Does any diagnosed Celiac out there in the message board also have "irritable bowel syndrome" that sort of goes along with the celiac?

...?? Wondering...

A large number of us were mis-diagnosed with this. IBS is a diagnosis that basically stands for "I BE Stumped" it's given when doctors can not find a cause for problems.... Perhaps because they don't look for food intolerances, whoops maybe it should stand for "I Be Stupid"

I would have answered this differently a few months ago, but I have been having major IBS stuff again and now that I have had an endoscopy and colonoscopy while in the midst of having uncomfortable IBS and they've seen nothing, not even inflammation, I really don't know. I have eliminated many foods from my diet and don't believe any of the remaining foods are problems for me. I have been living under stress the last few months, and this has been when this IBS has been affecting me.

Because of other mood symptoms, my docs are thinking of re-diagnosing me as bipolar which I am not excited about at all. But having done research I see many correlations with IBS, fibromyalgia, and bipolar that would all explain what is going on with me. If I can find a way out of this without meds I'll be happiest. But right now I am trying to feel better and it seems no matter how strict my diet, what foods I cut out, I am still destined to have IBS. I have been on ativan for the past couple of weeks and the IBS has been fairly non-existent.

Anyway, I think there are multiple reasons these things happen to us.

I have both celiac and IBS; however, my doctor told me that my IBS was induced by having celiac disease.

Basically, I have an irritable bowel when I have gluten or dairy.

IBS = Multiple food allergies and the pain that comes with

Multiple food allergies = Leaky gut

Every coeliac, on the sick phase, have a leaky gut, have multiple food allergies...so i guess we could say have IBS to.

I agree, I think this is what my doctor was trying to tell me. Eating gluten causes the intestines to be super sensitive to food, which is an irritated bowel.

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

One doctor suggested it, but then seemed irritated when I asked follow-up questions. Oh well—

@GlorietaKaro, your respiratory reactions to gluten make me wonder if there might also be an allergic (anaphylaxis) component at work here.

Thanks to both of you for your responses!  Sadly, even after several years of very strict gluten avoidance, I remember the symptoms well enough that I am too frightened to risk a gluten challenge— heartbeat and breathing problems are scary— Scott, thank you for the specific information— I will call around in the new year to see if I can find anyone. In the meantime, I will carry on has I have been— it’s working! Thanks also for the validation— sometimes I just feel crushed by disbelief. Not enough to make me eat gluten though—
