We only found out he had celiac because...
  14. In Duluth, we've had good gluten-free food at the Duluth grill and At Sara's Table/Chester Creek Cafe.
  15. We don't send a mat, but my son has a bento-box style lunchbox. So he opens it up, takes the lid off of containers, and it's kind of a like a plate with different foods all laid out. He has instructions not to take things out of the lunch box and put them on the table. I have no idea if he follows that request or not, but he can always just eat straight...
  16. When my son was scoped, the doctor wasn't willing to say yes or no, but he did indicate that he saw some lines(?) that are common in celiac patients... but that we had to wait until the samples were examined, etc. etc. Regarding weight gain, my son started gaining weight within a few weeks after we switched him to gluten-free. In the first 6 months...
  17. We can't really tell if he's been glutened, to be honest. We asked him to let us know if his stomach ever hurt. He mentioned it a few times - only once did we think it might have been gluten (after a big family dinner at a relative's house). I had the same feeling you did though, that we didn't know if we were doing it right or not. We just retested his...
  18. I wanted to add one more thing. My son really loved the book "The gluten-free Kid: A Celiac Survival Guide". It acknowledges that celiac is a serious disease, but that you can live with it and be a normal kid at the same time. Somehow it hit home with him - we read it over and over and over.
  19. Hang in there! You are where we were about 6 months ago, when my then 8 year old was diagnosed. His only symptom was anemia, so he, too, felt fine and finding out he had celiac was kind of a fluke. We ended up making the whole house gluten-free. I decided that would be easier than dealing with obsessive cleaning and crumb paranoia, and it also provides...
  20. I'm hoping more people respond to this one. We're headed to the MN State Fair next weekend with our newly diagnosed 9-yr-old (who LOVES the corn, but I'm hoping there's more). Does Northland Celiacs have a booth at the Fair? Or is the list on-line somewhere?
  21. My son was diagnosed 6 months ago and his ONLY symptom was low iron. No intestinal problems, no joint pain, nothing. I would definitely have your doctor run a celiac panel. Joint pain is a common symptom, too.
  22. I just wanted to share with people who would understand how excited I am... My 9 year old son was diagnosed with celiac 6 months ago. At that time his ttg level was >100 (with >4 being positive). He's been gluten-free now for 6 months, and a recheck of his ttg levels show that they are back to normal (3)! I'm thrilled and feel so proud of...
  23. My son has essentially no visible symptoms, so we have no idea when he's been glutened. He was anemic, which led to the celiac test (positive) and biopsy (positive), so we know he has celiac. If your daughter had a positive blood test and a positive biopsy, she has celiac. She just may not react visibly. It's both a blessing (no sick kids!) and a curse...
  24. I got excited about the possibility of nacho cheese Doritos in our family's future, but the Frito-lay site still says that Nacho cheese (in all sizes) are not gluten-free. Bummer. The baked nacho cheese Doritos are gluten-free, as are many other flavors. Maybe they are transitioning over - ?
  25. At 15 mo, it shouldn't be too hard to travel gluten-free. We just got back from our first road trip with our newly diagnosed 8-yr-old. For eating out, we either stopped at a grocery store and picked up food or ate at Wendy's (baked potatoes, chili, salad). We checked cities we were going through ahead of time to find restaurants with gluten-free options...
