I feel terrible!

I just got diagnosed with Celiacs (with blood tests and a biopsy) a month ago. I was pretty asymptomatic - it was through a routine physical that they found out. So basically, I felt fine before the diagnosis. Based on how high my blood tests were and how severe the damage to the villi is, my doctor was shocked that I don't feel terrible. She said I'll probably feel amazing after going gluten free. Well, I've been gluten free since October 3, and instead of feeling amazing, I feel terrible. I've been getting terrible headaches twice a week since this started. I'm not sure if they're full-blown migraines, but they're pretty debilitating.

I talked to the nurse at the Celiac center I got diagnosed through, and she said headaches are not a typical symptom and that gluten withdrawal is not a thing. She said that eating gluten free versions of other foods could cause it, but I'm not eating those very much. And the few times I did, don't seem to correlate with the occurrence of the headaches.

Has anyone experienced something like this? Did it go away? I can't imagine what else would be causing this, as the only change in my life is going gluten free. It was already a big adjustment to deal with the deprivation of the gluten-free diet when I didn't feel sick initially, but to have the deprivation and feel worse? I'm losing it.

Any advice would be appreciated!

The nurse was wrong. Gluten withdrawal is a VERY real thing. Just like when you quit coffee, you get headaches. Most of us went through it. The headaches for many of us are accompanied by mood swings, ravenous hunger, and an almost light-headed, dizzy, something's-not-right feeling. Some only go through it for a week or two. Some go through it for a month or so. You should start feeling much better, and very soon.

I am seven months out from diagnosis and going completely gluten-free, and let me tell you that gluten withdrawal is very real, and headaches were one of my major symptoms.  You have to hang in there and be religious about your diet and avoiding cross contamination, and you WILL feel better.  I remember being so impatient to feel better and wondering if my symptoms would be permanent.  Thank goodness they weren't.  It took six and a half months to finally see real progress with the gastritis/esophagitis, but even that is calming down now.  Take care, it's going to get better.

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!

Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
