Hello all!

 

I am new to the forum but was just recently diagnosed with Celiac Disease. I travel A LOT for work - By car and plane equally. I so much appreciate finding a place with ideas on how to deal with while away from home. I have really struggled with it. I have learned to always keep Ensure and Uber bars on me at all times, just in case.

 

Recently I accidentally forgot to take a small bottle of ensure out of my purse going through security. I am in my 20's so TSA looked at me confused as to why I had that lol. He asked me if I had medical issues and I told him I had celiac and eating at airports is near impossible. He said I could keep it but they would have to run it through some vapor tests. I told him it wasn't worth it for me at that very moment and to just toss it, but it was nice to know that it could be an option for the future if need be.

 

When I am on the road, I travel with a rolling cooler. I prep food ahead of time and pack it in tupperware and keep it on ice until I get to my hotel, in which I use a fridge. When I am getting ready to leave, I fill up at the hotel ice machine.

 

Anyways, sorry to ramble. I am just very excited to see a forum like this and thought I would share some tips that are useful for me.

Travel is very hard!!!  I also travel quite a bit, mostly by car.  I tried one of those plug in coolers for the car but it doesn't work so that is frustrating.  That food dehydrator is something I'm considering.  My last round of trips I was at 3 different airports and not one of them any any gluten-free options.  I ended up getting some yogurt at the newsstand but that was about all they had--well, chips too I guess.  If I'm just going for a day, bringing food is not a big deal but it's the several day trips that get difficult.  The hard part is needing to leave a cooler in the car with food.  It just doesn't work well.

Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

      The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.
