ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
Sammykins replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I've actually seen more 'may be contaminated' polenta than gluten free polenta. It's mind-boggling. Woolworths is a big offender. Stacks of their Macro range health food items may contain gluten when they need not, and they're gluten free staples like polenta and buckwheat groats (last time I checked these had a disclaimer). I buy The Market Grocer brand... -
If you want something higher intensity without the impact, look up deep water running also known as aqua jogging. Performed correctly with a high cadence it is an excellent workout. Bonus: you get to look really cool with a giant floaty around you waist.

I wasn't able to get to the expo due to a family emergency, but my husband dropped by for the last 30 minutes as he was working nearby. I've heard that it's best to get to the expo early if you want to get samples and to ensure you can buy whatever discounted items you're after before they sell out. Sure enough, when he got there a lot of places had or... -

ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)

I confess that I have had the gluten free weet-bix for breakfast and (part of) lunch today. It's really rather tasty! It's a bit darker than regular weet-bix and I think more wholesome tasting and filling? I haven't had weet-bix in about decade though, and was a hungry teenager at the time. I found it in the cereal island with the regular weet-bix. I guess... -

A few things I've noticed in the shops recently: Woolworths: now stocks fresh (not frozen) Zehnder bread. I've only seen the white rice bread so far. For those unfamiliar with the brand, it has the distinction of being a full sized loaf. Open Original Shared Link Coles: now stocking Genius brand double chocolate muffins and pitta bread, both in the freezer... -

Woo hoo! The burritos you were talking about Saz appeared in our freezer section today so hopefully the Geniu$ crumpet$ are on their way! The new Genius puff pastry was there too (the one that the rep said actually does puff but the proof will be in the, errr, pie. I am doubtful). Yeah, our Coles have the vego stuff right next to the gluten free frozen... -

I think my local Coles is getting rid of my beloved Genius bread and/or the entire Genius range. For about a month they've had things marked as Buy 1 Get 1 Free and now there are Reduced to Clear labels. I am quite disappointed with this. I know they have a lot of different brands now, the amount of gluten-free bread on offer has exploded, but darn it it... -

I haven't tried them Saz, but since you mentioned frozen ready-meals, I've spotted a newish brand in my Coles called "SuperNature Super Foods". The Mediterranean Polenta and Thai Beef with Quinoa & Brown Rice are gluten free. Open Original Shared Link There's also Coles Simply Gluten Free apple pies, but will they stack up to the Bellyhoo ones that... -
BREATHE. Here's the thing: our bodies are incredibly smart and resourceful. After a period a semi-starvation, the body preferentially gains fat instead of muscle in order to protect itself from a future 'famine'. It doesn't know that the famine is over, just that if it hits again it is easier to live off fat than cannibalize your muscle stores. Not only...

ARCHIVED Non-Diabetic Reactive Hypo
Sammykins replied to robinamicrowave's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi there, I too have reactive (postprandial) hypoglycemia, and have also had serious episodes where I've blacked out and had massive convulsions. Have you been diagnosed by a doctor? It is very important to have it properly diagnosed, as it can be caused by tumor (insulinoma) or be something like Addison's Disease. Assuming you have been diagnosed with... -

I like to think that they haven't labeled things because their ingredients might change or they want you to tell them so they're more careful? In any case, staff should know/ask without the eye rolls. Do they do this to people with peanut allergies? No, didn't think so. It frustrates me, too. In a couple of restaurants where there's been statements like... -

I just tried one of the BFree gluten-free wraps which are new to Woolworths. HOLY HELL. If you see them, be sure to nab a package even if you've been put off by all the gluten-free cardboard wraps. I've only spotted them in a couple of stores and even then, supply seems to be patchy. I think I know why! Highlights: - Wholegrain gluten-free flours are high... -
ARCHIVED Anyone With Ncgs & Ibs-C? How Are You Coping?
Sammykins replied to spirit22's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I think what happens is that doctors these days are so used to seeing people who have constipation due to a poor quality diet (highly processed, low fibre, little fruit and vegetables) and a sedentary lifestyle. For these people, generic, simple-to-understand information does the trick. We however have more complicated digestive systems. When I first saw...- 16 replies

ARCHIVED Anyone With Ncgs & Ibs-C? How Are You Coping?
Sammykins replied to spirit22's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
That's certainly the case for most people, but interestingly, some people with IBS/NCGS do better with soluable vs insoluble fibre. It's a matter of working out what's best for you! I find certified gluten-free oats are really good. If I go too long without them, things get worse for me. Dried fruit is another good source of fibre, especially prunes (dried...- 16 replies

ARCHIVED Protein To Pack That I Can Get Through Customs From International Travel?
Sammykins replied to esgal's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm thinking baked beans might be an option? Either in a ring-pull can, if you can take those (I though they would be banned due to safety risks, sharp metal and all) or those plastic pre-packaged tubs. -

Thanks for the heads up, Saz. There are some good looking things in that range! Also discovered at Woolies recently, a new brand (sorry, didn't take a note of it) of SOFT, PLIABLE WRAPS. I haven't tried them, so they may taste awful as far as I know, but I was seriously amazed at how soft and pliable they were. No breakages when folded over in the packaging... -

Yeah, I found the Livwell crumpets disappointing. I was a crumpet afficionado pre-gluten-free. It's funny you should mention Genius' quality control - the reason why I was speaking with the rep was because one of the seeded loaves I had bought did not have any seeds!! -
ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
Sammykins replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Nope, didn't even see them?! I had some Purebred ones. I spoke to a rep from Genius gluten-free a couple of weeks ago. They are bringing out puff pastry that the rep says actually puffs! And, joy of joys, CRUMPETS! (I'm still trying to find a good crumpet replacement). They are bringing out some other pastry items too. -

Day 2 of our Perth trip and I have already been glutened at a winery lunch despite several assurances by staff. Had to miss out on the later tastings when the stabbing pains kicked in. Still feel like %#$&@. UGH. Have had good experiences elsewhere though. At Voyager Estate they put together a gluten free tasting plate for us which was delish. It's... -
ARCHIVED Terrible Concentration As A Symptom Of Glutening?
Sammykins replied to KCG91's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep! With a severe glutening I have trouble concentrating, including following conversations, and have trouble finding words. It is as if I have lost my vocabulary. I hope you feel better soon. Good luck with your race! -

Snap decision to travel to Perth! Is anyone here from Perth or traveled there recently? I am after some recommendations for places to eat that offer gluten-free food and preferably also understand gluten-free meal preparation. I am very inexperienced with asking about the preparation side of things, especially on the spot. The Coeliac WA website has surprisingly...
