But what happens when that good intention steps into the realm of personal privacy? A recent office incident involving leftover gluten-free snacks opened up a much larger conversation about boundaries, sensitivity, and the ways we handle private information—especially in the workplace.

    I made the mistake of telling co-workers about my food allergies (and celiac) and regret doing so. I have become the source of many a joke and what I feel are inappropriate questions and comments. I have been offered a donut only for the person making the offer to say "Oh, wait, you can't eat donuts. What do you eat?". I recall someone saying "Hey, do you want to join us for lunch and watch us eat?". Of course everyone laughed. I was made to join a business lunch in a restaurant I would not trust and wound up bringing a little brown bag with a couple of snacks while the rest of my co-workers enjoyed appetizers, entries, and desserts. The entire time I felt like an outcast. I felt as if everyone was watching me. I have now asked not to join team lunches and outings making me even more of an outcast. Who would have thought the impact celiac has on someone in the workplace. And, no, I don't say anything or complain as I don't want to put more of a spotlight on my "disability". I suppose I could but I imagine that would only create more negative cooler conversations.

    It is getting harder to conceal such things, as most job applications now ask if you have celiac disease in their list of disabilities. If you answer "yes" they will know up front, and may just toss your application aside, if you say "no" are you lying and violating their hiring policy? If they hire you and know this up front, then there is no way to hide it.
