Symptom Question

Can anyone tell me if very narrow and soft stools are commonly a symptom of celiac?

I know narrow stools can be a symptom of colon cancer but can also be a symptom of other diseases.

Thanks.

Holly, I often have very narrow, soft stools (not so much any more since being on the diet), so it could very well be a symptom of celiac disease.

I have diverticulosis and when I eat something I shouldn't (nuts, seseme seeds, any small seedy things) my stools are thin and soft.

Thanks to both of you for the feedback. I didn't want to sit around worried about colon cancer.

I'm still trying to work up the nerve to have the tests done although my blood work came back negative.

Something is definitely not right.

The most annoying symptom to me is the feeling that I just don't completely "empty" - that there's something more in my colon but won't come out. (sorry to be so graphic) The other is pain, well more like acute discomfort across my abdomin below my belly button. But after a day or two things go back to normal. Hope this helps you some.

Some kind of constriction or blockage can cause narrow stools. Also, hemmorhoids can cause stools to narrow. Basically, anything that cuts down the diameter of the passage.

Thanks Scott. They are gluten-free but cross contaminated.

Hi there @MCAyr I have a small umbilical hernia which came about during my second pregnancy.   I can just about see it, and feel it, when I stand or sit, but it is far less noticeable when I lie down.  I always know when I am putting on weight because I can get pain and burning near the site, funnily enough not on the hernia itself but either side!  I would imagine bloating could cause the same effect as weight gain. In my case I don't think it is my bowel protruding but a bit of fat  - sorry,  I realise this isn't painting a very pretty picture.  But in truth it is scarcely noticeable.  It has never really got bigger in size. I was rather hoping that it could be operated on but here in the UK they don't seem to operate on every hernia anymore.  My GP isn't remotely worried about it. In a way, I should be thankful - it is like an early warning system that I need to go on a diet! Cristiana

The hernia description would likely be unrelated to celiac disease, but you'd need to get it checked out by your doctor to be sure it's a hernia.
