  1. Heather, I don't have anything really constructive to add, except my compassion and support, because I know nothing about these particular medical problems. But your whole story boggles the mind. I can understand doctors not knowing enough about celiac, that's bad enough, but pancreatis and gallstones in common bile ducts?! There shouldn't be differing medical...
  2. I think the celebrity category is the place to put this -- it's just an observation. I'm wondering if anyone is also a Sopranos watcher. This week's episode had Adrianna having bad stomach trouble and the doctor asking her if she's "under stress" (very typical! been there) and then diagnosing her with IBS...made me wonder if she really has celiac instead...
  3. Emmy, I'm sorry your girlfriend got so awfully sick...it occurred to me that it could be good old fashioned food poisoning, though. Did you eat the same thing when you went out? Also, I've heard that more than one person can eat the same meal, or even from the same cut of meat, and only one person can get sick from the bacteria in that one area. I do believe...
  4. Kel, I know you're not feeling well anyway, but it's not a good idea to skip breakfast and just eat Corn Pops for dinner, or eat a hamburger and Ruffles potato chips, and nothing else...small wonder you're not improving! If you are still having diarrhea problems, you should be eating plain foods like rice and bananas, maybe some gluten-free chicken broth...
  5. Leigh Ann, Welcome, and I'm sorry things are hard right now. It's hard on everybody in the beginning, and just about everyone on this board can sympathize and relate to what you're going through (although maybe not the cooking for 7 part!). I just wanted to say that although I do not have as many people as you to cook for, I do have 2 children and a husband...

    ARCHIVED Leaving

Since I've posted my opinion a couple of times about my own experiences with doctors, I just wanted to say that I don't think it's doctor-bashing if a person expresses his or her frustration with doctors who have misdiagnosed, or worse, exhibited either inexcusable medical ignorance or inexcusable judgemental attitudes towards their patients. It is very upsetting...

    ARCHIVED Mouth Sores

I found all this stuff about mouth sores very interesting. I've been having them my whole life (although never 30 or 100 at once, I don't know how people live through that when even 2 of them make me miserable) and since I'm new to celiac disease and the diet I am just finding out about the link between celiac disease and canker sores. Years ago I tried...
  8. Boy, have I experienced a lot of this stuff in the four weeks I've been gluten-free. Some people I would've never expected to be sympathetic are very much so; others who I thought were good friends have been dismissive or disinterested to the point of callousness ("oh, it won't be so bad, giving up gluten" or "well, be grateful it's not something much worse...
  9. When I first went gluten-free I had the same hunger problem and I think for the same reason: too many rice cakes, yogurts, quickly digestible stuff that made my body think it was starving (and it was), also not enough nutrients. I too found that adding more protein to my diet had a big impact. Also, if you can eat nuts, I found that eating cashews and almonds...
  10. Hi Maya, and welcome. I am pretty new to this also but am getting the hang of cooking for my family without gluten. Actually, I think the breakfast-lunch meal is harder to figure out, but dinners have been pretty good (actually, my husband says we've never eaten better!) and both my daughters, who are big pasta eaters, aren't missing it too much. You can...
  11. Julie, You are not alone. I responded to one of your posts in another category, in which I mentioned that I think that many (not all) male doctors do seem to have an attitude toward female patients which can be summed up as the "you must be under stress/depressed" syndrome. It also drives me crazy because they get to that diagnosis almost immediately! Before...
  12. It's interesting to read about these stomach symptoms because they are very similar to my trouble. I've had lots of nausea and stomach ache for years, sometimes a burning kind of pain, even before I went on the gluten-free diet, and it's continued infrequently even now I'm on the gluten-free diet (one of the reasons the doctor is doing an endoscopy soon)...
  13. Thanks, Julie. I will be very relieved when this endoscopy is over. I just want to know whatever I need to know, and move on. If you haven't already seen it, there's a really interesting article on this website written by Dr. Kenneth Fine, who's a gastroenterologist and a realexpert on celiac. If you go to the home page of celiac.com and look on the right...
  14. Poeticjul25, I am sorry that not only have you been feeling crummy, but then you have to be frustrated by the ignorance of so-called expertdoctors. I've been having lots of gastro, but also many auto-immune-type, symptoms such as you mentioned, and after bloodwork (IgG) showed raised antibodies (although not very high ones) my doctor diagnosed me as having...
  15. Flagbabyds, Just saw this and thought I'd add grits to the list. They are very quick (can be made in the microwave) and you can do lots of things to them -- make them spicy and savory (salt, pepper, paprika, butter & Parmesan cheese if you can tolerate lactose) or sweet (maple syrup, cinnamon, applesauce, with milk or soymilk or rice milk) and it is...
  16. Gillian, Thank you for the encouragement. I'm going ahead with the endoscopy because the doctor wants to investigate for signs of ulcers etc. & do the small intestine biopsy at the same time. I'm actually relieved to have the decision made and will be even more so when it's done. As for the colonoscopy, I had one in January right before I was diagnosed...
  17. Thanks for your advice. And also for the info about the endoscopy, Judy (I was afraid it involved the same horrible prep as for the colonoscopy). I am wondering how an endoscopy can show IBS and other similar hard-to-diagnose things? I didn't know that IBS showed up as a physical feature. I am considering going ahead with the endoscopy partly because I...
  18. Hi Janet, I hope you get this before you go to New York, but if not, you can use it for your next trip. I live in NYC & am newly diagnosed, so I am just finding out there are several restaurants that have gluten-free menus or will prepare food that is fine for those with celiac disease, but I haven't tried any of them yet. The three I know for sure...
  19. Hi: I can't seem to find any info on whether or not it's safe to take ibuprofen, acetaminophen (even children's Tylenol) or other over-the-counter drugs. Does anybody know if they are gluten-free? The ingredients on the ibuprofen label I have includes pregelatinized starch among other inactive ingredients. I actually have a terrible headache but don't...
  20. Thank you Mariann and everyone for your replies. I am wondering how you find out if you have the gene marker (DQ2 or 8) that people mentioned? Is that something that is determined from a biopsy? Ellen
  21. Tonya, I'm sure you will get lots of replies to your questions from more experienced people than me, but just happened to see this & thought I'd let you know -- there is a whole panel of blood tests for celiac, and biopsy is not the only way to diagnose. Seems like doctors use it as the "gold standard" to confirm the diagnosis, but it's an invasive test...
  22. Re: seeing celiac everywhere...I just found out about my own gluten-free sensitivity & also how it is mostly genetic. My mother has diabetes (now insulin dependent) and has suffered from bowel problems for years, is always "running to the bathroom," "must've had something that diagreed with me," "don't feel well today," etc., also had her gall bladder...
  23. Thanks Mariann and Andrew for your advice on the biopsies and vitamins. What you say makes sense and I don't think I'll opt for having an endoscopy done right now. (Three endoscopies sound awful.) I guess I'll have to decide based on whether I feel much better at the end of this 3-month period. I am wondering, though, about something else and I wonder...

    ARCHIVED Communion

Hi Newbie, Thanks for what you said. It's comforting to know others have many of the same feelings of ups and downs. I did a little more research on the Communion issue, and I am a surprised that it may be more complicated than I thought, it seemed like it wouldn't be too difficult a problem to resolve in my own church. I found something in the book "Gluten...
  25. The comments from people on grieving for the old way of eating was exactly what I needed to read right now, thank you so much. I was recently diagnosed & have been on the diet for only two days and am still in shock that this is going to be a forever thing! Sometimes I am in denial about it, that it's not really celiac disease and eventually I'll eat...
