Is It Really Important?

I'm confused when it comes to using gluten free makeup, shampoo, and soap. Do all those with celiac disease need to use these or is it just the ones with the skin reactions to gluten? I don't have a reaction via skin and I've never had the rash but I also don't want to use gluten products if there is a chance its affecting my recovery. I'm new this and finally feel like I'm getting a good handle on my diet, cross contamination, and even toothpaste to use...now this.

Any advice?

Better question, do you get any of those things in your mouth? So things like shampoo, lipstick, etc, do need to be gluten free.

You can use a trick to see if you are getting shampoo in your mouth.  Add baking soda to your shampoo.  (not harmful to your hair and some peeps think it works great for a gentle deeper clean)  See if you taste the baking soda during rinsing under the shower.  If you taste the baking soda, you got the shampoo in your mouth.

During Aveda product training we were taught the average woman ingests 1 tube of lipstick per year as a statistic.

Are you or anyone else intentionally eating shampoo, toothpaste or lipstick?  No.  If it gets in your mouth, you are most likely ingesting a small portion of those products.

Thanks. I don't injest my shampoo/conditioner. I make a point to keep it ouf of my face in the shower b/c I don't want to loose my contacts. I don't wear lipstick, never have liked it. When I do need chapstick, I already made sure it was gluten free.

I choose gluten free shampoos and lipsticks/glosses, and don't worry about other cosmetics ....mainly because when I do get ill, that's one thing I can eliminated immediately.  It closes the gap for me when I'm trouble shooting an issue.  Especially when there are so many gluten free shampoos available.

I don't do gluten in cosmetics/lotions knowingly, but I've got extremely sensitive skin and I'm a hair twiddler.  I just don't want oily wheat or oat residue spreading all over the place, especially since I tend to munch on raw fruits and veggies and nuts at the keyboard while reading.    And we are already getting into sunblock lotion wearing season here, early.  I have to goop that sticky crap all over my face and arms, then pack a lunch, like I did today, you have got to be kidding me.   24 hours living in my skin, especially after feeding hay and then having to rinse it off and change clothes, or one incident of your eyes nearly puffing shut from the wrong makeup, and all of you "doubters" would be running, screaming for the coconut oil ;)  B)  :o  .

Well, here I am at 10:30 pm unsunburned and unglutened, so the day went okay !

You might try Heallix.  It's a silver solution with fulvic acid. I just put the solution on with a cotton ball.  It seemed to stop the nerve pain. Again,  not in your eyes or ears.   Go to heallix.com to read more about it and decide for yourself Also,  I do think nerve and celiac combined have a lot to do with your susceptibility to shingles breaking out.

Celiac disease requires both genetic potential and a triggering stress event to activate the genes. Otherwise it remains dormant and only a potential problem. So having the genetic potential is not deterministic for celiac disease. Many more people have the genes than actually develop the disease. But if you don't have the genes, the symptoms are likely being caused by something else.

Yes, i pulled raw ancetry data and saw i have 2/3 markers for DQ2.2 but have heard from friends in genetics that this raw data can be wildly innacurate

Thanks, I’m still dealing with the pain and tingling and itching and feeling like bugs or something crawling around on my face and scalp. It’s been a miserable experience. I saw my eye doc last week, the eye itself was okay, so they didn’t do anything. I did take a 7 day course of an antiviral. I’m hoping for a turnaround soon! My life is full of stress but I have been on / off the gluten free diet for the last year , after being talked into going back on gluten to have a biopsy, that looked okay. But I do have positive antibody levels that have been responsive  to a gluten free diet. I can’t help but wonder if the last year has caused all this.

I don't think any apps are up to date, which is exactly why this happened to you. Most of the data in such apps is years old, and it doesn't get updated in real time. Ultimately there is no substitution for learning to read labels. The following two lists are very helpful for anyone who is gluten sensitive and needs to avoid gluten when shopping. It's very important to learn to read labels and understand sources of hidden gluten, and to know some general information about product labelling--for example in the USA if wheat is a possible allergen it must be declared on a product's ingredient label like this: Allergens: Wheat.
