  1. Hi! We are searching for gluten-free breads and gluten-free corn tortillas that others have found enjoyable. Our 18 month old currently has been eating Kininnick white sandwich bread almost daily. We haven't found any edible gluten-free corn tortillas!

    Thanks for your help!

    Kim

Wow... I never found a decent bread but almost every gluten-free corn tortilla is perfectly good.

Indeed a hard tortilla shouldn't contain any wheat anyway... if it does its not a real corn tortilla.

  2. Hi everyone, I just need to vent a little bit. I've been gluten-free for a few months now. Yesterday I was at Trader Joe's and picked up a bag of their new potato cheese gnocchi, hoping they were gluten-free. Alas, they were not, not that I'm surprised, but I was upset about it. I literally started to cry in Trader Joe's! I know I looked stupid, but I just couldn't help myself. I bought my items, went home and made myself a nice gluten-free dinner. But I'm still just a little sad about all of this. Does it get any easier??

    Anyway, thanks for listening! :)

    jen

Yes and gnocci are really easy to make at home if a bit time consuming....

I usually make batches and freeze at least half...

Just follow any gnocci recipe and use a light gluten-free flour and optionally a little xanthan gum....

Its not something you can run home and make .. boiling the pots takes ages and letting em cool a while but once you make them the rest is simple and they freeze really well.... I actualy think theyre easier to cook from frozen anyway... just make sure they don't freeze in a lump... icecube trays work great !

  3. I've been wondering the same thing. So for example - do you think a strawberry daquiri would be safe? It's usually made with rum - so I guess it would be the mix that would be worrisome ...?

What about ameretto? I've not been able to find anything on whether that is safe or not. That would be easy to order with a little sour mix - basically OJ and sprite....

I would worry about the caramel color in Amaretto but I can probably find out on the Italian site... they are very good for lists :D

Strawberry Daquiri .... is certainly possible....but you need to check the ingredients.

Basically it SHOULD BE rum, lemon juice, strawberries and sugar

what you need to watch is the bartender doing something fancy or using the fruit syrops etc...or adding triple sec (common) or similar.

Not long ago I ordered a rum and coke, the waitress asked of I wanted lemon or lime so I said OK, lime...

That night was spent in my 2nd bedroom.... the one with the seat with the hole!

I went back next day and asked what she put in.... rum, coke, lime syrop and lime...

    Open Original Shared Link

This is the prob with sour mix... it depends on the syrops used. Instead I try and go for cuba libre type stuff of capirihna (with normal rum not cahcaca) where the sugar is in the glass .... but you can do the same with a sour-mix.....

Remember this can vary by manufacturer... however this is the only one I call REAL amaretto.

  4. My suggestions are that the jury is out on any grain based liquor .... simply not worth the risk on a regular basis. Some people do and manage?

Some ciders but boy I get sick....

Coke/Pepsi are meant to be OK from a celiac disease POV... obviously they are not healthy.... but then neither is a night on the town :D

What I do is stick to white rums/tequila in liquor and mix with coke/sprite etc. or cuba libre (make sure they don't add commercial syrop) etc.

If you are off with hubby for a night out, (its valentines day here in France) then I would usually suggest sticking to good quality wine.

I personally can't drink champagne ... even the VERY good stuff .. last time I had 2 glasses was Bollinger RD and I spent a day on the loo but I don't think its gluten related....

I have the same problem with low-end whites....

However when Im glutened I also get lots of side effects, brainfog, and other intolerances become prevalent ... I don't get this with champagne so I can only assume its something else....

One special thing about REAL champagne is it is made "On lees" which basically means on the stalks and leaves... Some Canadian beers are made like this too.... and also some cheap wines designed to be drunk young....

