ARCHIVED Will Being Glutened Affect A Medication From Assimilating?
Suzie-GFfamily replied to saaa-wheat<3's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've looked for on-line info about the research study before, but didn't find anything. There is often a blurb about the study in the newsletter published by the local celiac support group- a brief description of the study because they are looking for more subjects. You could ask your pharmacist how your thyroid drug is metabolized- I believe that celiac... -
ARCHIVED Will Being Glutened Affect A Medication From Assimilating?
Suzie-GFfamily replied to saaa-wheat<3's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There is a research group here in London, Ontario [London Health Sciences Centre/University of Western Ontario] that are asking that kind of question. They are studying how celiac disease affects drug disposition, comparing newly diagnosed celiacs (with intestinal damage) to treated celiacs (where the gut has healed). An interesting thing is that many... -
ARCHIVED I'm Not Sure What This Rash Is?
Suzie-GFfamily replied to bmzob's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I have no idea if it is related to celiac disease or not. I wondered the same thing since I had never had any reaction like that before. But not everything that happens to us is going to be due to celiac disease- so I tried to reign in my urge to blame it on celiac disease. I did do some reading and couldn't find any info about it being related to celiac... -

I had a similar thing happen this morning too. I posted a recipe and one of my ingredients (a tade-name grain) was changed to "Lame Advertisment". I had typed the word s-a-l-b-a (without the dashes). Suzie -
ARCHIVED Do I Have To Go gluten-free Too?
Suzie-GFfamily replied to FeedIndy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Glad to hear she is doing better, what a lucky little girl she is to have such a devoted mommy. You'll have to let us know what happens if you get tested too. Are you eating any gluten now? If you have only cut out wheat (but not all gluten) that would make a difference to the accuracy of the blood screen when you get tested. If you are completely... -
ARCHIVED I'm Not Sure What This Rash Is?
Suzie-GFfamily replied to bmzob's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I had virtually no celiac symptoms either, except difficulty gaining weight. I too developed an itchy rash after going gluten-free (about 3 months afterwards). The only thing that seemed to be the culprit was a new soap my husband had purchased- Zest (tangerine mango twist scent). The soap had yellow colouring additives- yellow 6 lake and yellow 1... -
ARCHIVED What Do You Eat When Nothing Sounds Good?
Suzie-GFfamily replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'd second the vote for smoothies... I found it easier to drink things when pregnant instead of trying to eat food. I also had trouble eating broccoli, and normally I love it. I often made banana smoothies when pregnant and the early stages of breastfeeding: 1 1/2 cups pineapple juice (or 1 cup pineapple and ~1/2 cup orange juice) 1 or 2... -

I agree with the other replies... I don't think you've offended anyone at all. I think everyone is just very, very concerned for you and worried about you because the information you've been given is inaccurate. You should pick-up a copy of Dr. Peter Green's book "Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic". He is the Director of the Celiac Disease Center at... -
ARCHIVED Breastfeeding?
Suzie-GFfamily replied to brizzo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
There are alot of replies to your post that suggest your wife be gluten-free or restrict her gluten intake while breastfeeding. Here's something to think about: 1) Breastfeeding is the only thing I know about that has a protective effect (other than never eating the toxic grains). The exact effect doesn't seem to be known- does it prevent someone from... -
ARCHIVED Breastfeeding?
Suzie-GFfamily replied to brizzo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Rachel, We're keeping our 3rd child gluten-free too. She's only 11 months old now, and we've never fed her any gluten-containing foods since starting solids. She has an older brother and sister who are both celiac, plus me too. I don't know what we'll do in the future- it'll depend on whether she wants to do a gluten-trial when she's older. -

During some of my pregnancies I used to eat lots of Cream of Wheat (I didn't know I was celiac) ... lol So maybe a gluten-free hot cereal might work for you? I like teff with dates and walnuts. When I'm hungry I often make Pad Thai - the Thai Kitchen brand is quick and easy- you can add egg, chicken or tofu to it for more protein and it's good with... -
ARCHIVED Breastfeeding?
Suzie-GFfamily replied to brizzo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'd agree with breastfeeding being the best too, by far. There is evidence to suggest that it can either reduce the risk that a child will get celiac disease, or perhaps reduce the severity of the disease or delay the onset. As far as I know- there is no research available to answer the question you have asked. There is some evidence from Europe that... -
Find out if they the ice cream is dispensed from the same machine that is used for their cones. If so, they'll need to wipe the spigot off thoroughly to make sure there is no cc. Suzie

