Non-Responsiveness Of Kids With Celiac To The Hepatitis B Vaccine

We are 2+ years post diagnosis, and I rarely go on this forum anymore because "we've got this". But I wanted to share that I noticed the articles about the non-responsiveness of kids with Celiac to the Hep B vaccine. I mentioned it to our doctor at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and he had never heard of it. I sent him links to the article and his response (at age 60+ and as a leading expert on metabolic bone disease) was "wow, I learn something new every day." We had my daughter tested (she is 13) and sure enough she doesn't have the proper antibodies considering she got the full vaccine series (I think you're supposed to be >10 and her number was .7). So, we are about to embark on a new series since she is healthy and growing now and presumably (hopefully) will respond to the vaccine now.

PLEASE DON'T MAKE THIS THREAD ABOUT VACCINATIONS!! This is FYI - if you don't want your child vaccinated then please keep that to yourself! I have no desire to start or participate in a vaccine debate. :)

Like stated this is not a vaccine debate.

Thank you for sharing the information, because it is an important piece of information.  Can you please post a link to the article?

Do persons with celiac diseases struggle with receiving a Hepatitis B vaccine that sticks?

It’s well known that persons with celiac disease have a higher rate of non-response to the Hepatitis B vaccine. Most of them, however, typically respond to repeat injections.

Thanks Karen,

I was hoping for a little more information.  Like, do Celiacs need to go through the series 2 times, 3 times?

apparently, on a healed celiac, is at about the same place as a non celiac.  so, if you vaxed an gluten eating celiac, you may need to do it again, AFTER healing.

Not a lot of peer reviewed medical journal reports, but some reports are from Celiacs on a gluten free diet.

From comments on the link..  Not developing effective titers from vaccine lead up to be diagnosed with Celiac and about 5 posters were diagnosed on a gluten free diet and did not get to an effective immunity.

One poster went through 3 rounds, still not effective.

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
