Does anyone know if the positive ANA(1:640) I had back in January could be connected to my celiac diagnosis two weeks ago? Does ANA change with celiac or just other AI issues?

Thanks!

Hi!  Since Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disorder it makes sense that your ANA is positive. I think that your number is actually fairly low, but it can change over time.  Please remember that a positive ANA is not a diagnosis nor an indicator of AI disorders to come--- it is simply part of your genetic make-up.

That said, please do self monitor for the AI disorders that can readily come with celiac disease---like Sjogren's Syndrome, RA, and various thyroid conditions-----and make sure your PCP is aware of your concerns too.

Hope this helps!!  (My mother has a cluster of AI disorders, I have SS and celiac disease, and my adult daughter was just diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease, and is gluten sensitive.)

Thank you that was very helpful!

I will also add the ANA can come down with long term adherence to a gluten-free diet.  I have 3 other AI disorders, along with Celiac and 11 years ago, at my Celiac diagnosis, my ANA was 1:2560 and the last time I was tested in 2013, it was 1:320.  Lower the inflammation and numbers go down!

They may want to also eliminate other possible causes for your symptoms/issues and are doing additional tests.  Here is info about blood tests for celiac disease--if positive an endoscopy where biopsies of your intestinal villi are taken to confirm is the typical follow up.

In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease--and you are above that level. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! May I ask why you've had so many past tTg-IgA tests done, and many of them seem to have been done 3 times during short time intervals?

@JettaGirl, "Coeliac" is the British spelling of "celiac". Same disease.

This may sound ridiculous but is this supposed to say Celiacs? I looked up Coeliacs because you never know, there’s a lot of diseases related to a disease that they come up with similar names for. It’s probably meant to say Celiacs but I just wanted to confirm.

I was told it was to see how much damage has been caused. But just told CT with contrast not any other name for it.