  5. I thought I could drink wine, but I had a reaction. I heard that the barrels that wine is made/stored in are sealed with gluten. They don't have to list that as an ingredient although it can get into the wine. I don't know if that's true or not - I only know it had a very negative affect on me. Can I drink soda pop? Can I drink rum? I know there are gluten-free beers and I have tried a couple of them with no problems (at home), you can't buy them at a nightclub. I'm going to a dinner dance Friday night and I'd like to have a drink with my husband. Can someone help me?

    Starmiller

Sealed with gluten, never heard of but casein (milk protein) is a common woodglue and many celaics are also casein intolerant...

Not saying you're wrong but I think you could have mixed up the two?

  6. Well that hose certainly sucked and I can't beat it but came close....

About 10 yrs ago I was in Malaysia and took a break off in Penang .. while I was there I thought water skiing looked fun...

No need for wetsuits the tropical water was lovely and warm...

So first off I didn't quite get the deal, I had heard of similar ones where you get three falls and that's it... figuring the stuff was free with the hotel I thought this seemed probable here too.

First off noone told me if it doesn't work straight off let go,.... still this cleaned out my sinus's...

So after working it out I thought I was getting quite good so of course I fall.....

As Im waiting, sat in the water with the ski's holding my legs out front this JELLYFISH starts to float down between my legs....

Now Ive no idea how poisionous these jellyfish are but I always figure anything tropical tends to be bad....

I start trying to back pedal with my hands... this doesn't really help much... Jellyfish I know can't swim, they float in the currents so how this thing managed to float faster than I could trash was of keen interest to me.

Evenutally I just gave up and turned over and thrashed hard away but in doing so it grazed my leg with its stingers...

Not so bad I thought ... YET.... Its amazing what goes through your mind... hmm is that good or bad...

So I eventually get picked up by the speedboat guys and they ask what's up.... Jellyfish I say.....

"Ah, you'll be alright do you wanna go back... ?"

I figured I'd carry on... but after I was back in the hotel bar... my leg started to swell.... and swell .... and swell.....

It wasn't that painful, just a hitamine reaction but I did wonder afterwards that if it had reached its presumed intended goal of the family Jewels I might well have needed a wheelbarrow for the next few hours.

  7. I'm probably going to have a very unpopular opinion on this board, but my advice to you is get the child blood tested.

Than I guess that makes two of us.... lucky for me I'm already intensely disliked by some so what the heck...

If they are negative you can always do whatever you like with his diet. As far as my children are concerned, I want to try every avenue to obtain a celiac diagnosis if possible because this is a very serious life-long disease and I feel as though they deserve to know if they have it or not. I realize that not everyone agrees with me and that's fine. I know where you're coming from. I too hated to blood test my children. My baby had blood tests at a year old and my 4 year old has had several starting at 2 years of age. She will continue to have more since she now has hypothyroid...
Well I'd still say they need restesting as they get older if negative but by then it shouldn't be such an issue....

They recover after the blood test. It is traumatic in the moment and then they're fine. For me the advantages of knowing outweighed the disadvantage of them hating it.

Whilst being unpopular I'll be perfectly frank.... An 11 month old has no idea what needles are blood tests are...

Blood tests do not hurt, they are very slightly uncomfortable .... an instant ... and dare I say its a pinprick.

The largest needle I ever had was a tetanus in my bum... It looked like a darning needle but on a scale of pain from zero to migrane it barely registered 1-2. The problem is we are scared of needles because we are told to be scared of needles.

Compared to what is literally a pin prick of discomfort even I days gut ache or D is much worse...

You'll have to decide that your yourself and your child. I just want you to know that once you keep him gluten free you can't go back and get those tests without a long gluten challenge.

Very true so take the opportunity.... I cannot see any circumstance where a pin-prick should be any reason not to be tested...

  8. Just to put you at rest on the enterolab ... they do give negatives and people from here have had them....

    To get restested or not...?

Really that depends how good you feel on a gluten-free diet.... you gotta weigh up if you want to keep going at that's your choice...

