  1. Yes, I bought a copy of the revised edition of her book on the gluten-free diet at the national meeting in May. You could purchase it through the national office of the CCA if you want a copy of it celiac.ca and there may be other places where you can buy it too. The book has recipes as well as nutritional info about different gluten-free grains, lists...
  2. I live in Ontario and have gone to a couple of local CCA chapter meetings plus I went to the national CCA meeting in May. I have a copy of Shelley Case's book here at home ... is there something I can help you with? Suzie
  3. I went through a stage back in the spring where I felt very sad for my 2 oldest children- I would think about them being different at birthday parties, about not being able to have pizza and beer with their buddies when they're in college..... I don't feel so sad about it now- they're just starting on the diet this month and I feel glad that we know they...
  4. I found out I was celiac back in the spring when my 3rd child was 5 mos old. I've kept her gluten-free because we've found out her older brother and sister are celiac too. She was probably getting some wheat protein via breastmilk until 8 mos of age (that's when I had my biopsy). Since that time I've been gluten-free too. When we introduced solids...
  5. Jennifer, It must be difficult with nothing conclusive to go on yet. I hope they help you get the problem sorted out. It's hard knowing that something is wrong with your child but not knowing exactly what the problem is. My son had his endoscopy/biopsy yesterday...... BIG SIGH of relief!!!!!!!!!! It all went well. We'll get the pathology report...
  6. I think whether you feel the biopsy is useful or not is a very personal decision. Doing your research beforehand and considering the pros and cons is quite useful. I felt it important to look to the future (my 2 oldest kids are 5 and 8 yrs now)- so I wanted to consider the teenage years as well as the "here and now". The treatment is for life, it's restrictive...
  7. I felt very sad a few months ago when I looked through my box of recipe cards..... many of the recipes that I had collected over the years, and which our whole family enjoyed, were ones that contained gluten. I felt like I'd have to start all over- that all the recipe testing and perfecting would have to begin again. I'm feeling better about it now...
  8. Hi Mother of 6, I'm new to this too- I'm newly diagnosed, I've got 1 child who has also been diagnosed, 1 that is probably celiac but we'll have to wait for the biopsy report to know for sure and a 3rd who is a baby. We're planning to switch our whole household to gluten-free. This was my husband's suggestion- but I'm thrilled he's willing to do this...
  9. Hi Jennifer, Glad to hear that it went well for your child. My daughter had her endoscopy/biopsy on Mon this week, and my son has his procedure next week. So we've got 1 down and 1 to go. The IV was the worst part for my daughter- I expected that it would be and requested some lidocaine cream to apply to her arm before we went into the hospital on...
  10. Clarenville is a beautiful area, I spent many summers in the Bonavista Bay area when I was growing up. Next year's celiac assoc meeting is in New Brunswick- I'll bet there will be some people there who have worked out a good recipe for gluten-free dumplings! Suzie
  11. A year seems like a really long wait to get in to see a specialist. I can understand your concerns. I wonder if there is any way to get in earlier?? I was considering the Enterolab route for my family back in the spring, especially for my children because their wait time to see a specialist was longer than mine. The Enterolab tests would have been quick...
  12. BTW... for anyone who does have friends in the states that they can ship things to- there are good prices from NewEgg.com as well as from amazon .com, plus the shipping charge from BigBuyCity is less if shipping to the states instead of Canada (they had 2 Zoji's remaining on their ebay store this week). Suzie
  13. Thanks for the suggestion.... but we don't know anyone in Michigan near the Canadian border. I went ahead and ordered one from BigBuyCity for $194.85 USD including shipping and insurance. Also, when I contacted them to ask about shipping costs, they offered to ship it by USPS air to save me $$$ on customs. Suzie
  14. I've decided to go with the Zoji and have been comparing prices this week. I've created a separate post just for Canadians in the International Room on this forum with some price comparisons for companies that ship to Canada or ship within Canada. For our American neighbours- there are some good prices out there for the ZOJIRUSHI BBCC-X20 Home Bakery...
  15. Hi Stacie, I'm a fellow Newf living off the rock too. My mom and I are both newly diagnosed celiacs and were recently talking about dumplings for pea soup. My mom makes the most awesome dumplings with wheat flour - I'm really going to miss them! Anyway, she made a batch of pea soup the other day and decided to try making gluten-free dumplings...
  16. I've decided to buy a Zojirushi bread machine after spending a couple of months reading about different bread machines on the market and getting input from other celiacs. I've done some comparison shopping this week and am passing the info along to others. Americans can get some better deals because some stores do not ship to Canada (eg. amazon .com...
  17. I've just had some sort of skin reaction too. It started 2 months after I went gluten-free. I think it may be hives, but I'm not sure and the family doctor couldn't tell what it was either. I had a rash on one shoulder, and another patch on the opposite shoulder blade and then a few spots on my arms and the upper part of my legs. The spots on my arms...
  18. Thanks so much for all of your input. Lots of votes in favour of the Zojirushi. I can't buy it from Amazon because they don't sell appliances to Canadians, too bad because their price is pretty good. I can't wait until I get a bread maker and start trying it out. Still don't know which one I'll buy, but your input has been very helpful. Suzie
  19. I'm comparing bread machines. I hope to buy one sometime between now and Christmas. So far, I've been reviewing the Zojirushi Supreme bread maker BBCC-X20 and the Cuisinart CBK-200 bread maker. There's about $150 (Canadian dollars) difference in the price of the 2 bread machines. Has anyone used both and compared them? Is the Zojirushi worth the...
  20. Hi Alison, It's recommended that all 1st degree relatives be checked out- so that would include your children as well as your parents and any siblings you might have. They all have a greater chance of developing celiac disease at some point in their life than the general population. People who are at higher risk should be tested whether they have symptoms...
  21. We're in the middle of getting the children checked out. I considered getting the Enterolab testing done too, especially since it would have been so quick, but it was also very expensive. In the end, we decided to go the more traditional route through family doc and referral to GI's. It was quite simple getting my 2 older children tested- I got a requisition...
  22. Thanks for the information and the recipes! I was wondering if collard and kale were the same thing because they are discussed on the same page in my vegetarian cookbook and it wasn't clear if they were different or not. Thanks for clarifying that they are not the same. I'll have to keep looking for a retailer who sells kale- I find it difficult to believe...
  23. I'm newly diagnosed as celiac and have recently found out that I have osteoporosis as well (age 39). I'm looking for some suggestions or recipes for kale. It is apparently very high in vit K and also calcium so I'd like to incorporate it into my diet. Are collard greens and kale the same thing? I haven't found any kale at our supermarket, but my husband...
  24. Hi Sore Joints, Have you had any luck getting testing or a GI referral? I had my blood test covered by OHIP- the technician at the MDS lab told me to go to a hospital blood clinic and it was free. Apparently, Ontario is the only province where testing is an issue. It was mentioned at the recent national celiac association meeting in Mississauga...
  25. My understanding is that the tTG may sometimes be falsely negative. It has been reported that the tTG can sometimes be falsely negative in children less than 5 yrs and it can also be falsely negative in people who have selective IgA deficiency. There is a discussion of the diagnosis of celiac disease in children on the following website from the UK: ...
