Going In For Surgery Next Week - Freaking Out At The Hospital...

preop appt at the hospital.

Yes, I have celiac sprue. Nutritionist thinks it's okay to give me Gatorade and jello. I tell her no, those are gluten triggers and will make me sick because they have gluten. Sprite? No. It has msg. Yes, msg is gluten. What the hell? I'm going to die. Or just not eat the entire time I'm in the hospital. I hate the medical industry. They don't know anything. It's not an allergy. These people are idiots.

I'm native american.  Born celiac sprue, gotten worse with age due to triggers.  Proteins that mimic gluten, all gluten, msg, soy, carmel coloring, veg. proteins, etc. set me off with rashes, fever, nausea, sever anemia and autistim.  I'm so afraid of this upcoming surgery and hospital stay.

The doctor will not tell me the antibiotics, and the hospital staff just keeps saying, yeah we are aware of your allergy.  I don't have an allergy I have an immune system disorder I say.  What do I do to ensure they don't kill me?

Jello and Gatorade are both gluten-free. MSG is not my idea of something healthy to eat, but it is also gluten-free. Glutamate is not the same thing as gluten.

You may have problems with other proteins but it is not because they "mimic gluten". The only proteins that will cause a celiac reaction are the ones in wheat, rye, and barley. Many of us develop further intolerances to things like corn or soy, but that is not the same as a celiac reaction. Caramel coloring is derived from corn. Perhaps you are intolerant to corn, but it isn't causing villi damage like gluten would. (I know - if it makes you feel sick it doesn't matter and you should avoid it.)

So were you ever actually tested for celiac? I ask because it sounds like although you may have celiac, there seems to be something else going on too.

Relax - Jello, Gatorade, Sprite are all gluten-free like Barty said.  I don't even think Sprite has MSG but MSG is not another name for gluten.

How long will you be there?  Perhaps you could pack a cooler with a few safe foods?  OR leave things at home for someone to bring to you?

ArrrghMatey, I'm with you. I react to MSG and Sprite and other things, too. I found out the hard way that I react to anticholinergic drugs. There's something about Celiacs not being able to process and metabolize anticholinergic drugs properly. Anticholinergic drugs include anesthesia, antacids, antihistamines, antibiotics, antidiabetic medicines, and many more. There's a list of symptoms: hot as a hare, dry as a bone, red as a beet, blind as a bat, mad as a hatter, and the heart runs alone. Msg is anticholinergic. Nightshades (green peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants) are anticholinergic. Many food additives like flavorings are anticholinergic.

Please Google it!

Some people, including some people with celiac disease, have a bad reaction to refined MSG. But that does not mean MSG has gluten. Personally, I have an awful reaction to shrimp, but that allergy is unrelated to my celiac disease. It does not "prove" that shrimp contain gluten. Intolerance to nightshades is not uncommon, but they too are gluten-free. Folks with celiac disease have no reason to be any more concerned about these foods than folks who don't have celiac disease. You may need to avoid them, but it has nothing to do with celiac disease.

I totally can't have anything the hospital offers. It's part of being allergic to more than just gluten.

Reed's soda is gluten free, they make many different flavors. They have a website, you can call, email, ask questions, find one that your body is okay with so the next time your in the hospital you have back up! :D Prepare for the stupid people in your life. Stand firm with what you know.

I tupperware homemade food where ever I go. Got Intolerance Enzyme complex pills and Gluten enzyme pills for just the situation where somebody gluten's me. Especially my kids. Hands and toys get in my mouth.

I'd be totally running out that hospital in my gown with the back out!

I hope your surgery went just fine.

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