The lab coulda messed up... it happens ... but in oirder to get a valis antobody test your going to have to eat gluten again...

If you go with the tests and restart then perhaps finances permitting you could do another to make doubly sure. If not then thats equally up to you... either way I hope you find your answers and feel better.

  9. :)

They've all been getting lots of extra cuddles. (And the 8 year old boy claims to really HATE it, yet... he's lying with his head in my lap or on my shoulder at every chance!)

Yeah, I used to say that too...... I didn't mean a word of it :D

It's just super frustrating because this has been going on for a month now. One gets sick, the other gets sick, then the other. And, as soon as they are all better.... one of them gets something diffferent. My husband and I both had strep ourselves!!

The 3rd grader went back to school today, he's been out for 11 days. Of course, he still has blood tests pending. They tested his SED rate, as well as ran an Epstein-Barr Virus check, mono titer, and a bunch of other things. I was given the ok to send him back though. I'm a nervous wreck.

(gosh...this is turning into an all-out vent, sorry about that!!!)

We all need those from time to time.....

  10. I didn't have time to do that. I went right from the pediatrician to the pharmacy. But, if Ranbaxy is gluten-free - then it's NOT what's causing her problems.

I will certainly, absolutely 100%, keep all of this in mind the next time we have to fill an rx for any thing!!!

Hey theres always a chance they just have a tummy bug :D it happens and builds their immune systems.

    Ok, now I'm just angry.
Honestly, as a son I can say this won't help them half as much as a cuddle! As a mom you know this too. :D

    Can we say... cross-contamination?????
Its going to happen sooner or later.... Only YOU and your hubby can decide what risks you take. Everyone takes risks ... and you shouldn't blame yourself.....bringing up kids is a delicate balance between letting them live and protecting them... You sound like you are doing just fine....

HUGS to you and please pass them on to your sick daughters ... and please don't blame your hubby HUG him too.

He probably feels awful, even if he's doing the big tough guy thing.... that's why moms like you are so important....

If your going to blame anyone blame bad luck....

I totally understand you wanted to get them the medicine as soon as possible... your hubby probably wanted to be away the least time from his sick baby... and an accident could have hapened at the one you go to sooner or later anyway....

Your sick babies will get over this... gluten or not and its unlikely (like billions to one) its going to cause any real damage but your a loving mom and seeing your babies in pain is stressful....

Or am I just saying the obvious...

  11. A couple of those things can be good when prepared the right way. Brussel sprouts, for example, with the right recipe and careful cooking can be quite good. If you cook the heck out of it though, it becomes inedible...I guess that's pretty much like any veggie...can't stand them mushy! I'm one of those who doesn't much like coriander, but, again, it depends on the recipe. It tastes really out of place with some foods, but works well with others.

Tonic water and olives are definitely off my list though. :)

My middle child is a supertaster and seems to really enjoy foods with some spice/flavour to them...but he finds pretty much all veggies bitter and hard to eat (even carrots!)

    Michelle

LOL, I eat sprouts but they're not something I buy for myself but then they must be firm and cooked with a little cross in the stalk.,..

    Funny you mention carrots though....

Sometimes I get a batch which tastes really bitter.... they can look perfectly OK and my girlfriend pretty much hates any cooked carrot but eats them raw.... she notices no difference to those I find bitter and those I don't....

I have always wondered if they are really bitter or its just me?

Anyway.... how about quinoa .....do WE think it should be on that list?

I find Rachels comment intriguing because at best I would say quinoa is bland and boring.... having said that I usually add lots of chilli peppers and coriander (cilantro) if having it as a salad....

That someone can find (the rinsed) quinoa strongly anything is intriguing.

    How about everyone else?

Rachel--24: In the interests of science that you now convinced me of please describe UGGH as best you can ..... bitter? tart? acid? soapy?

p.s. this will probably lead to MSG... at some point and the taste unagi.

