ARCHIVED Are Bacteria Selective?
megsylvan2 posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Can someone tell me - are bacteria selective? Is there some reason they choose to pick on certain foods and cause bowel problems, while leaving others alone? Saw a new doc today (listed on this site, no less). Here's the diagnosis I was given: She suspects bacteria in my lower intestines are the culprit and also stress and anxiety, and recommended... -
ARCHIVED Are Prevacid Capsules Gluten Free?
megsylvan2 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Does anyone know if Prevacid capsules are gluten-free? I started taking them again a couple of days ago because my reflux was killing me. First 2 days were ok, but tonight, it is just killing me. I am now so bloated and swollen and in pain! I looked up ingredients on manufacturers website, and the only thing questionable I see is starch. Here are the... -

ARCHIVED How Strict Do We Need To Be?
megsylvan2 replied to radman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I really miss a good everything bagel or sesame seed bagel too... Mmmmmm... Now let me see if I have this straight. Radman, you feel that since you noticed mild GI systems that stopped when you went gluten-free, that you don't feel you have any villi damage, and that if you find the level at which you ingest gluten up until you notice GI symptoms, that... -
ARCHIVED How Strict Do We Need To Be?
megsylvan2 replied to radman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Oh, I reread what you said and I see what you meant now - eventhough patients are taking proton pump inhibitors to neutralize the acids, the reflux is still there and the stomach contents (though now neutralized) are still invading the esophagus and may still be causing problems. Thanks for setting me straight on that. Well, I am making appt with new gastro... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Feel Good At All?
megsylvan2 replied to Carolita's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm so glad you started this thread -- I had been wondering the same thing myself. I guess I've been hovering between gluten free and gluten light for 3 months now, and only have a few days at a time when I actually feel normal again. But, I am still experimenting and learning. I seem to have done something lately that's gotten everything all inflamed... -
ARCHIVED How Strict Do We Need To Be?
megsylvan2 replied to radman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This scares the bejeezus out of me! I live in fear of intestinal cancers. (Family hx.) I also have reflux and was on Prevacid, which my gastro said to keep taking because of the risk of esophageal cancer. But the holistic dr followed your philosophy and said I'd be much better off not taking it. But I have such inflammation and pain in the sternum... -
Ditto for me too, and I was wondering about this too, but I sort of dismissed it. Kind of thought it was a normal part of aging... Dunno.

ARCHIVED How Strict Do We Need To Be?
megsylvan2 replied to radman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Very interesting.... Would be interesting to continue this, as I'm sure some people would add on to the list with symptoms they forgot. Just to comment about the mouth tingling, burning, itching symptom. I get that and was concerned that it might be a true allergy and didn't want to wind up in ER gasping for air, so I had allergy testing done a couple... -
ARCHIVED Nice Eyelashes!
megsylvan2 replied to ThomasMom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Count me in the long lashes and soft fingernails club. My son, whom I also believe is Celiac/gluten intolerant has very long lashes too. We have always received comments on them throughout our lives. I'll have to check out the links, as this one is weird. -
ARCHIVED Dismissed By Doctor
megsylvan2 replied to megsylvan2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just thought I'd report back in that I finished my elimination diet tests. Definitely problems with wheat and gluten. (A full plate of spaghetti and a slice of garlic bread just about did me in!) Took me a week to get over it. And egg - forgot there was egg in Caesar salad dressing tonight, so I feel pretty lousy right now. Maybe now I'll remember... -
ARCHIVED Thinking And Memory Problems

I'm new to the gluten-free lifestyle, so I can't really advise on the process, except what I've experienced so far. And so far, I have not experienced being really tired. Are you sure you are getting enough nutrients? Have you had your iron checked lately and other bloodwork done? Maybe others here can help you more, but it doesn't seem right that you... -
ARCHIVED How Strict Do We Need To Be?
megsylvan2 replied to radman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Symptoms as a result of ingesting gluten: Burning pain at breastbone that extends around the right & through to back (no gallbladder issues) (not same as reflux). Tenderness and inflammation under the bra line and waist line. (Tight-fitting clothing is uncomfortable.) Gnawing pain (same location) as if a small animal has sunk it's teeth into my... -
ARCHIVED How Strict Do We Need To Be?
megsylvan2 replied to radman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Karen, that was a very good article. Thanks for posting the link. I am sorry that you are having such severe problems with this. The article certainly reinforces the title of this topic in that it shows that small amounts of gluten can still be causing damage -- at least for someone with this condition, and I assume the implication is that it is the... -
ARCHIVED Reflux Discussion
megsylvan2 replied to Jnkmnky's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I was prescribed Prevacid by my doctor, and also to take it forevermore. My doctors have told me that it is important to take it daily because all of that acid backwashing up the esophagus has been proven to cause some really nasty cancers. Then I saw a holistic MD, who did not like the idea of taking Prevacid daily. I'm sorry, but for the life of... -

Hey, the notebook is a good idea! Nice to collect everything from different books into one place. It took me about a year to recover my former level - how about you? And now I play better than I did as a child. I finally broke the confidence barrier, and learned what it means to really practice. It's a good stress reliever for me. Haven't found a decent... -

Fiddle-Faddle! - I hadn't connnected it and never had enough time to read the screen names thread. Beautiful instrument. Good point about the aural memory. You have to be able to 'hear' it to play it. I have gotten some of the books that include Compact Discs and listen to them at work. I'll try to notice if those are any easier to learn. I find... -

A Better Brain with Blueberries, now that's what I need! Yes, I love the blueberry idea too. Interestingly enough, I have about 2 smoothies a day with.... you guessed it, -- blueberries. (At least most of the time, pineapples and blueberries seem to have become the staple.) But they are frozen, and I don't think I'm up to a cup per day. A cup per day... -

I'm not that much ahead of you, DingoGirl. It took me awhile to figure out what was going on, but once I figured out gluten, wheat & eggs were the problem, I was gluten free for just about 3 months. THen I got mad because my doctor said there was no problem except I should just not eat the things that bothered me, and performed another dietary self... -
ARCHIVED Villi Damage From Other Food Intolerances?
megsylvan2 posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Was wondering if other food intolerances cause the same villi damage that gluten does, or is this limited to gluten only? Does anyone know? I am also have significant pain and GI symptoms from egg, and was trying to figure out if it causes damage or just pain? Thanks. -
ARCHIVED Thinking And Memory Problems
megsylvan2 replied to megsylvan2's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thank you both for your kind replies. I am still working on being gluten free and deciding how much/how far I need to go. I have been noticing that I am able to think more clearly, the more gluten-free I get. So I guess I'll keep noticing how it goes. The supplements are a good idea. I've not added back in my medications or vitamins or supplements... -

Yipes - I don't think I'd do that. Most folks don't take too kindly to being discussed on a forum in cyberspace, especially to point out the error of their ways. Actually, I think your in-laws and all others who 'don't get it' are pretty normal in their reactions. Look at all of us who come on this forum and read and read, and still don't get it. ... -

One of my complaints over the last 5 years or so, has been issues with memory. It seems like I have none. It is adversely affecting my work. I went back to school recently and I notice this issue here too. It seems that by evening, when I am tired, I have lost most of my ability to think. I had a test at school recently, and kept having to read the...
