ARCHIVED Best Of Each Brand?
dh204 replied to Dolcenotte's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Schar is REALLY good - I haven't found it in the US yet, but all of their products are delicious - especially their pastas and cookies. Glutino pizzas, breakfast bars, and pretzels are really good too. -
I lived in Paris for several years until recently...and I can say for sure that there are NO gluten free bakeries. Though, I have seen at the chain store Naturalia fresh loaves of gluten-free bread, but I am very wary about them because they put them on the same shelves as the regular bread and I'm afraid of cross contamination issues. I don't really...

ARCHIVED Whole Foods - Warning Mislabeled Product
dh204 replied to Eric-C's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ugh, that is totally annoying, but nice that they were so cool about it (refund, etc). I was just at Whole Foods last weekend and found a pamphlet there in front of the Whole Foods Gluten Free Bakehouse section (in the frozen foods). It's a pamphlet about eating gluten-free and filled with lots of useful information - like which ingredients to avoid and... -
ARCHIVED Just To Say 'hello' To Any Celiacs In Or Around Paris!
dh204 replied to Rosey's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hello all, Another place that has gluten free products is Bio Markus. It's a chain and is unfortunately not in Paris - they are located only in the farther suburbs, so a car is a necessity. I only get to go (sometimes) if we are visiting my in-laws, who don't live too far (30 mins) from the one in the Seine et Marne. Otherwise, I've found it to be really... -
Hi everyone, Thought you all might like to know that Continental Airlines offers a gluten-free/lactose free meal on international flights. I was quite surprised because I had called to order a gluten-free meal - most airlines offer either gluten-free OR dairy-free, not both, so it was quite nice to discover that the meal was both gluten-free and lactose...

ARCHIVED Kettle Chips
dh204 replied to dh204's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hmmm. That's kind of a bummer....I wonder why the Kettle Chips in Europe are marked as gluten free, but the US ones aren't?? Oh, well. I decided it was too risky to eat the yogurt and green onion chips, so I gave them to my husband instead (who loved them). -
Just need to start out by saying that I LOVE Kettle Chips! Anyway, I live in Europe, where my local supermarket stocks Kettle Chips - but only in the Balsamic Vinegar and the Sea Salt flavors. I've noticed that the labels clearly state GLUTEN FREE. I'm back in the U.S. right now for the holidays and headed out to Whole Foods last night and fell upon...

ARCHIVED Family Dinners- A Nightmare And A Rant.
dh204 replied to Yenni's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh dear.... If it makes you feel better, my in-laws are just as bad - if not worse than yours! I understand 100% how you feel (re: the in-laws). Mine also have a hard time understanding things that they themselves have never experienced firsthand and they cannot imagine what it is like for me. Not to mention that they don't really believe me when... -
Hi - I'm American, living in France... As some previous posters have said, it can be quite difficult - most French people have never even heard of gluten. (Then again, they also think allergies of any kind are a rare medical condition You can most likely find gluten-free products in health-food stores (as someone said previously, you need to ask for...

ARCHIVED How Many Have Self Diagnosed Celiacs?
dh204 replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I myself am also self-diagnosed - I had noticed for awhile that I was constantly gassy and bloated and my stomach would always make really loud noises. I also had a major case of acne, weird eczema on my arms and legs, and I was CONSTANTLY tired. I was originally diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Symptom, and would get blood tests done every so often - and... -
Oh boy, I know EXACTLY how you feel. EVERY single time I go visit the in-laws I ALWAYS get glutened. I've tried explaining over and over again but they just don't get it. They think I am over dramatizing everything. My husband is just as bad - crumbs all over the place. When I ask him to please clean up his crumbs he says, "Yeah I'll do it" but an hour...

ARCHIVED Wedding Cakes In France?
dh204 replied to dh204's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hey everyone, Thanks again for all the info and advice. I think the problem has been resolved for now: My mother-in-law made an appointment to meet with a baker in Fontainebleau (near their house) who is supposed to be a very prestigious and famous baker, or so I hear. His name is Fr -
ARCHIVED Wedding Cakes In France?
dh204 replied to dh204's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hey everyone! Well, gfp, the Frenchies are flat out refusing to get a cake from another country - too much trouble and too much cost - plus, I think they are taking it as a personal insult. They are really upset about the idea of getting a cake outside of France and are determined to find a solution here. Anyway, so I made several phone calls again... -
ARCHIVED Wedding Cakes In France?
dh204 replied to dh204's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
You guys! Thank you so much for all your ideas, suggestions, and most importantly your support! I was just feeling so upset about it last night, because I felt like everyone else thought I was purposefully being difficult about it! Gfp, thanks for the Italy idea - I don't speak Italian, but the in-laws are very upset about me wanting to order a cake from... -

ARCHIVED Wedding Cakes In France?
dh204 replied to dh204's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hi gfp, Thanks for your suggestions. The thing is, we only picked the date at the beginning of this month, so we only have about 4 months time to get everything done, which is why we have invited only family, and why there are only about 20 guests. We have decided to do a garden party at the in-laws house, with a buffet, but the in-laws are planning... -
Hi everyone, I've got a major humdinger: I'm getting married at the end of July and I was hoping to be able to get a gluten-free wedding cake. Unfortunately, I live in France. I've done several google searches and haven't been able to find anything in France. The only places where there are special gluten free bakeries for such events are in the...

ARCHIVED Gluten-free On Long Flights?
dh204 replied to JenKuz's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Hey everyone, Not sure if this goes here or if it should be a new thread, but anyway.... I just flew to the US this week on Alitalia and I had the gluten free meal. It is actually quite good, much better than the AF/KLM meals. They actually give you a piece of Scharr gluten free bread (although they kept it in the fridge, so it was a little hard... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free On Long Flights?
dh204 replied to JenKuz's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
hi everyone! yeah, i just found out much to my surprise and dismay, that delta does not offer a gluten free meal. in fact, i was kind of shocked because i'm a freq flier and i have flown a lot of the major airlines, which all have gluten free meals. so i ended up cancelling my ticket on delta (they offered to give me back a 100% refund) and i think i... -
ARCHIVED Frequent Fliers Unite!
dh204 replied to Sophiekins's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
hi everyone, i travel internationally quite frequently, and since i'm a skyteam elite member, this means i usually fly on klm or air france. thus said, i have always had relatively decent gluten free meals with klm...the flight attendants sometimes forget and offer me bread, but then they always come back a few minutes later and apologize for having offered... -
hey everyone, i was just wondering if there were any frequent flyers here? if so, what has been your experience with gluten free menu options on flights? has anyone had a business class gluten free meal? i travel relatively frequently between the US and Europe, but i always take AF/KLM, and i've only traveled in econ class since my gluten intolerance...

hi, i'm american but i live in paris now... i mentioned it before, but in the parisian area you can try a store called "Les Nouveaux Robinson" which has a large variety of gluten free products. Otherwise there is another chain of stores called BioMarkus. However, I don't think there are very many stores and they are not in Paris, but mostly in suburbs...

Hey everyone, Exciting news (sort of)! This wknd we went to the monoprix (or inno, in my case) and I wanted to show my bf the gluten-free section. So we went over there, and they had stocked up the section! So now there are gluten free breads and cookies there too (but no more pasta). I bought a bar of the gluten free milk chocolate and a box of these...

Hey everyone, It's not so much the crystals that freak out my boyfriend; I think it's more the pictures of various people/philosophers with little quotes underneath them that really freak him out. Also the clientele scares him - I think it's the Birkenstock wearing crowd that does it. I told him not to stereotype and anyway the stereotypic organic-eating...