  12. That makes perfect sense.

But, if you are at the pharmacy and they tell you that your rx is NOT gluten free..... do you drive around going from pharmacy to pharmacy until you find one that has the gluten free version??

I don't know about your local laws but here the prescription is considered generic (even when its named) and always has the Dr. number on. The pharmacist will either just subsititute another brand OR phone the Dr. and she gives an oral OK the pharmacist notes on the rx....

The best I found is to find the product sheet on the internet before going to fill out the Rx. Find the ones with gluten and be pre-prepred and even phone your MD in advance....

My MD now pre-checks ALL products before prescribing me .. half because she's a wonderful human being and half because she likes to avoid dumb pharmacists asking if they can subsitute brand Y for brand X....

My last prescription was actually worded something like "any xxxcillin based antobiotic which is gluten-free: I forget exactly what it was but its when I had a kidney infection.... The pharmacist looked at me like I had just taken in a prescription for bear-thyroid and tiger blood with a side order of morphine but filled out the prescription all the same...

  13. Sadly, I find the more I find out about CC issues (and I'm pretty well-versed as it is), the more paranoid I get.

I wouldn't be worrying too much about the wooden spoons getting glutened in the dishwasher except we started using them more often and I've been continually sick for the past 2 months. Granted, I think it's something else, but as we all know, when you're really sick, you just want it to stop.

I understand and sorry for the thread getting dragged off.

What I found is that real threat or not when your continually sick the more things I know it can't be the better.

If you wanna play a test then try putting some strong food dye like tumeric into your dishwasher and run a cycle with a clean wooden spoon. Everyones dishwashers are different and we use different products anyway....

OK tumeric isn't gluten ... but this is almost as much about eliminating risk as anything....

One thing you can do I found out by accident is I keep duck fat in a container... and it gets a bit gross so I stuck it in the dishwasher where it had gone all sticky .... I think this works with any oils.... I just didn't test....

Anyway, when it comes out it looks grosser than before, the sticky patch which was oil has been changed into something best described as looking like Elmers wood glue when dried...

  14. Quinoa is GROSS!

I thought maybe it was just gross because I hadnt washed the soapy chemical off....but NOPE....its just "naturally" gross....saponin or no saponin.

We all taste things differently, I love grapefruit... so long as its not too sweet... and I'm not against eating a lemon if its a sweetish one.. I'm sure lots of people find that gross :D

I personally find quinoa pretty bland (in grain form) (when washed)... but that doesn't mean everyone will.

An interesting article you might find interesting is here

    Open Original Shared Link

Anyway, perhaps Quinoa should be added to the list....

    # Brussels sprouts[9][10][11] (I really find it hard to believe anyone likes these) :D

    # cabbage[12] Not a great preference for me,

    # Coffee[13] 100% Arabica, I can taste the tiniest amount of Robusta and it makes me gag.

    # grapefruit juice[14] MMMM

    # green tea[15] MMMMM (but I really don't like black tea - and I'm English!)

    # kale[16]

    # spinach[17]

The pair of these I can happily avoid but do force myself

    # soy products[18]

    ??

    * chilli peppers - capsaicin burn is more intense in supertasters

Oh but so worth it (IMHO)

    * Tonic water - quinine is more bitter to supertasters (UGGHGHHGHGHHH )

    * Olives - for a given concentration, salt is more intense in supertasters (I only like fresh or preserved in brine)

    * Coriander - People either hate or love this herb.. the ones that don't like it say it tastes 'soapy'.

Like sprouts.... but the opposite... from how I taste it I don't see how anyone can not like coriander (cilantro) ... hehe but I know MANY do.

  15. :P :P :P :P :P :P

Well NikkiUk keeps her Christmas Tree and elven helpers in the cupboard. We like to let them out, but under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should Tom be let out of that closet!

I even had Nicole around begging him to "come out" but I think he has no intention .... of ever coming out.

me sits patiently waiting for a letter from his lawyers.

