  1. I like your plan Cara, I may have to include it in my sons. Poor little guy is still very very sick. I think he is resisting and cheating, despite having the support of two other siblings and a 100% gluten-free home.
  2. Despite it being a nightmare, I did wait for my kids to get biopsies. At one point I had one severely ill child gluten-free and two more waiting having to eat it. It was worth the wait though and I think long term a biopsy may be worthwhile, especially for school. I have already had issues with schools and camps so having a firm diagnosis has been helpful...
  3. Well the update is that I spoke to the school principal who spoke to the entire school. Son's teacher was made aware and is very supportive. Each morning he takes his lunch without fuss to the teacher who keeps it safely locked in his desk. But my son tells me the kids have been much better since the lecture by the principal who made it quite clear that...
  4. I feel really sad that your family are not supporting you or your health. Accidentally ingesting gluten can make you very sick and ultimately damage your gut indefinitely. Quite frankly that alone would mean my entire family (who are a TEAM) would work together to ensure the safely and wellbeing of the person with coeliac. I have one child...
  5. Actually I just wonder if some people are just stupid. No, I don't wonder, thats a lie. I have noticed though that with my 3 kids who are coeliac, one is extremely sensitive. I had a 98% gluten-free household as the youngest and myself are not coeliac, and he has to keep eating gluten (has the gene so will develop it). Having glutened my daughter...
  6. And believe me, I could just about murder the little devils. I know 12 year old boys can be dumb, but this really takes the cake (gluten free of course). They have been teasing him and calling him a "freak" for his change in diet, but he felt it was just light hearted banter and he could cope with it. Then he became very sick very quickly and is still recovering...
  7. Frittata? Mushrooms with a side of salsa or a poached egg on top. Sautéed tomatoes, steamed spinach and bacon? Coconut yoghurt (non dairy) with some seeds/safe grains, fresh fruit? Fruit compote? Porridge made with rice/quinoa flakes?
  8. Hanshotfirst have you considered cooking or preparing some gluten free alternatives each time, to take and share and show others how good it can be? I know its expensive to do so but it may be a way to show others that gluten free eating can be okay?
  9. This looks like an old thread but I guess it can be revived. I am not coeliac myself but two of my kids are and we are only just gluten free for 10 days. Nevertheless I can see how socially isolating it can be. My kids are 17 and 12. The younger one is the sickest. Right now he can only manage 2-3 days at school per week due to his exhaustion but I nearly...
  10. He is 12 and due to being so thin, voraciously hungry at present. I thought about rice crackers and gluten-free hummus - he loves that. No way would he be off playing with little kid and miss food, he hasn't been this hungry for years. The pizza roll up might work. I cant do fish or seafood though as a younger child is anaphylactic and cant...
  11. Hi people. I'd just like some ideas for what I can take for V to a formal family dinner. Unfortunately the restaurant has stated there is no gluten-free safe option so I have to take his meal and dessert. I can make him gluten-free chocolate cake so thats fine. But its a three course dinner, and I need to transport it there. Hopefully they will be happy...
  12. Righto. Keeping a food diary is what I will start tomorrow. Thanks everyone. On the plus side Mothers Day is this weekend (here in NZ anyway) and my eldest son is cooking a roast for us. He was very intent on making sure he gets everything gluten free. I am impressed with his dedication. He has read labels and educated himself even though this won...
  13. Yes, I am avoiding dairy also. I think it has made him vomit in the past. Oh heck. Wait. I gave him gluten-free Up and Go in his lunch yesterday. Dam I am such a doofus. I was trying to get some meat on him. No more up and go.
  14. I've just had a call from out GP with biopsy results. She said it confirmed celiacs and has a March 4 level. Does this sound correct? She said she expected it given his antibodies were the highest she had ever seen. We have an appointment on Friday for follow up. At least we know for sure now.
  15. Yes, the broth helps. He wolfed some down and felt okay. He insists he didnt eat anything from his friends. He did however gobble several gherkins last night - I checked they were gluten free but I am wondering now. Dammit. He loves gherkins.
  16. I agree. As an adult its a little easier to withstand the rolling of eyes and exaggerated sighs from people who think you are over reacting and being too fussy. My youngest has anaphylaxis to fish and seafood and people are incredibly understanding and careful - but it seems celiacs has become a "fad" due to gluten intolerant people removing credibility...
  17. Hugs to you and your daughter. My son and I are in the same boat, or at least, paddling alongside your boat. At their age being scrupulous about their diet is not only incredibly hard but socially isolating. Adults consider celiac people to be a pain so imagine what their young friends think. Feeling so unwell and having no energy adds to their distress...
  18. No one in my wider family gets it, although my sister is certainly trying to understand. She gets that I will bring all food for my coeliac kids when we come for meals and is okay with that. For other social events, I will suggest the meal is at my place so I can control the gluten. But my biggest battle is my children's father (my ex husband...
  19. Today is day 5 and I know it takes much longer to recover, but he is so ill today he has skipped school and is in bed asleep when he is not writing around in pain. I will interrogate him later - there is a chance he ate something from his friends.
  20. Thanks everyone. Marios endo is next Friday. I havent had my blood test yet and my 10 year old is having his tomorrow (this is costing me - he is very emotionally sensitive and he is freaking out. New headphones are my bribe). Daughter and other children are all negative. This weekend has been a struggle. Gluten free foods are fine, I have...
  21. He fainted in the hospital stairs. But we don't have that system here. We cant sue. However he had his endo yesterday and I had several top people come and apologize to us, and we will get a formal written apology. As he lay curled up on a chair again, waiting, the charge nurse insisted he get rushed through. They noted he had lost more weight in two weeks...
  22. Well its been a very frustrating two weeks. My son was scheduled to have his endoscopy at the (only) childrens hospital in our city on the 12th. He was nil by mouth from midnight as requested for the GA and we turned up as requested at 7am. At midday after all the much younger children had been through and come back to recovery, I realised something was...
  23. Good luck OP. I hope you find the answers. For me getting positive coeliac screen back was great because we were running out of ideas for what was wrong with my son. We are now waiting on endoscopy. Like your daughter my son is 12 (13 in December) and same height but weighs 68lb. He has lost 11 pound since November. He had severe reflux as a baby, never...
  24. I know. Thats why I said "its completely different". However we also were told it was impossible to have anaphylaxis from smells. The doctors are often wrong. And yes, (again, although different), my poor kid reacts to people eating tuna sandwiches - (which I think should be outlawed in public like cigarette smoking)(, fish in markets etc. Often we don't...
  25. Absolutely. We do eat a lot of raw veggies and nuts, as well as fruit already. I grow a fair bit too so its all organic and fresh.
