Depression after an episode

After an episode, has anyone experienced depression? It was not pleasant and the episode came on so suddenly.  The depression lasted for only 24 hours thank goodness, but I did not feel like myself during that time. Yuck! And if anyone responds, what did you do about it?  I am not a fan of taking antidepressants.

I get this effect and like you it lasts only 24 hours. I get through it by keep telling myself that it will be better tomorrow. I try to be easy on myself and not spend a whole lot of time around people. A walk by myself or doing something 'mindless' like watching comedies on TV helps pass the miserable day.

This effect also makes me be really careful with my diet as it is almost as unpleasant as the rampant D that hits a day or so later.

Hang in there. As you get more proficient in what you need to do to stay safe hopefully your glutenings will lesson.

Thanks for the input.  helps when you know you aren't the only experiencing these wide spectrum of symptoms.  other than eating cashews, I guess I'm not completely nuts. :)

This is definitely normal, as well as anxiety. Definitely a big reason to stay 100% gluten-free.

Yes, you're not alone. I've see. Studies indicating that gluten impacts blood flow to the brain for the majority of those with celiac. There are also studies about depression being related to brain inflammation. Personally gluten causes severe depression for me and really strongly impacts my daughter's mood and behavior. I can tell she's been glutened by the way she reacts behaviorally.

Panic attacks was a BIG thing for me before going gluten free.  Even worse is I had them when I would be totally relaxed, which means I would have them at church.  Talk about distractions. :) This has not happened anymore since beginning of this year now, for which I am extremely grateful.

I am going through this right now!  The intense stomach pain hit after going to bed Tuesday night and I spent the day yesterday in bed or in the restroom.   Today I can tell that I am headed in the right direction but feel like crying and crawling into bed.   I know this has happened in the past with a gluten poisoning event so I will take it easy today and know things will likely be better (depression wise) tomorrow. The stomach issues, tiredness, joint pain, etc... can last for up to a week.  I just joined this forum and find it very reassuring that others experience the same thing!

Welcome to the forum carieteel! You will find this a great place to ask questions and to find great material about a lot of gluten free topics.  There are some members who have recently started this journey and some who are more experienced.

Desperately need a vitamin D supplement. I've reacted to most brands I've tried.

How do I contact someone at celiac.com concerning the cessation of my weekly e-newsletter? I had been receiving it regularly for years. When I tried to sign-up on the website, my email was not accepted. I tried again with a new email address and that was rejected as well. Thank you in advance!

Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?

I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.

Thanks @Scott Adams. Do you know if Kirkland Signature supplements share facility and production lines with other products containing gluten?  I'm worried that I'll react to this brand just like I did with other gluten-free labelled supplement brands.
