  1. thank you all for your replies. Im probably allergic to nickel too. Ive basically given up wearing jewelry <sniff sniff> unless its for a short period of time.

Im sure my husband is happy..he now doesnt have to spend as much for bday or xmas presents.

I ask for Le Creuset stuff in lieu of jewelry. It's much more practical (and more fun for me) than jewelry!

  2. I get that too, it kind of feels like my hair is falling out or something (it's not, although I could stand to lose some). I also get a feeling like my shoes are too tight when they're not, like my toes are falling asleep. I don't know what the heck causes it, though for me it seems to happen more when I'm eating gluten.

You're still VERY early into the diet, and you'll have random things happen for quite some time.

  3. Hi!

I'm the publisher of Living Without magazine and happened to read one of the recent posts concerning Canadian subscriptions. Just want to set the record straight, we DO accept Canadian subscriptions but only by mail. We can't accept foreign orders through the Web site yet. Hopefully that will change in the next few months. For now, Canadians can subscribe via mail by sending a check (US Funds) to: Living Without, PO Box 2126, Northbrook, IL 60065. Canadian subscriptions are $10 more per year than the US subscriptions(mailing costs to Canada are really high) or $33 for one year and $50 for two years.

Thanks to all who support the magazine. It truly is a labor of love for everyone involved.

    With healthy regards,

    Peggy (celiac for nine years)

Not a canadian, but I bet they'll all appreciate the info!

Just wanted to say how I love Living Without, keep doing what you're doing! I love the recipes! In some ways, it's almost like a gluten-free, allergen-free Cooks Illustrated!

  4. Here's the recipe I worked out for it:

    HV Ranch mock up:

3 tbsp Buttermilk powder* (found with the other dry milk)

at least 1 tsp garlic salt

    " " 1 tsp onion powder

    " " 1 tsp dried dill

    " " 1 tsp dried parsley

    " " 1/2 tsp lemon pepper

I developed it for my chicken strip recipe that I used to make with crushed saltines and HV ranch powder. I used Nini's chicken recipe and ran with it.

  5. If his food is coming out the other end whole, then he's not chewing his food and he shouldn't be eating that kind of food. Run it through the blender first with some liquid!

It's also a sign that food isn't being digested at all, if it's chewed but comes out looking like the chewed state. Any grown up celiac with a full set of teeth that's ever eaten a salad on a bad day can tell you that

  6. How wierd! I used to get those too! I get them on the sides of my fingers and on my palms. They'd itch, burst, and then peel. They never got red, though. They usually only happened in spring, so I figured I must be molting like a snake

That's been going on since I was 10 or so. Wierd. I wish they would come back so I could have them looked at... <_<

  7. For blush i use their Glee color but it may be a bit dark (I have olive skin). If qVC doesn't have the starter kit you might be able to get it at sephora.com

I use the "warmth" that came in the kit as my blush. You only use a teeny tiny bit, and it looks great! It actually makes me look like I'm not an effing vampire!

I can also get away with using "light" instead of "fairly light" if I want to look a bit less vampiry without it looking like I have makeup that's too dark on. It's extraordinarily forgiving. I usually blend the two colors.

  8. Please start a thread of GLUTEN FREE beauty supply PRODUCTS proven through a up to date current phone call or letter email from the company they do not use gluten and will guarantee the products are NOT cross contaminated (CC) with gluten.

Please start another thread known GLUTEN products to boycott and not buy.

Many of us celiac's over time end up developing secondary food issues; dairy, corn, soy, and others the list is long. So, please we need to read past the gluten on the label. So if you are writing to a company [please] ask if the products have "the big 8 allergens" and list them as well. (i.e. milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, wheat, peanuts, or soybeans). And please also ask about CORN too!

The thing about this thread is that it's about what works for everyone individually. We all have gluten problems and take that into consideration when using or even listing our products. I'm pretty sure none of us would like to see anyone else hurt. If you have ideas for what threads need to be started, go ahead and start them!

And I don't think we should flat out condemn companies simply for using gluten in their products. Wheat germ and oat oils are very effective and soothing to the skin, so it's understandable why they would use them. Especially in "all natural" products.

Personally, I know that all the products I use are gluten-free, but I don't check for cc because I don't feel it's an issue in my makeup.

I'm getting ready to order BE Bare Minerals make-up from QVC and I am a little confused. There's so many different things to choose from. What all do I need?

They have a starter kit for like, $60 and it includes everthing you need, including brushes!

  9. I started getting constant panic attacks in college. I had broken up with my then boyfriend (now husband) and I went to him when I had them at night, and they scared him too. I was on anxiety meds for exactly a month. They worked, but made me feel so numb and inhuman that I didn't want to take them. I learned how to control them, I'm not really sure how. I think my thought process was, well, either you get yourself under control or you have to be medicated.

I just realized something huge...my stomach spasms started a few months after that. Hmm, maybe mom was right and I do internalize my stress.

I would suggest something like yoga to destress you. I found that helped me immensely. There's nothing more relaxing than coming out of a class feeling like a wet noodle :)

I guess my point is that you have to find what's best for you, and unfortunately, that may mean taking meds sometimes.

Richard- I'm so sorry about your daughter. She was absolutely stunning.

  10. Much as I don't want to condone illegal actions it might be better for him to concentrate on the gluten and cigarettes included .. if he can do both at once ... and try making sure he doesn't get any bad MJ... and try and smoke it without tobacco. He certainly won't manage to give up cigarettes if he keeps rolling with them and that is far harder to kick than MJ...

I agree that some of the scare stats are total bs. Then again, if you're using mj before the age of 15, there are probably other forces at work there that are bigger than mj use.

I should have mentioned this before, I used to smoke cigarettes, and at the time, most of my friends smoked both mj and cigarettes. Most of them started smoking cigarettes after they started smoking mj because it increases the mj high. Especially menthols, which of course are like smoking fiberglass.

IMO it's easier to stop smoking EVERYTHING at once, because of habit if nothing else.

For example, lets say you're addicted to a cup of coffee and a donut every morning. It was your routine and you never strayed. Neither one is good for you, but your doctor tells you to stop eating donuts. OK, you stop eating donuts, but you still drink your coffee. But the coffee is so much better with the donut than without. You then figure that if you only eat a donut with your coffee once or twice a week, then that's better than every day, and it is. But it's a slippery slope to eating that donut daily again.

I don't want to condone illegal behavior either, but perhaps using another vehicle to use th mj might be helpful in quitting smoking all together...

  11. I totally understand! I used to love Pizza Hut! You know when I stopped loving it? When in 10th grade biology I found out their nutritional information:

    Serving Weight: 250g

    Calories 630

    Total Fat 27g

That's for a regular cheese personal pan pizza. Totally turned me off of it!

I've had Long John Silvers recently, because I thought the same thing, and then I remembered their fish tastes like paste

I'm actually missing my chebe pizza right now! I'm looking forward to being gluten-free again after this challenge, since I grew to like that stuff more!

Go make some ooey-gooey gluten-free junk food!

  12. I don't really doubt that I have a gluten problem, my aim is to confirm celiac. My dr dx'ed it on dietary response and inconclusive bloodwork, but I'm not having that dx stand on my record without another opinion. Especially if I'll have insurance problems because of it.

I know I have symptoms. My lips are breaking out...AGAIN. My joints are cracking and popping like crazy, and I have flu-ey muscle pain most of the time. I know it's also not normal to have D cramps and not get D.

I'm just wondering why my symptoms are presenting themselves differently now. If I had D every day before, how come I'm not having that happen now? The D hadn't even resolved itself totally when I was gluten-free, and then suddenly, normal on wheat!
