  1. CoconutKris, I am new to Celiac as well. I had never heard of it before, didn't even know gluten could hurt you or really what it was. I've only been gluten free for not quite 2 months. I'm really struggling with the adjustment because 1. I was a total bread and carb junkie, 2. my relationship to food has been thrown completely out of whack, 3. Have no idea...
  2. Has anyone seen/heard of this? It is set to be released sometime in August of 2014. If it works, sign me up!! Open Original Shared Link
  3. Adalaide, if you go to kitchenaid's website under Shop, and you look up the details of the grain mill, under the Warranty tab there is a .PDF file for care and maintenance and it shows how to take the grain mill apart and what the parts look like. It looks like a nifty little attachment! I'm looking forward to getting my mom's care package, as this will be...
  4. JustCricket - I loved your post..."hit it with everything!" That made me smile. I know that my mother hasn't used it in a number of years, and before agreeing to send it to me, she took it to the repair shop to have it looked at and they said it's in good shape. Knowing my mother, she's cleaned the heck out of it, and has kept it well maintained all these...
  5. My mother has generously decided to send me her old Kitchen Aid mixer, as she hasn't used it in many years. She is sending me several of the attachments including the dough hook, the mixing blade, and the grain mill. Although it has been used many times with regular wheat-containing ingredients, she has decided to send it anyway, saying that she soaked...
  6. Great. Thanks. I'll re-read the newbie thread. Can you please post a link to the newbie thread?
  7. You just sparked another question - does this mean I have to replace all my pots, pans, utensils and everything that may have touched gluten? Even if they've gone through the dishwasher or I've thoroughly washed them by hand?
  8. Bartfull, you make an excellent point and you're 1,000% right. And I feel more than ever that I don't want to go. :-(
  9. Thanks Bartfull and JustCricket. I actually just texted one of my family members about her signature dish - her yams. This is holiday lore in our family - I adore her yams so much (and we joke that she cancels out any nutrients with all the butter and sugar) that she actually makes me my OWN pan of yams. I asked what was in them, saying I was just checking...
  10. This is my 1st holiday season with my celiac diagnoses. I have family that lives about 45 minutes away that I spend at least Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter with. They always do all the cooking (my house is too small to host, and at least one family member is allergic to cats, of which I have many) and I bring their favorite and most requested appetizers...
  11. I am really starting to love this board and the people on it! gluten-free in DC - your comment above your "picture" made me laugh out loud! Gemini, we seem to have a scary amount in common. Honestly, the first thing I thought of when you said you were in Cambridge, Mass is "OH! Did you go see Stephen King when he was there in September?" Totally off...
  12. Gemini, you're right, I don't think any of my meds work like they should since I haven't really been absorbing them properly. I expect that all of them will need to be adjusted/reduced several times as I heal. I just had my doc lower my Armour to 150mg from 180, and I'm sure in the next few months they'll lower it again. The lab forgot to run the Reverse...
  13. I am continually surprised at the quantity and quality of the amazing responses from ya'll. Thank you again! Gemini, I agree, my 1st post was very intense. But it was also accurate. My emotions have always been very intense, but most of the time appropriate to the situation. Lately I'm responding stronger and inappropriately to the situation, something...
  14. LOL!! I'm not from Jerzey, but I went to high school in Connecticut, close to New York. I still have close friends from there and sometimes their culture rubs off on me. ;-)
  15. Thanks all, for your comments and support. Gemini, my apologies if I offended you. I didn't mean to, I'm just still so surprised how yucky some of the gluten free stuff is that has been highly recommended to me. There really are some yummy gluten free items out there, and some have completely shocked me at how good they are! I'm thinking of Glutino's gluten...
  16. Grumpy by nature...I love it! That sounds like me. :-) I've adhered strictly to the gluten free diet since being diagnosed. I realize that I have to do it. No one said I have to like it or be happy about it, but I DO have to do it, so I am. And to Winter Song, I agree with you that being angry takes a lot of energy. I'm half Sicilian, so it's in my nature...
  17. I was diagnosed with Celiac on October 1st, so I've been gluten-free for 44 days now. At my 6 week follow up with my Naturopath on Tuesday, I told her that: A. I don't feel any different or better after 6 weeks off gluten. B. I haven't lost any weight. C. My depression seems to be getting worse, and mostly, I am majorly PISSED OFF. People close...
  18. Hello all! I'm a newly diagnosed Celiac, and have been gluten free for a whopping 18 days! I have been happily surprised at all the gluten free options I'm finding, particularly since I am a substitution focused person, rather than an eliminating foods person. I'm curious and looking forward to trying all sorts of new gluten free options, from tortillas...
  19. Hi all! I'm on day 10 of my new gluten-free lifestyle (except for last Saturday night, my goodbye to gluten meal!) and I'm doing ok, after restocking my pantry with all gluten-free foods and ingredients. I didn't throw out my microwave popcorn though, I checked a few gluten-free websites and they all said the brands I have are gluten-free. The last...
  20. Thank you all for the great responses! Please keep them coming! I have the gene from both parents for celiac, so I was probably born with it. Both sides also have thyroid issues, my dad had Grave's disease, so I made the obvious assumption I got that from them, but no one ever mentoned celiac in my family before. I thought I might have the silent type...
  21. Hi all, I was just diagnosed on Monday with celiac disease. I was worried I'd have to go gluten-free because of my Hashimoto's and my naturopathic doc mentioned that might be the way to go. Now it looks like I have no choice. I have been a bread/carb/pasta/baked good junkie my whole life so I'm looking at a huge (and rather overwhelming) lifestyle change...
  22. Thank you Kareng! This is all new to me. I have all the ingredients ready for my stew, I just need to swap out the regular flour for gluten free. I'm keeping your recipe for the next time I make stew - it looks delicious!
  23. Sorry to sound like a dolt, but I'm just not sure about this dry onion soup mix. I have a package of Lipton Recipe Secrets onion soup mix (dark blue writing on the white envelope) and I threw the box away. The lipton website says it does have barley, but some posters on here say if it does have gluten, it's not enough to worry about. I was just diagnosed...
