  1. Chex makes great gluten free oatmeal that I love more than regular oatmeal - have a couple different flavors. I'd suggest giving it a try!
  2. I'm glad that someone brought this up because I sometimes get these "heart attack" symptoms too - I just turned 30 so I shouldn't be having any problems with my heart. When I have my "episodes" (which have become MUCH less frequent since being diagnosed with Celiac), it hurts so bad that I actually think, "well, this may be how I die..." In fact, it landed...
  3. Popcorn Indiana is fantastic and I've also really begun to like the Skinny Pop (in the bag) - all natural with a bit of salt for flavor - so good!!! I never usually have a problem with popcorn..
  4. I dunno, maybe I'm weird or something, but I don't hesitate to tell anyone why I can't eat their food. I'll say, "No thanks, unfortunately that type of food will make me sick." Of course it leads into other questions, but I'm not embarrassed or ashamed (I'm not suggesting that the OP or any of us are) and frankly I take every opportunity to educate someone...
  5. Oh I've had those dreams....I had a terrible nightmare where I picked up a big slice of pizza and shoved it in my mouth....then I "remembered" that I had Celiac and I began to cry and panic... I explained to my friend the next day that most people would consider a dream about eating pizza a very good one - its funny to me that its probably our worst nightmare...
  6. Welcome to the forum! You will get a ton of great advice on here - so many people are willing to help and share their experiences....it also may make you happy to know that going gluten free to help heal your system may also help with your fertility. A common symptom of untreated Celiac is infertility and you will see a lot of people on here had much more...
  7. Arlene is right, this is most definitely a grieving process because not only are we giving up the food we love, but also certain social situations, events, and maybe even people that just dont quite understand what we go through. This disease is a life changer for sure - there is no pill to swallow to make things better. Speaking from personal experience...
  8. So sorry that you've gone through this much! It definitely sounds like you've been through a lot and so many people on this forum feel your pain. As far as the endoscopy goes, just as Belle said, its simple and there is no pain involved whatsoever. You don't even realize that it was done - I've had two and I would take that ANY DAY over another colonoscopy...
  9. From my understanding, gluten can also be related to depression due to nutritional deficiencies. If we are Celiac or NCGI and have problems absorbing nutrients, then we may not be getting the B vitamins the way we should be. B vitamins are essential for brain and nerve functioning, and if the body is deficient in these vitamins, then the serotonin levels...
  10. I LOVE my GI doctor - he's in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey. Not too far of a drive from NYC, maybe like 20-30 mins away? He tested me for Celiac before I even knew what Celiac was and I only reported minimal symptoms. His name is Dr. Gillin and I've included the website for the practice below. The campus is huge and practice includes any kind of doctor...
  11. I definitely bloat quite a bit when I get glutened - my family also says that I look pregnant... After this happens and I lay on my belly, it feels like I'm laying on rocks and its terribly uncomfortable. Your intestines need time to calm down and decrease the swelling after being glutened, so I'm not surprised that you're still experiencing the bloated...
  12. Tami, I have the EXACT same problem as you - I have always hated veggies (I blame my mom for not making me try different kinds when I was younger). I have a huge texture problem with them and always gag if they're cooked or mushy. On top of that, my texture issue also prevents me from being able to eat most fruits without gagging uncontrollably. Obviously...
  13. I actually am leaning the other direction and think it may be something else - you said that you had a low grade fever which is more likely a sign of an infection of some kind rather than a glutening. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't heard of anyone reporting a fever as a symptom of glutening. It sounds like you could have had minor...
  14. Welcome to the forum!!! I have been gluten free for about a year and three months now after my diagnosis and it is a long road but it is a worthwhile one. I was diagnosed in May of 2012 via blood work and endoscopy - then I had repeated blood work in November of 2012 to see my progress after 6 months. My TTG level went from over 100 to about 20, and by...
  15. Hi Erik! The ship we were on was the Celebrity Equinox - it stays mostly in Europe but it does some Caribbean tours too. What did you mean when you said that you wished all meals were available, including lunch? They didn't have lunch for you on your cruise??? I didn't have a problem with any meal and they always had gluten free bread and options available...
  16. Hello everyone! I haven't been active in a while - very busy with my wedding plans, school, etc. Now that it's all done I wanted to share my surprisingly fantastic experience on a Celebrity Cruise. For our honeymoon, we booked a cruise through Celebrity for 12 nights in the Mediterranean (Italy, Greece, Turkey, Malta, Spain, etc). Needless to say...
  17. Not sure when your trip is or if its already happened yet, but I live about 10 mins away from Newark Airport. Dont bother with Whole Foods - its way over priced around here. My best suggestion is this: There is a Shop RIte in Clark, NJ on Central Ave that has the biggest selection of GOOD gluten free foods that I have ever seen - an entire frozen foods...
  18. It takes about an hour and a half and 4 cell phone alarms to get me up in the morning (my fiance isn't too happy with that either haha). I need to wait about 20 minutes after waking up before I get in the shower so that I don't trigger a syncope episode (I'm assuming I have to wait until my blood pressure rises enough before getting in the shower or else...
  19. I also have a nickel allergy and used to get a terrible itching, oozing rash on my stomach where my belt came in contact with my skin - I went to an allergist several months back and he explained to me that many people have a topical nickel allergy and cant wear items (jewelry, belts, etc) that contain nickel, however out of those people, there is a very...
  20. I agree with the other responses with missing the convenience of a non-gluten free lifestyle. I work full time (9-5) and then am in nursing school from 6-10:30pm, so I'm carrying around a huge bag of food with me everyday (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks) which is nowhere near convenient. I miss the freedom of walking down to the school's coffee shop...
  21. My symptoms include bloating, either constipation or D, extreme fatigue, and lots of joint pain. Drink lots of water, eat rice (or other dry, bland food), and I agree with the heating pad - always helps relieve the cramping type pain for me. Digestive enzymes and probiotics will help heal your gut and will help with the infamation - its probably best to...
  22. If you have a smartphone (Iphone or Android) they have these really great gluten free apps that help you with researching ingredients or places to eat. I use Gluten Free Registry (its free) and you put in your current location (or location that you wish to dine in) and it will pull up all the places in the area with gluten free menus, plus reviews of how...
  23. After going gluten free, I noticed that my PMS and period symptoms became much worse too - once I even called the GYN to ask for a pain medication because Midol (my usual go-to for period pains) wasn't even making a dent anymore. I was surprised when she switched my birth control medication to something else - I thought, "yeah ok, this wont work but I'll...
  24. Definitely check all the lotions and toothpaste as well - Colgate regular paste is gluten free...not sure if this applies to her or not but Play-Doh also contains gluten (I was surprised when I found that out too) and is made from wheat flour - so if she plays with it, then you'd need to remove that as well. (I'm a child therapist and can no longer use Play...
