ARCHIVED Wish us luck!! Trying for Gluten Ataxia Diagnosis
Mermaid's Mom posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
So as many of you might know at only 6 weeks Gluten Free we were shocked to see how many Neurological Issues were resolved for our daughter. It was shocking and amazing. We quickly began to realize that the difficulty swallowing, the Vertigo, the sensory issues were ALL Gluten related. Now in the last 2 weeks it all slipped away and she is almost entirely... -
ARCHIVED Dairy intolerance? Maybe?
Mermaid's Mom replied to Mermaid's Mom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yeah we learned that the hard way. I am inclined to think (as I did initially) that it was JUST the Cheerios but as time is passing and she is not bouncing back I am worried that we need to strip away dairy again for a while. -
ARCHIVED Dairy intolerance? Maybe?
Mermaid's Mom replied to Mermaid's Mom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Oh I have no issue with being dairy free personally but tell that to a 13 year old. We both went gluten-free at the same time and it has been mindlessly easy for me. But I am easy about food and no real food issues. I am far more adaptable. She comes to the table with her own unique set of issues that complicate just easily transitioning to dairy free... -
ARCHIVED Dairy intolerance? Maybe?
Mermaid's Mom posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
So I think my daughter is reacting to Dairy? I only really removed it 100% from her diet for a few weeks and then SLOWLY let her have some because of how difficult it was to find substitutes she liked and she was still reeling with the emotions of being restricted from so many foods. The smell amts of dairy we allowed had no adverse effect on her (so we... -
ARCHIVED Can you help settle this between my husband and I?
Mermaid's Mom replied to Washingtonmama's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Next time just take a box of rat poisoning and extract ONE granule. Toss it into his food (while he is watching) and give it a good stir. Hand the food over and see if he is willing to eat it. -
Love reading this story as it is rare (I think) to find someone else with the swallowing issues! Hate that this is your experience however! My daughter also has the swallowing issues and it got so severe (we had no idea about Celiac) that she had to do intensive therapy to learn how to swallow again. It got better but never resolved. Once she went gluten...

ARCHIVED My Daughter was Glutened. Confused by what she ate?
Mermaid's Mom replied to Mermaid's Mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
We literally have been guiding her for years now to consider being a taste tester. She can tease out EVERY ingredient. If I use salted butter instead of unsalted and then don't adjust the salt in the recipe she will tell me that a frosted cookie is too salty! LOL! She also likes fuzzy peaches ( a sour candy) a lot. The first time she drank Natural CALM... -

Oh and the update is depressing...her difficulty with swallowing is back. She says its been a few days. Her DH scalp rash is back and she woke up today with a bad headache. SO FRUSTRATING! -
ARCHIVED My Daughter was Glutened. Confused by what she ate?
Mermaid's Mom replied to Mermaid's Mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have to tell you about my daughters super power. And I do literally think it is a super human power. She has the taste buds and scent capabilities of an Iron Chef crossed with a Blood Hound. You see her nose twitch and she becomes consumed with deciphering the smell. We will be sitting in a restaurant and she will say "is something on fire?" and then... -
ARCHIVED My Daughter was Glutened. Confused by what she ate?
Mermaid's Mom replied to Mermaid's Mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks everyone! I'll be honest...I don't think it's corn. Even form the beginning we have allowed a wee bit of corn products in the form of a corn based nacho chip and some of our favorite pastas are a corn blend. So she has been exposed to corn. I also haven't stringently avoided soy or cornstarch in products and the minimal exposure has not been... -

Thanks! After I typed my last post I remembered that last night at bed time I had to vacuum a mess off her floor and she clamped her hands over her ears in "pain" this was an everyday occurrence/reaction to noise before going gluten-free but something she hasn't done in weeks! Now I feel like the 4-5 bowls of Cheerios over the past 5-6 days have had a gradual... -
ARCHIVED My Daughter was Glutened. Confused by what she ate?
Mermaid's Mom replied to Mermaid's Mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think its Cheerios! We have had them for months but she wasn't eating them because we were avoiding oats and dairy. We lifted the dairy and oats restriction and dairy was not an issue though she has not had oats since we started going gluten-free. Over the past 4-5 days she started eating the gluten-free cheerios. Because they say gluten-free it... -

No I just used maple syrup as an example! LOL! BUT...you may have hit on something! I am sick. Really sick with a bad head cold. My husband and I both went to bed Sunday with sore throats and he woke fine and I woke sick as a dog! Yesterday she woke and said she had a sore throat. But like her father she said hers went away. But maybe she just... -

I know everyone reacts differently...but in the past 6 weeks that we have been gluten-free she has been Glutened a few times (2-3) and we were able to figure out what it was. This time I can't figure it out. She was fine yesterday (day) but in the evening we noticed the fatigue settle in. The fatigue has been non-existent for weeks but we have lived with... -

ARCHIVED A happy update!
Mermaid's Mom replied to Mermaid's Mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks!! I have actually kept VERY detailed logs and videos over the past 3 years. I have videotaped her therapy sessions where she struggled to use her foot to tap the floor. Where she was unable to cross the midline. I have compiled over 400 pages of documents from everything to what she said and did to what rabbit hole I was currently chasing for... -
We are only 6 weeks into being Gluten Free and the improvements in my daughter are astounding! Truly shocking. Biggest improvements are definitely in brain fog, fatigue and pain. She is one month constipation free and laxative free! It seems to have completely resolved itself! I have no real way of knowing if she is having improvements with...

ARCHIVED Gluten Digestive Enzymes
Mermaid's Mom posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
So clearly the goal is to NOT ingest Gluten!! LOL But does any one take a Gluten Digestive Enzyme: Open Original Shared Link To even help digest the trace amounts in gluten-free foods? Or to help reduce the impact of an accidental cross contamination? Just curios if it is worth looking into? -
ARCHIVED Vitamin and nutritional issues
Mermaid's Mom replied to Jherm21's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Most people should start off with weekly B12 and drop to monthly when they feel they are at the right level for them. But I have read that celiacs may not be able to go that long in between. I would say with monthly injections you will be a LONG time before you feel any difference. Maybe try a sublingual in between if weekly feels like too much for you... -
ARCHIVED Canadian Celiacs!! Did you know...
Mermaid's Mom posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That you can write off a portion of your Gluten Free food as a medical expense? You need a diagnosis that you are unable to eat gluten and you need to keep all your receipts. Additionally you can only write off the DIFFERENCE of the gluten-free food vs reg food. So if a loaf of bread is $1 and you require a $5 gluten-free loaf you can write off the $... -
ARCHIVED Vitamin and nutritional issues
Mermaid's Mom replied to Jherm21's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I just wanted to chime in that ALL that you described were things that my daughter suffers from and her B12 only showed SLIGHTY deficient. But here is what you need to know about North American B12 "deficiency". US standards are WAY LOWER than what other countries of the world consider proper levels. I *think* we look for anything lower than 250 as...
