12 Month Old With Symptoms (Cross Post)

Hello everyone,

My daughter was diagnosed with celiac just after her 2nd birthday.  She is now almost 4 and is doing very well on the gluten free diet - a very healthy kid!  We have no other family history of this, and now my son just turned one, and he has been having diahrea for a few weeks.  (Lots of undigested food in his diapers).  It seems quite early for him to be showing symptoms if he has celiac disease... am I wrong?  We are quite suspicious, so I've put him on a gluten free diet for a few days to see if it makes a difference and it hasn't so far.   It has been 4 days.   How long should I try this to determine if it makes a difference?  If it isn't gluten, he may be having a dairy intolerance or something else?  (By the way I know that if we eventually request testing we will need him to eat gluten regularly prior to the test... just trying to determine if diet helps him at this point).

Thanks all. -Rachel

Just my thought but, he probably hasn't been eating gluten very long.  It could be dairy, too.  Or something else. What does the doctor say?  Could it be something else?

I would think you would see a bit of improvement in a baby in a couple of weeks gluten-free.  But, if its just a virus and its residual problems, it might be better in 2 weeks, too.

I have not experienced a baby having celiac disease (my kid was 12 when I was diagnosed), nor have I done a lot of research on the subject, but consider keeping him on gluten and eliminating all dairy. If you do not see results within a week or so, then talk to your doctor about when you should do a celiac blood panel.

My kid tested negative, but she will get retested every few years or sooner if symptoms present.

Go with your gut instinct as something is not right. It might just be a bug like Karen suggested! Let's hope!

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
