Hello From South Africa

Irma Newbie

I live in Johannesburg, South Africa. I am now 54 years old and I believe that I have been gluten intolerant since I was a child.

In my childhood years, gluten intolerance was never diagnosed or tested for. I remember eating at a restaurant and being in such pain that I would lie on the bathroom floor trying to get some relief. In my young adult years I developed an abscess in my colon and almost died. I ended up having a large part of my intestines removed and had a bag fitted for 3 months. I even had my appendix removed as the doctor could not figure out what was wrong with me. I was finally diagnosed about 5 years ago. I had no idea what gluten was or how it could affect me so badly. It has been quite a journey since then with some downs and many ups :))

This forum is great with such awesome info.

I really look forward to being a part of the community!

Welcome, Irma!

Alas, I do not reside in South Africa, but in the U.S.  However, I am 54 and like you, was diagnosed with celiac disease.   Things definitely get better as time goes on!  Here's to your improved health!

Thanks Cyclinglady!!

It can take longer than 6 months for antibodies to drop to the normal range,  My DGP IgA took a few years as I got stricter and stricter about being gluten free  But having symptoms again could also mean you’re getting some gluten in your diet.

Hi, I just had my 6 month check after being diagnosed Celiac 6 months ago.  All of my panel numbers were normal except: Deamidated Gliadin Abs, IgA (It is 31 with high being over 30)  I have also been having symptoms again. Am I not actually being as careful as I think I am or does it take longer than 6 months for this particular test to come back down?  I can't get ahold of my doctor this week as she is out.     Thank you!

That is very strange, because it looks to me like two very different test results, but for the same test! It's definitely time to contact your doctor for clarity on this.

Same day which is strange to me.

Scott, thank you SO MUCH for this!! She has been through so much in the last three years as we've tried to track down answers. This language will definitely help me help her to reframe.
