How Do You Pick A Doctor

other than a GI that's covered by your plan, how did you pick someone who knows, really really knows, about Celiac?

thanks very much in advance for your thoughts and stuff

1) determine if you really really need them to know about celiac - I'm assuming in this case, you're looking for additional testing, and do. a general GP may not need to know as much about it to treat your health otherwise, however.

2) call and ask if the often treat that condition

3) schedule an appointment, go in, ask questions, get a feel for the doc, then decide if you want to hire him/her on a longer basis

4) find if there is a local celiac support group and ask them for recommendations

i met with a GI on wednesday.

i didn't get the feeling that she knew so much about celiac, but at least she suggested that i also go the the celiac center at NY presberterian. she said the blood tests aren't that specific, and a biopsy is the gold standard. she also said if the biopsy is negative, the diagnosis is negative. hmmmm, i've read differently, but whatever...

so she's setting me up for an endoscopy, and the office mgr type has me sign something saying that i know that the anestesiologist they use isn't in my plan, and that the anestesioloigist may cost me up to 300 bucks.

so now, i have an appointment set with a different GI (recommended by my endocrinologist) who uses anestesiologists from my plan.

so the last appt was a waste of time.

why post this?

so that others, when chosing a dr, will ask the anesthesiologist they use, to see if they are in the plan as well.

anyway, this pushes out any diagnosis until at least christmas.

being asymptomatic, i'm not going to complain

In addition to what's already been mentioned, I recommend looking into a doctor that is affiliated with your local hospital. I have great experiences with my doctors, which work at a nearby hospital...they seem to be more apt to be up on recent research, education. They also have specialities, much of the time. Ck into the GI clinic or program at your hospital, call and ask about their experience with Celiac. I also rec using a local group for references too. This might help too,: https://www.celiac.com/st_main.html?p_catid=22 Open Original Shared Link

I'm a little off topic (sort of) but I went to the doctor listings on Celiac.com (Jen knows the great Doctor problems in my life) and all the listings were so old ...like 908 area code which has not been used except for cell phones since the early 90s in NJ (and all the phone numbers listed with the doctors in NJ were "out of service"). Someone really needs to keep that updated. I was so frustrated I contacted a celiac specialist at the Mayo Clinic to give me a decent referal.

That stinks Bridget... Maybe you could e-mail Scott, administrator about that... Mayo is another good place to get doctor ideas too...

No, I've not been diagnosed as celiac.  Despite Entero Labs being relocated to Switzerland/Greece, I'll be doing another test. After eating wheat products in Greece for 4 weeks, there wasn't any reaction.  However, avoiding it here in the states.   Thanks everyone for your responses.

Thank you @JulieRe so much for sharing this extra information. I'm so glad to hear you're feeling better and I hope it keeps moving in that direction. I feel I'm having so many lightbulb moments on this forum just interacting with others who have this condition. I also was diagnosed with gastric reflux maybe about 10 years ago. I was prescribed ranitidine for it several years back, which was working to reduce my gastric reflux symptoms but then the FDA took ranitidine off the shelves so I stopped taking it. I had a lot of ups and downs healthwise in and around that time (I suddenly gained 20 pounds, blood pressure went up, depression got worse, and I was diagnosed with OSA). At the time I attributed my change in symptoms to me taking on a new stressful job and didn't think much else about it. They did give me a replacement gastric reflux drug since ranitidine was off the shelves, but when I went on the CPAP for my OSA, the CPAP seemed to correct the gastric reflux problem so I haven't been on any gastric reflux drug treatment for years although I still do have to use a CPAP for my OSA. Anyway that's a long story but just to say… I always feel like I've had a sensitive stomach and had migraines my whole life (which I'm now attributing to having celiac and not knowing it) but I feel my health took a turn for much worse around 2019-2020 (and this decline started before I caught covid for the first time). So I am now wondering based on what you said, if that ranitidine i took could have contributed to the yeast overgrowth, and that the problem has just been worsening ever since. I have distinctly felt that I am dealing with something more than just stress and battling a more fundamental disease process here. I've basically been in and out of different doctor specialties for the past 5 years trying to figure out what's wrong with me. Finally being diagnosed with celiac one year ago, I thought I finally had THE answer but now as I'm still sick, I think it's one of a few answers and that maybe yeast overgrowth is another answer. For me as well, my vitamin deficiencies have persisted even after I went gluten-free (and my TTG antibody levels came down to measurably below the detectable limit on my last blood test). So this issue of not absorbing vitamins well is also something our cases have in common. I'm now working with a nutritionist and taking lots of vitamins and supplements to try and remedy that issue. I hope that you continue to see improvements in working with your naturopath on this. Keep us posted!

Hello everyone. I am Elena and am 38 years old. I suspect I have a gluten intolerance even if my celiac panel is ok. I have the following symptoms : facial flushing, Red dots not bumps în face, bloating abdominal distension, hair loss, depression anxiety even with meds and even bipolar. Fatigue extreme to the point of not being able to work. All of these after I eat gluten. Could I have non celiac gluten sensitivity? Thanks anyone else with these symptoms?

Hi Everyone,  I do appreciate your replies to my original post.   Here is where I am now in this journey.  I am currently seeing a Naturopath.  One thing I did not post before is that I take Esomeprazole for GERD.  My Naturopath believes that the decrease in the gastric acid has allowed the yeast to grow.    She has put me on some digestive enzymes.  She also put me on Zinc, Selenium, B 12, as she felt that I was not absorbing my vitamins. I am about 5 weeks into this treatment, and I am feeling better. I did not have any trouble taking the Fluconazole.

I'm sure it's chemically perfect. Most of them taste lousy!