Rachel: If you read this take it as me following your advice!

  16. All I can say is perhaps you should open a thread before you assume judgement?? Obviously you have no clue as to what you are talking about.

I do not have a thread "in my name" which is against scientificness. Its quite the opposite...I LOVE scientificness and there is an 836 page thread to prove this.

To clarify....the "Rachelville" thread...is for those who wish to "take a break" from the scientificness and have fun.....which is why its located in the "gab/chat" forum. So.....before you take the time to "attack" things which you have no idea about...maybe you should find out if what you are saying has any basis?? <_<

Not really... the title says something like "no scientificness here...." If that's the thread title I just steer clear away because it has the potential ... neither am I attacking the thread.... its just a thread I chose not to look at because of the title of the thread just as if I saw someone started a thread about "Intellegent design" ...

I have come to realise that if I am going to be on this board at all then I have to limit what threads I read ....

A member pm'd me yesterday ASKING me to read a thread of hers. I had seen the thread and already decided I was not going to read it because of the title but when I was asked specifically for my opinion I checked out the thread.

Or perhaps you are just negative in nature and these kinds of posts just cant be helped?? :(
Rachel, I am pre-disposed to being negative over certain subjects. Hence I try and avoid them. This leads to me making incorrect assumptions sometimes. This is one of those incorrect assumptions. The point is I am willing to admit I make incorrect assumptions and live with it....

Ummm...correct me if I'm wrong but dont you occassionally post on the "Tickle me Elbow" thread???

Occaisionally, if memory serves me twice! Feel free to check... but its somewhat irrelevant because the title says its a lighthearted chat....

A large proportion of what goes on in Gab/Chat is NOT lighthearted .... I was told for instance that one girl was being told what to do over the termination of a foetus.... I didn't read that thread.... someone pm'd me about it and I replied I had no intention of even OPENING that thread.

This is a thread designed to "escape" reality as well...its a thread to laugh and have a GOOD TIME. I have no clue as to why you would assume that I have a thread against science or that I am trying to present unsubstantiated "fantasy and beliefs" in the thread???

This is three seperate things.... why would I assume is easiest, because of the title of the thread.

However it doesn't matter to me if it is a thread full of unsubstatianted beliefs and knocking science. Everyone has the right to that, I don't agree but I will fight for your right to disagree.

I will just add my mom who I love dearly would probably be posting 10x a day on a thread with that title.

Again....get the facts straight before you openly make assumptions about a person or about a particular thread. If you find friendship, laughter, support, and "light hearted" fun offensive......well then I would have to assume you're missing out on some of the simple pleasures in life.....and for that I'm truelly sorry. :(
As I noted I think I contributed twice to the tickle my elbow thread, it might be 3x ?

My pleasures are not your pleasures.

One of the biggest pleasures I get from this board is when people pm me saying thank-you.

I have to constantly delete my inbox because of this and although that's annoying I get great pleasure from people just saying a simple thanks....

    (Please don't flood me)

Anyway, do you realise that I have never done freefall parachuting, I am not qualifed to fly a helicopter or passenger jet and even my PPL has lapsed... I have never been a father (or I'm pretty certain) and never felt the joy of picking up my child.

I have never been to Lake Titicaca somethig that has facsinated me since 4-5 yrs old and where I have always wanted to go.

I spent most of my 20's living in Africa somewhere I never wanted to go and missing out on a normal social life or as close as my character allows me to get.

Honestly, I could go on and on.

The point is we make assumptions of people all the time ....

We make first impressions, we look at peoples actions and largely we look at how they define themselves. (especially I focus on the latter)

We also all make incorrect assumptions based on the above....

I made an incorrect assumption based on the title of the thread, I'm just pointing out why someone who had chosen not to read this thread would have made that assumption :D

Anyways....I think you have went WAY off topic because THIS thread is about Enterolab....and whether or not it is a useful lab for diagnostic purposes.

    Very true......
