  1. Bright side: this GI seems to be thorough and wants to eliminate possibilities by putting you through a gluten challenge. How long do you have to do it for? Take comfort in the fact that this is a "gauntlet" you have to pass through but you know how long it's going to take (hopefully not long!) You'll benefit and feel relief from having a thorough diagnosis...
  2. Thanks for the great ideas Lisa. Trouble I'm finding with reading up is that there's so very many sources, not all of which I'm certain should be trusted. But I'm finding/assuming that NIH-related sites and Mayo clinic tend to be reliable. Upshot of my doctor leaving for a month vacation is that I'm being bumped to a rapid-access internal medicine clinic...
  3. +1 for "gluten" read verbatim on Chinese menus. Quite possible the translation is at fault however...could be rice gluten for stickiness. I wouldn't necessarily discount the whole restaurant on that. Soy sauce, though. I had a crummy salad in Memphis with cheap powdered parmesan cheese on top...judging by my reaction, that was FULL of gluten.
  4. I find that if I drink on an empty stomach, next morning I'll have symptoms identical to getting glutened. Similar effect if I drink a lot of cider or other "complex" alchohol, as opposed to say vodka. It it were me, I would load up on a full, balanced dinner, get a full glass of water down between drinks, and make sure I can sleep late. But maybe that...
  5. I believe I tested negative for h pylori way back when I had a first ulcer. I have just tested negative again this time.
  6. @cyclinglady: makes a lot of sense to me. I often consider emergency but like you I'd sure rather not spend hours or days in their waiting room. Sure to be much more depressing. And despite the fact that I'm feeling ill and losing weight, I know that my symptoms don't stack up in triage to those who are there for this-minute emergencies. Which is fair. Colleen...
  7. Got my blood tests back. Everything is within reg limits, including lipase. ALT & Gamma GT is cool. Ttg was nice & low in June. Everything to do with inflammation/WBC is elevated since previous tests in June, but nothing out of range. Tests in June show oddly high carotene, which is puzzling. I am not turning orange. Still waiting on vitamin A. H...
  8. Very interesting. My symptoms present similarly to when I used to get glutened. Wouldn't it be funny if I had GB problems all this time! Though I don't imagine that GB issues would have flattened my gut villi, as an endoscope revealed years ago when diagnosed. I'm 32, which I understand is generally a little young for GB problems, but who knows. Lifelong...
  9. Hi friends, TL;DR: please share coping strategies for waiting for tests & diagnosis. I'm actually well past initial diagnosis, but my symptoms are flaring up again years later despite a strict gluten-free diet. Could be the drawn-out result of an unfortunate string of gluten mistakes last month, could be any number of other exciting GI problems that...
  10. Can Zofran or Dramamine take action once the nausea has hit, or is it meant to be taken as a prophylactic? Drowsiness sound just fine—if either relieved nausea and let me sleep more, I would consider myself lucky Really interesting stories about gallbladder issues. How were you diagnosed? I have an ultrasound coming up (too far away; calling every c...
  11. Thanks for all your thoughtful ideas. Definitely feels like pancreas or gallbladder could be in play. Waiting on serum tests & upcoming ultrasound that will hopefully speak to those possibilities one way or another. The internet is both a helpful and terrifying source of possible diagnoses; not to be taken seriously outside of medical help, but what else...
  12. Can Pepto help with indigestion into the small intestine? I thought it was essentially purposed for the stomach. I tend to get sick a couple hours later, ie. ostensibly when food is on its way out of my stomach. Gas is definitely present Thanks for your thoughts.
  13. I spent 2 weeks in the American south last month, and I had a terrible time too. Travel has historically been very much about eating for me, and having to manage frustration and anxiety every time we to went to eat was exhausting and depressing. +1 for fancier restaurants. It's not a practical solution for everyday, but if you can save up for a pricier...
  14. Folks, can we talk about nausea relief? Nausea is my #1 symptom and I am tired of just riding it out during those times I gluten myself. I've been experimenting with ginger tea (simmer slices of ginger for 10-15 minutes) and it seems to be somewhat helpful. In fact, I tried putting a piece of ginger in my mouth and slowly chewing it and that helped too...
  15. Fast-track those tests! Getting back information—positive diagnosis nor not—will ease your mind and let you plan "next steps." That ought to feel better in itself. Your symptoms could perhaps be exacerbated by the worry and anxiety around getting a diagnosis. Most say that biopsy is the gold standard, so if it's possible to do that, might be valuable. Ho...
  16. Still no better; often worse. I finally got to see my GP who was rather brusque & inclined to start from the beginning. Testing for pancreas activity, parasites, h pylori, etc. She put me on Omeprazole--an alternative, cheaper version to Losec. Just took my first dose today. Lunch went by smoothly and I thought I found temporary symptom relief. Had a...
  17. This is where dieting trends sorta punch us in the face. On one hand, folks are curious and beginning to be mindful about gluten (albeit through a vague notion that it will make them—non celiacs—feel better/lose weight/be smarter, etc). On the other hand, they are deeply misinformed on what it's all about. I try to make those instances "teachable moments" an...
  18. Thanks for your generous ideas folks. Man, it's funny how dealing with and questioning symptoms and reactions can become a "back burner" issue for oneself when the pain subsides. But a few weeks later, I find myself in agony again after eating what should have been a safe meal. Certified gluten-free soup and rice flour bun! Raw tomato and red pepper! These...
  19. I used to have a hard "3 hour minimum" before I got sick. My guess was that this was how long it took for food to pass from my stomach to my small intestine, where the autoimmune reaction happens. Since I've been getting older and more sensitive, however, I've found that window to be often smaller and unpredictable; sometimes as little as 30-60 minutes...
  20. Hi friends, Looking for insight into a difficult-to-search-for topic. Apologies if threads already (likely) exist. I am a celiac dealing with heightened gastro sensitivity after a general period of accidental glutening. Not surprising there; but here's the odd part. Not only do I generally feel worn out and have a burnt-out gut (expected symptoms for...
  21. I went to Kreuz in Lockhart with great success. I realize now that Texas BBQ is a relatively safe bet because their meat generally comes dry. Like @notme! said—just heat and smoke. Amazing food, and no celiac reaction. Wholly Cow downtown was also a gem—they asked if I was celiac and had their cook staff wore gloves while making my burger. My experience in ...
  22. Thanks for your thoughts and recommendations! I'll be sure to check out those places in Austin.
  23. Hi friends, I'm a celiac halfway through a road trip through the American South: Tulsa, Memphis, Nashville, Montgomery, New Orleans, Austin. I've been having varying results avoiding getting sick, and in particular I've been avoiding barbeque. But man, would I like to have some. I'm trying to decipher the component parts of classic Southern barbeque...
