  1. Every school we've been involved in does a lot with food. We've been dealing with this problem for years -- our older son has food allergies and could potentially have a fatal reaction if he gets exposed (forget being sick for several days... this is pretty scary). It's not just school, it's also church -- snacks in Sunday school, etc. Everywhere we go...
  2. Thank you for your thoughts. My son has never exhibited any symptoms of autism -- classic or Aspergers. He's hit all his milestones so far. (I have read that celiac can manifest itself as symptoms of autism, so thank you for pointing that out.) I had him assessed by a counselor from our school and she says the only thing she can tell that is causing...
  3. Great pointers. Thanks for going to the trouble to research them. I looked at all of them. When referring to stunted growth, most of what I read said things like "may stunt growth" or "can stunt growth". None of them said that celiac disease in children WILL PERMANENTLY STUNT growth. So there is definitely a possibility of stunted growth (because of...
  4. Our son's skin got better briefly too, then got bad again. I am hitting my head against the wall, have checked everything he ingests. Our doctor said it will just take awhile for his skin to heal (6 months or more). But poor little buddy! He looks AWFUL today. I have to say his skin seems to get worse when there is more ragweed in the air (and it's at...
  5. It would be nice if you (or anyone) could provide a pointer to some research that backs up these beliefs. I would very much appreciate some scientific information about this -- whether it's good news or not. Sure, it makes sense that being malnourished the first 3 years of life could have an effect. But do you know that for a fact -- being malnourished...
  6. Wow. Interesting. How long do you think your son had been dealing with the celiac problem before it was diagnosed? This is all giving me some hope. I know my son isn't going to be a very tall person anyway, given our genes. I just didn't want the celiac disease to permanently cause damage. Carrie
  7. It is so hard to know whether the gluten-free diet is respondible for the growth spurt or not. I would like to think it was. Thank you for letting me know your experience. It sounds like your son had celiac for awhile before being diagnosed. I'm glad we're not the only one... we've been going to doctors for years about his worsening eczema with no resolution...
  8. I'll have to check out the Kids with Celiac Disease book. We will talk to the gastro doctor about the growth issues when we have the appointment. It is so ironic. All these years we have been feeding our kids so HEALTHY. We don't do junk food unless it's literally our last option. My kids eat healthier than most children. Their babysitters are always...
  9. We will hold him back if that's the right thing to do at the end of this year. We had him evaluated by a professional yesterday and she noted that he has hit all his milestones except for the physical development. He's been asking to have some of his new friends from kindergarten over to our house, so he's sociable with them. We've got the entire year...
  10. celiac3270, Were you a very small child all your life? How long did you have celiac disease before it was diagnosed? After you went gluten-free, how long did it take before you started growing? My 5-year-old son has the size of a 3-year-old... he's 41 inches and 36 pounds. Now that we're connecting dots, we've realized he's been on the low end of...
  11. Hi... please excuse this anxious post, but I've become a bit worried. My son was diagnosed at age 5 with celiac disease. We've kept him gluten-free since mid-July. His mood and energy are great now. His skin looks a little better. My husband and I are just starting to "wake up" to the fact that he may have been suffering from celiac disease for a...
  12. We have the little guy on so many different antihistamines. He is a walking antihistamine. He loves the chewable benedryl, but has been able to swallow the pills since age 4. He's also been on Zyrtec, Claritin, Allegra and others I can't remember. Some of them seem to take a little of the edge off, but they never stop the itching. I think he's in a viscious...
  13. My son is allergic to peanuts and now there are so many products that say, "may contain peanuts". There didn't used to be... this has happened in the last couple of years. The lawyers are getting involved. This trend will continue, I assure you. We usually take our chances when the product says, "manufactured with other peanut-containing products) and...
  14. SueC, Thank so much for the info. Interesting that he might be allergic to the antibiotic! He itches and scratches a lot anyway, but started doing it much more two nights ago. Ragweed is starting to be high, so that might have something to do with it. --CarrieLynn
  15. Our son tested positive for celiac and has been gluten-free since mid July. We think he has the DH version because he was breaking out with little sores on his skin and those are gone. But he still has red and inflamed and itchy skin. My husband took him to the doctor's office because of swollen lymph nodes and the doctor thinks our son has a skin infection...

    ARCHIVED Dh

Did you itching subside after going gluten-free? My 5-year old son scratches like crazy -- everywhere. He's been gluten-free (to the best of our knowledge) for 7 weeks and he's still scratching constantly. I contacted the doctor and he said it could take months for his skin to heal. We keep hoping for a miracle with his skin here, but it hasn't happened...
  17. I guess this is another reason why I am frustrated with this teacher. The school can assist us in assessing whether he needs OT. She told us he's having problems writing and kept referring to fine motor skills. If this is really a problem, then we need to know that and get additional help! I sat with him today and he wrote the entire alphabet and seemed...
  18. I really appreciate your telling me about the teacher's viewpoint because it is definitely something I like to keep in mind. I am always trying to put myself in other people's shoes. (I've done some teaching myself and am currently doing volunteer work in support of K-12 education at the university level.) And I know that this class size has exceeded the...
  19. Thank you for these thoughts. We have had our son tested for celiac disease and he did test positive. His symptoms are skin-related. He was not diagnosed as having the dermatitis herpetiformis version of celiac, but I believe that's what it is after looking at pictures of it. But the blood tests are definitely positive for celiac. He does not have the...
  20. I just want to tell you how much I appreciate that you took the time to respond. Thank you very much. --Carrie
  21. Please read my further posts you'll see that I don't have a problem with him repeating kindergarten. And no-one here has ruffled my feathers. I'm angry at how the teacher is handling this situation, so she's the one ruffling my feathers. I do have a problem with the teacher asking me to remove him from kindergarten and put him in a 4-year-old program...
  22. Yes, EXACTLY!!! Thank you! What is kindergarten for? The teacher kept telling us that his fine motor skills were lacking because he doesn't hold a marker right. Well, isn't her job to teach him how to do that? He just hasn't had any practice in holding a marker or pencil correctly... it's not that he can't do it. (And we weren't aware until now that...
  23. If we have to hold him back, we will. However, he has had 5 total days with this teacher (he's been sick some and there was also a substitute teacher for several days), so I don't think she's had enough time to assess him, or give him a chance. I'm not ready to throw in the towel immediately after school has started and just accept that he'll repeat kindergarten...
  24. My 5 year old son was diagnosed with celiac about 6 weeks ago and he's been gluten free since then (to the best of our knowledge). His mood and energy have improved, but his skin still looks pretty bad. (I believe he has the DH form of celiac... his symptoms were not gastrointestinal. He was not officially diagnosed with DH, but I'm pretty sure that's what...
