Celiac.com - Celiac Disease & Gluten-Free Diet Support Since 1995

  1. That toast statement reminds me, hospitals used to give a "BRAT" diet to patients with chronic diarrhea. It stands for Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast". Talk about feeding the fire. Toast? for diarrhea. How many of those patients actually had celiac/gluten sensitivity?
  2. Which scan did you have? I know of a couple women who had the heel scan come back normal but the hip and back scan were really off (bad). They insisted on it because they didn't believe the heel one. Do you have a copy of your scan? How many times does the doctor say the tests are normal but when you get a copy and look at it, the numbers are either on...
  3. Was wondering if anybody has a good recipe for a roll up dough like the Pillsbury Crescents in a can. Need something thin just like when you roll them out of the can. Need to put ingredients in the middle like a calzone. Should be flavorful enough to eat plain not just considered a wrapper. Thanks for your help.
  4. That sounds like great advice for anybody looking at this site and coming up negative in terms of blood work. Enterolab is IMHO saving lives everyday with their methods. More so than the typical GPs who dismiss celiac disease/gluten sensitivity so quickly. They need to LISTEN to their patients more.
  5. Sorry to hear about your lack of support. This disease needs all the support it can get because it is so awful. Have you had your vitamin levels checked? This diet can be lacking in some things so perhaps that is part of the problem that would be easy to fix. Have your vit. D level checked for the bone pain. Are you getting calcium? Sunlight? It sounds...
  6. Someone wrote a message earlier about Progresso, but check the label of course.
  7. Do you take vitamins? That could cause bright yellow, as does concentrated urine from lack of enough fluids. Other causes but we won't go there yet.
  8. Funny, a severe kidney infection was the first illness I could actually remember (I was 4 or 5). Every kidney infection and/or pain since has been linked by doctors to that early infection. All other tests ruled out kidney problems, but strange to see a celiac link. It is an ongoing problem but not so much now that I'm gluten free. My sister with celiac...
  9. When I was a teenager, I was diagnosed with severe anemia. After four kids, I was still anemic and told that they were the cause. Years ago, had some nail changes (clubbing, curving, color changes). The dermatologist ran a ferritin level and it came back 4 (I think she said normal is 20-100). She put me on feosol 2 x a day and rechecked. It came up to...

How many loved ones have to get sick and die before doctors listen? Your story is unfortunately a very common one here where I live. Are we getting sicker because celiacs are marrying gluten sensitives and vice versa? Has this thing been in the making for generations? Some of the things that have worked for me and my friends and family are: massage...
  11. Anything is possible. You could also have IBS in addition to celiac/gluten sensitivity. Why couldn't you have both? Celiac presents in so many different ways--that is why it is so mis/underdiagnosed. Go gluten-free after you send in your specimen, then you'll feel better.
  12. Boy, I wish you could add the gene test because it is so worthwhile. Even after being diagnosed via biopsy, I still thought in the back of my mind that maybe everything was due to something else. One doctor would say celiac, the next would say, I'm not thin enough. The next would say celiac, the one that did the positive biopsy said the biopsies were probably...
  13. My family and I have had hives off and on all our lives. Told it was a reaction to medicine, reaction to poison ivy, reaction to soap. . . Mine is typically on my face and neck/chest when I get glutened. My daughter gets it on her knees and hands. My other daughter gets it on her forehead. Sometimes it is just on our stomach. It really doesn't have...
  14. Which tests did you have done?
  15. Yes. Thank you, Claire, it is much clearer now. And, I agree, CF may be harder at least now that I'm gluten-free. When you give up something, you tend to substitute other things and when you find out your substitutes are just as bad, ouch.
  16. I feel for you. Only you can take care of you. I know it's hard to ignore others, but no matter what they say, you know how you feel, they don't. Make your own meal for the holidays and take it with you if you must. My in laws still don't understand (probably never will). So, I'm packing. Jax Peters Lowell of the Gluten Free Bible spoke to our GIG...
  17. Sorry if this was already answered but could someone tell me exactly what casein intolerance is. What is casein, what is it in, if it is same as dairy. Was diagnosed with casein allergy, but a dietician said that is just an ingredient in cow's milk only. Should I be avoiding more products?
  18. While we're at it, what about People Magazine, 20/20 with perhaps John Stossel exposing the hidden sources of wheat and difficulties of gluten sensitive individuals, Ladies Home Journal, Prevention, the Today Show, and so on. If enough things get thrown out there, some are bound to stick.
  19. Almost everyone I know with gluten sensitivity has at one time or another been misdiagnosed. If it wasn't stress, it was IBS. If not IBS, it was "female problems". Not female, then it was "in your head". Only the LUCKY few, and I do mean LUCKY, were diagnosed early on and under treatment for gluten sensitivity before other problems started cropping...
  20. Too bad all gluten-free food manufacturers/suppliers don't have completely dedicated facilities so that we could relax a little. I heard at a meeting recently that the group that tests for Kosher foods will soon be testing for gluten-free compliance at the same time. Has anyone else heard about this?
  21. The colonoscopy only looks at the lower colon. The endoscopy through the mouth and down to the upper small intestine is where the biopsy for gluten sensitivity is taken. Did you have both procedures or just one of them? Did you have biopsies taken? If you had the endoscopy with biopsies and it was negative, the doctor would probably say that you do...
  22. A really great starter book is The Gluten Free Bible by Jax Peters Lowell. She has celiac disease and her experiences and advice are worthwhile reading. In fact, this book is a gift I give to all my newly diagnosed friends and family (along with a basket of my favorite gluten-free products). Just met her at a GIG Meeting and believe me, she has a great...

Went back to this 10-15 post because it sums it up. Enterolab is worth it because at least it is an answer. Many doctors just don't know enough about the widespread gluten sensitivity issue. Rachel mentions she has a complaint against her HMO, maybe that is what it's going to take to get insurance/doctors/etc. to change their attitude about GSE. A class...
  24. When I mentioned bone pain to my doctor (particularly the forearms and lower leg bones), she immediately suspected a Vit. D deficiency. It was extremely low. Within days of taking 400 mg. 2x a day, my back stopped hurting, my fingers didn't feel "arthritic", and of course, my arms and legs didn't hurt anymore either. Of course Vit. D can build up so you...
  25. I agree with George and others. Gluten sensitivity is real and serious. The focus always seems to be on Celiac Disease with doctors. If you don't have celiac disease, you are not really ill. That couldn't be further from the truth. For example, I had some GI problems, had a colonoscopy and endoscopy. The biopsies all came back positive, two months...