ARCHIVED Do I Have To Go gluten-free Too?
Suzie-GFfamily replied to FeedIndy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think it probably depends on the mother and the baby... I've noticed that some of the moms who posted here and said the gluten affected their baby also had gluten-intolerance/celiac disease themselves- so in this case they (myself included) probably had a leaky gut before they were diagnosed and treated with a gluten-free diet. I feel that if the gut... -
ARCHIVED Teeth Grinding
Suzie-GFfamily replied to momothree's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
That's interesting! I wonder if it is related to celiac in some way? I grind my teeth- I'll have to ask my dh is it has improved since I've been gluten-free. My oldest child just had a biopsy this week- there were obvious changes in the intestine that could be seen with the endoscope, so I'm certain he has celiac disease, and he has been a teeth grinder... -

Some of the resources I have say that maltodextrin is SAFE for the gluten-free diet, even if it is made from wheat. Check out Shelley Case's book on the gluten-free diet - there is detailed info about maltodextrin in there. Apparently when it is produced it is highly purified and no gluten remains in the final product. So I don't think you've been... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Start A 6 Year Old On gluten-free Diet?
Suzie-GFfamily replied to aprilh's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My 8 yr old and my almost 6 yr old have both started their gluten-free diets this month. I'd say EDUCATION, EDUCATION, EDUCATION.... We've discussed celiac disease and the diet alot over the past several months. The children and I have had many discussions about how gluten affects our bodies. I've done this in a non-threatening way that is geared... -
ARCHIVED So Scared....bone Density Scan Showed Osteoporosis
Suzie-GFfamily replied to chgomom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I feel the same way. For some reason, a reason I can't even explain, I feel very much against any drug treatments right now. Maybe if there is a drug treatment that seems suitable for my bone disease and isn't designed specifically for post-menopausal women I might consider it. There are some warnings about using drugs which prevent calcium resorption... -
ARCHIVED First Foods
Suzie-GFfamily replied to Mamato2boys's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My understanding is that healthy, full-term babies have enough iron stores for AT LEAST 6 months. So this is why it is usually recommended to add some iron-rich foods into their diets at around that time- for example, meats. It is also beneficial to delay the introduction of cow's milk till at least a year of age and to limit the amount of cow's milk when... -
ARCHIVED Negative Biopsy?
Suzie-GFfamily replied to Ottonegirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Since she has been eating gluten for a year there should be pos results from diagnostic tests that are done now. The best test(s) would be whatever you think is going to be most convincing for your daughter. If she doesn't believe the test- it's not going to be as valuable. Does she rely on the advice given by her physicians? If so, than maybe you... -

ARCHIVED So Scared....bone Density Scan Showed Osteoporosis
Suzie-GFfamily replied to chgomom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm scared too- the bone problems worry me sooooooo much more than anything else. The diet is something I can learn and can live with. The damage in the digestive system can heal- but my bones..... that's another story. I'm still waiting to see an endocrinologist to discuss treatments. I'm 38 and have osteoporosis in my spine too (t score of -3.4)... -
ARCHIVED The Baby Has It Too.....
Suzie-GFfamily replied to Mamato2boys's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My dd used to spit up what seemed like very large amounts of milk after most feedings when she was a baby....with hindsight I've wondered if she was reacting to wheat protein in my milk back then? She is 5 now and recently diagnosed as celiac. -
Does anyone have tips for quickly making gluten-free baked goodies for their children? I've got some pre-packaged treats in the cupboard at home, and my kids have a treat box in their classroom with a chocolate bar, some gluten-free gummy candy, M&M's, etc. But how about perishable foods like cupcakes? I'm going to bake gluten-free cupcakes...

ARCHIVED The Baby Has It Too.....
Suzie-GFfamily replied to Mamato2boys's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, Orange poop is considered normal in a breastfed baby (see a description of baby's BM's on Dr. Jay Gordon's website: "In summary, stools in breastfeeding babies are predictably green, brown, yellow or orange." Open Original Shared Link Large volume of poop is also normal- I know many breastfed babies who have profusive BM's which completely...
